There’s no doubt about it… Kalamazoo Grills are the most expensive grills on the market.

Of course, there’s one primary thing you want to know.

Are they worth it?

The answer solely depends on what kind of griller you are… and the size of your budget.

And in this Kalamazoo Grill review, it’s our goal to help you determine if this brand is a “yay” or “nay” for you.

So let’s cut to the chase, shall we?

kalamazoo grill review

Company Background (Why Kalamazoo Grills are So Expensive)

kalamazoo grill island with pizza oven in mountainous area

Let’s kick off with a short history lesson. Kalamazoo has existed in one shape or form since 1906… and it’s in this history that the origins of their quality shines through.

Originally, the company was known as Kalamazoo Sheet Metal.

During this time, the shop focused on producing highly specialized steel welded products.

Their biggest claim to fame?

Producing perfectly welded dairy processing equipment.

It wasn’t until 1996 that Kalamazoo Grills came into the picture… but with the backing of a long-standing history for unmatched quality.

This unusual start to becoming a grill manufacturer is what makes Kalamazoo Grills so unique. So while we’re on that note… let’s discuss these aspects in more detail.

Unique Aspects of Kalamazoo Grills

If you’ve seen a Kalamazoo grill in a showroom… you’ll know these grills have some serious visual presence!

There’s a reason for this… but there’s also some hidden gems when you look under the hood.

That said, let’s kick off the unique feature with looks.

Polished Welds

kalamazoo hybrid fire grill hood

There’s no doubt about it… the polished, virtually seamless welds on a Kalamazoo grill are their standout feature.

And it harkens back to when Kalamazoo was dedicated to manufacturing dairy processing equipment.

Because when you’re making food-safe equipment… a perfect weld is actually essential.

Dairy processors need to be confident that their equipment is easy to clean, and won’t have imperfections that could harbor pathogens.

Kalamazoo never lost their touch with top-notch welding… and the evidence is found in every grill.

So yes, your grill is easier to clean! But the superior welding also acts as an added bulwark against rust and corrosion. There’s nowhere for moisture to sneak in.

We should also add that each Kalamazoo grill takes a full week to make. One week = one grill. No expenses are spared in the making of these grills!

So if you appreciate excellent craftsmanship… this feature alone will go a long way for you.

Better & More Even Heat Distribution

close up of outdoor argentinian grill

A common complaint with grilling is an unevenly heated grill surface.

Your burgers are scorched to a crisp on one end… and criminally underdone on the other.

It’s frustrating, for sure. But what can you do? You’re forced to work with the quirks on your grill… and adapt.

Except with a Kalamazoo grill.

Why?

Kalamazoo puts a great deal of distance between their grill grates and burners… in some cases, the grates could be nearly 12” above the burners!

Of course, most grill manufacturers like to keep these two elements close together. The more distance, the more heat is lost.

But on the contrary… the more distance, the more evenly your grill grates are being heated.

Kalamazoo compensates for this heat loss with superpowered burners. As for the result?

A far more even-keeled grilling experience than you’re used to.

Deep Firebox Design

kalamazoo shokunin firebox

A third unique feature of Kalamazoo’s grills are their deep firebox design.

If you pop the doors open on one of their freestanding grills… you’ll notice that the firebox structure extends down into the storage cabinet!

We don’t know about you… but we’ve never seen another freestanding grill set up this way.

And of course, it’s for a specific reason.

With all that extra volume below the grill… more airflow is encouraged to circulate throughout the housing.

This enhanced airflow creates a convection-like current through the grill… once again resulting in more even heating and an easier cooking experience.

All three of these unique features will be found across Kalamazoo’s grill line.

And speaking of their grill line… let’s take a closer look at what’s on offer.

Kalamazoo Grill Overviews

Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet may not have a head-spinning amount of grill models… because they don’t need to.

Every grill is so expertly engineered… that they only need to produce a couple options in each category.

Let’s kick off this Kalamazoo Grill review with the hybrid model.

Kalamazoo Hybrid Fire Grill Review

kalamazoo grill review freestanding

Possibly Kalamazoo’s most popular model… their Hybrid Fire grill is a formidable force in the grilling world.

Able to tackle gas, charcoal, and wood-fired grilling with equal expertise… this is the best grill for versatile outdoor cooks!

How are all these fuel options housed in a single unit?

The secret is in the Kalamazoo hybrid fire grilling drawer. This drawer sits above the burners… allowing the gas to ignite wood or charcoal when desired.

And if you’d rather have the quick convenience of gas… simply leave the tray empty and continue along as usual.

Other defining factors include Kalamazoo’s proprietary Dragon Burners, a barbecue burner for indirect cooking, and rotisserie system with infrared burner.

We’ll also mention that Kalamazoo’s Dragon Burners are aptly named. Dishing out 26,500 BTUs of heat per burner… these things may as well be breathing fire!

Other value-adds with the Hybrid Fire grill are luxury laser-cut grill grates, Sunbrella cover, and 304 stainless steel. (A 316 stainless upgrade is available for oceanside climates.)

Cart model or built-in models are available, with or without an added side burner.

Prices range from $21,995.00 – $41,375.00 depending on the option you choose. (Yes, you read those prices right!)

Kalamazoo Gaucho Grill Review

kalamazoo gaucho grill

For the wood-fired purists out there… Kalamazoo’s Argentinian grill is truly a marvel to behold.

This gaucho grill has all the traditional nuts and bolts… but with a couple notable quality of life upgrades.

But we’ll start off with looks.

No doubt, the first thing you’ll notice about this grill is the massive 30” wheel. This wheel turns smoothly as butter… and allows you to precisely control the height of your grilling surface.

It’s a feature that will truly make your Argentinian grill a showpiece… bringing value far beyond just the utilitarian function.

But of course, the utilitarian functions on this 304 stainless steel grill are great too.

Kalamazoo’s gaucho grill includes laser cut grill grates… and a motorized built-in rotisserie that can support an entire suckling pig! (Luau, anyone?)

They’ve even eliminated the annoyance of starting a wood fire from scratch.

These Argentinian grills include gas powered starter burners… giving you a speedy jump start on your wood-fired dishes.

As with the Hybrid Grill, both built-in and freestanding options are available… with prices ranging from $31,855.00 to $40,995.00.

Echo Gas-Fired Grill Review

luxury freestanding grill and outdoor kitchen

But perhaps you don’t geek out over wood-fired grilling.

If you prefer the classic no-nonsense style of straight gas grilling… there’s a Kalamazoo-shaped hole in your heart named the Echo.

Kalamazoo’s entry into the gas grill market doesn’t go over the top with needless bells and whistles. It does one thing… and it does that one thing well.

The Echo gas grill will come in 316 marine grade stainless steel by default… which is the gold standard in all climates.

Their ultra-powered U-shaped burners sit nearly 8” below the grill grates. Yet, you can easily hit 750°F on the grates for an impeccable sear.

And speaking of the grates… the Echo will come part and parcel with a set of crosshatch laser cut grates. This multipurpose design will leave stunning grill marks, no matter what you’re cooking.

Rotisserie chickens are on the menu, too. This Kalamazoo grill has a roof-mounted infrared burner and chain driven rotisserie system.

Plus, since the infrared burner is top-mounted, it can also double as a broiler.

Cleanup couldn’t be easier, either. The Echo’s cleanout tray is a sliding drawer that contains three heavy-duty stainless steel trays… all for catching grease and food bits.

Simply wash off the trays, insert back into the grill… and you’re good to go.

Once again, both freestanding and built-in units are offered with the Echo grill. Prices range from $18,995.00 to $27,995.00.

Shokunin Kamado Grill Review

close up of kalamazoo shokunin kamado

Wrapping up Kalamazoo’s grill line… we have the Shokunin kamado grill.

Meaning “artisan” in Japanese, this grill is indeed an exemplary example of fine artistry!

The Shokunin functions essentially the same as any other kamado grill… but as is characteristic of Kalamazoo, with some thoughtful twists.

Rather than the traditional ceramic, the Shokunin kamado is made with 304 stainless steel. Of course, the 316 upgrade is available as well.

The handle and stand components are made from high-grade ipe wood. This type of wood is one of the hardiest against rot and harsh weather conditions.

2 inches of glass fiber insulation fill the grill walls… allowing for huge insulation potential. In fact, this grill can sustain a 250°F temperature for 65 hours with 12 lbs of charcoal!

And while a multi-day smoke isn’t something you’re likely to do… you’ll know an overnight brisket smoke will be safe until morning.

The Shokunin also features a unique multi-level cooking system. You can smoke, roast, or grill using three tiers of laser cut cooking grates.

You can even customize the airflow in this unit! There are two vents on either side of the hood… allowing you to create a crossflow effect, tailored to what you are cooking. The versatility of this charcoal grill is impressive indeed!

Kalamazoo thought about cleanup, too.

The Shokunin comes with a convenient ashtray at the very bottom of the unit. Instead of using a brush to scrape ashes out of a tiny opening… you simply pull the tray out, empty it, and place it back inside.

The Shokunin is currently only available as a freestanding model… and it’ll run you $11,225.00.

Is Kalamazoo Worth it?

man grilling beef on argentinian grill

Now here’s the million dollar question. (Or more accurately, the multi-thousand dollar question.)

Are Kalamazoo grills worth the price tag?

Well, here’s our seemingly non-committal response.

It depends… and here’s why.

There’s no other way to slice it… the craftsmanship on these grills is simply unimpeachable.

Every grill is handmade in Kalamazoo, Michigan… and each unit takes a full week to manufacture.

You will not find higher quality construction or engineering in any other grill brand!

And there’s no doubt the performance of these grills are as high-end as it gets.

But of course, there’s one huge caveat:

The price.

You can purchase a custom designed outdoor kitchen for the same price (or less) than a single Kalamazoo grill.

The stellar quality of these grills command a huge price tag… but if you’re at all restricted by a budget, Kalamazoo probably isn’t for you.

If these prices don’t make you wince, and you care greatly about fine details… Kalamazoo may be a great option for you.

If you’ve got the funds, you won’t be disappointed. Kalamazoo truly is the best-of-the-best.

But if you’d be blowing your entire outdoor kitchen budget on a single Kalamazoo grill… you’ll certainly be open to hearing about a worthy alternative.

A Worthy Alternative to Consider

Coyote grills are also engineered to perform better than most in-class appliances.

Most of their BBQ grills are outfitted with high-powered proprietary Infinity burners, for example.

These burners are similar in design to Kalamazoo’s dragon burners… and are meant to provide superior heat distribution and power over traditional tube burners.

And best of all?

All of Coyote’s appliances can be purchased at a fraction of the price compared to Kalamazoo.

Outdoor Quartz Countertops: Suitable for the Outdoors? Our Verdict & 3 Suggestions – RTA Outdoor Living https://rtaoutdoorliving.com/outdoor-quartz-countertops/ Tue, 24 Sep 2024 18:31:30 +0000 https://rtaoutdoorliving.com/?p=77862 Read more]]>

With all the factors that go into designing a fully functional backyard space… Few features are so hotly contested as the countertops on an outdoor kitchen.

Should you go natural or manmade?

Is it going to stain easily?

What about scratches?

And that’s not even getting into the limitless expanse of finish options… Which could become a full-length article in and of themselves.

But for the moment, your focus is honed in on outdoor quartz countertops.

outdoor quartz countertops

In this blog, we’ll discuss everything you need to know to decide if quartz tops are right for you. (Or not!)

As a company that manufactures concrete countertops (and works closely with a granite fabricator) for our outdoor kitchens… We have some insider perspectives to weigh in on the issue.

So with all that said… Let’s get started.

Are Quartz Countertops Pure Quartz?

close up of clear and smoky quartz points

First things first… Let’s get this subject crystal clear (pun intended).

If you’re not super familiar with quartz countertops… It may be assumed that they’re mined from slabs of quartz. (Like a large-scale version of the quartz points you find at your local gem store or mineral museum.)

That’s not what a quartz countertop is, though!

A slab of pure, unadulterated quartz used for a countertop is actually known as quartzite. Confusing, we know.

When you hear someone talking about a quartz countertop… What they’re actually talking about is a manufactured product.

Crushed quartz is mixed with resins, polymers, and pigments in order to create a countertop surface.

Depending on the brand you choose to work with… You can expect to see 90% – 95% crushed quartz used in the formulation.

All in all, there’s not much other “foreign material” in there. But as you’ll see… This makes a huge impact on quartz tops for outdoor use.

For now, let’s start with the upsides.

Advantages of Outdoor Quartz Countertops

Of course, there’s a reason why outdoor quartz countertops are appealing to you. So to begin the conversation… Let’s outline some benefits of quartz surfaces.

1. They are Extremely Stain Resistant

coffee spilled on outdoor quartz countertop

Just like how you despise dealing with grass and coffee stains in your laundry… Same goes with getting your lustrous, brand-new countertop stained.

Is there really anything more frustrating?

Thankfully, quartz countertops are among the most stain resistant surfaces out there.

Quartz countertops are nonporous… Which means they don’t absorb water when they come in contact with it.

Just grab a dish towel or soapy water… Sop it up… And move on with your day, without a worry of permanently staining your countertop.

2. They’re Also Highly Chip & Scratch Resistant

graphic of mohs hardness scale

On top of that… Quartz is a hardy mineral with great accessibility.

Scoring a 7/10 on the Mohs hardness scale... Even scraping a steel nail (scored at 6.5) across a quartz top won’t leave a scratch, literally.

So to say that quartz countertops give you peace of mind in this area is an understatement!

You can slice and dice with abandon on your quartz tops… Worry-free about the thought of accidentally marring your countertops with a stray knife cut.

3. And Super Low Maintenance

plate of birthday cupcakes on quartz countertops outdoors

And to “top” it all off… Quartz outdoor countertops couldn’t be easier to maintain.

Why is this?

Due to the production process and natural properties of quartz… These countertops generally don’t need to be resealed.

That beautiful, polished finish you see is set for life!

And although these are some pretty appealing benefits of quartz… We do have some concerning disadvantages to share.

Drawbacks of Outdoor Quartz Countertops

Unfortunately, as with anything… It’s not all sunshine and rainbows.

There are some significant drawbacks when it comes to quartz countertops. So let’s not further delay… And get right into it

1. UV Protection is a Pitfall

brilliant sunlight shining through clouds

When it comes to interior kitchen design… UV generally isn’t a consideration for quartz countertop installation.

Direct sunlight gets filtered through your windows… Which doesn’t leave much potential for UV damage.

However… You’re planning to install outdoor kitchen quartz countertops.

Therefore, the question of UV resistance becomes far more important.

Your outdoor kitchen countertops will be getting hit with direct sunlight day in… And day out.

Of course, you’re well-aware of the bleaching abilities of the sun.

Which leads us to the question… “How does quartz hold up to UV rays?”

Well… Not great.

Quartz is one of the worst offenders when it comes to UV related discoloration.

Lighter shades tend to yellow in the sun… And darker shades get lighter from the constant exposure.

One way to combat this is to add a shade structure to your outdoor kitchen space. But when there’s so many other viable options that don’t carry this risk… Is it really worth the extra trouble?

2. Be Careful with Heat!

hot copper pan on stone countertop

And speaking of extra trouble… They might not scratch easily, but you can’t use your quartz tops with reckless abandon.

Why?

Heat is a weak point.

Due to the fact that quartz countertops are a mixture of crushed quartz, resins, and other polymers… These “additives” are not particularly heat resistant.

So if you take a pot right off your side burner and put it directly on the countertop… That high heat can weaken the bond that’s holding your countertop together.

Yikes.

Of course, the easy solution is to always make sure you use a trivet… But it’s also nice to have that peace of mind that you don’t need to use a trivet.

Not to mention… It does raise additional concern if you live in a hot climate with lots of brilliant sunlight. Is that alone causing your countertop to weaken, day after day?

Which leads us to our final point.

3. They Aren’t 100% Natural

bin of powdered material

This may be the weakest point of the bunch… But it’s worth mentioning for those who are highly material conscious.

As we’ve established, quartz countertops aren’t 100% natural. They’re not mined from a pure slab of mineral… Which can be a turn-off for a couple reasons.

For one… They won’t have that unique, one-of-a-kind look.

Some people may prefer the standardized finish that a quartz countertop will provide. But if you appreciate the distinctive look of natural stone… This will come to be a bit of a disappointment.

Furthermore, you just might not love the idea of having “filler” ingredients in your countertop.

All that said, let’s get to the million dollar question.

So... Should You Use Quartz for Outdoor Kitchen Countertops?

When the chips are down… Should you use quartz for your outdoor kitchen countertops?

For us, the answer is a resounding no.

Unfortunately, the vast majority of quartz (or quartzite) countertops are simply not suitable for outdoor use.

Are the benefits great? Yes! However… There are plenty of better material choices that don’t come with the same pitfalls as quartz.

We also have some personal experience with customers using quartzite tops… And they ended up breaking! Obviously, that’s an outdoor kitchen nightmare you want to avoid.

So it’s settled, then. We’re going to steer clear of quartz, but… What are your other options?

Your 3 Best Outdoor Kitchen Countertop Options

Thankfully, there are plenty of excellent countertop materials available in lieu of quartz.

And in fact… The first potential suggestion is made from quartz. (It’s not at all like the quartz we don’t recommend!)

If You’re Dead-Set on Quartz

drinks and napkin on outdoor kitchen quartz countertops

If you’re dead-set on quartz tops and nothing else will do… There actually is a quartz countertop brand worth looking into.

Caesarstone pioneered quartz countertops… And to date, they’re one of the only companies that’s been able to temper some of the inherent disadvantages with this material.

Their outdoor-rated line in particular is what we’re referring to here.

It’s UV resistant, which takes care of the discoloration issue… And they’ve also been rigorously tested to withstand the outdoor environment.

They’re built for outdoor temperatures ranging from -13°F to 122°F… Which is a comfortable range for most of the country. (Keep it out of Death Valley, though!)

That said, overall heat resistance is still a downside for Caesarstone. It’s a higher tolerance than other brands, but if you’ve got a hot pot… You’ll still want to use a trivet, just in case.

If You Like the Natural Look

close up of granite outdoor kitchen countertops

What if you’re all about the natural look?

That’s when it’s time to turn your attention to the classics. There’s an abundance of pure stone options available. Soapstone, marble, granite…

But of these, the one we find rises above the rest is granite.

Compared to other natural countertop options… Granite is among the most dense and resilient stones out there.

The hardness of granite ranges from 6-7/10 on the Mohs scale depending on who you ask… Keeping it right in line with the hardness of quartz.

As a result, granite is highly scratch resistant. And being a nonporous material… You also won’t have to fret about stains from a spilled glass of wine.

And better yet? Heat resistance is not a problem, here! Feel free to fill up the countertop with hot pots and plates without hesitation. (It feels wrong, but it’s so right!)

But if you’re going for a more modern, industrial look…

If You Like the Industrial Look

concrete outdoor kitchen countertops with charcuterie setup on top

Concrete countertops might be more your style.

Depending on the type of concrete you get… They’re just as durable as granite and quartz.

Most concrete will sit somewhere between 5-7/10 on the Mohs hardness scale.

If your concrete is a little softer… You’ll want to be more careful. A stray knife cut could scratch the surface!

Another slight ding on concrete is that it’s more porous than granite or quartz… Making it less resistant to staining as well.

Thankfully, this effect can be well-mitigated! Once every year or two, seal your concrete tops with a food safe sealer.

This will make your concrete tops more hydrophobic… And thus, more resistant to stains.

Beyond this, concrete is plenty hardy to the outdoor environment. There’s a reason it’s used for foundations, sidewalks, and all manner of other industrial structures, after all!

It handles freeze thaw cycles like a champ… And heat concerns will be a non-issue.

Plus, you get that distressed, industrial look… Which is a shoo-in for modern outdoor kitchen designs.

Speaking of the outdoor kitchen… It might be time to wrap up with a friendly suggestion.

FAQ

While you can use quartz countertops outdoors… It doesn’t necessarily mean that you should. Most retailers manufacture quartz tops that are not suitable for outdoor use. If you can’t live without quartz… Caesarstone makes outdoor rated quartz countertops for outdoor kitchens.

Caesarstone has an outdoor-rated line of quartz countertops that is suitable for outdoor use.

Quartz is “safe” to use in the sense that your health won’t be endangered by using them… But they aren’t the best choice for outdoor use, regardless. They’re generally manufactured for interior designs… And as a result, aren’t made to withstand the rigors of the outdoor environment. They discolor with constant UV exposure, and are sensitive to heat… Which is not a good combo for an outdoor countertop!

Neither quartz nor marble are ideal materials for outdoor countertops. Quartz discolors under the sun… And marble is a soft material that scratches easily.

Your pellet grill is sitting in the backyard right at this very moment, begging for your attention.

Whether you’re a seasoned pellet grill operator, or a newbie just learning the ropes… Your pellet grilled creations are only as good as the pellets you use.

It’s this exact curiosity that brings you here today… And why you’re searching for the best pellets for smoking.

Blogs, forums, and different videos will all have a differing opinion on this topic.

We, too, have our own perspective to share. But unlike some of the other sites you’ve stumbled upon… Our perspective is based on years of experience.

best pellets for smoking with 4 types

We’ve tapped into the knowledge of Ethan Fullenkamp, an avid BBQ pitmaster and pellet grill enthusiast. (He fires up his Rec-teq at least 3 times a week!)

Over the years, Ethan has tried just about every type of pellet, brand of pellet, and flavor combination you could possibly think up.

So in this article, we’re going to condense years and years of BBQ experience into a simple, easy-to-digest guide for your pellet smoking needs.

By the end, you’ll have a clear idea of what to look for in a wood pellet brand, ideal pairing suggestions, and much more.

Let’s begin.

Quicklinks:

A Brief Introduction to Flavor Profiles & Pairings

If you’ve perused the wood pellet shelf at your local Walmart or online at Amazon… You may have felt overwhelmed by the sheer amount of pellet types available.

There’s hickory, apple mesquite… And let’s not even get into the competition blends.

So what type of wood pellet should you be using?

Well, let’s talk about that.

Hickory Pellets

close up of best hickory pellets for smoking

As Ethan will tell you, “Hickory is a really midwest flavor, because there’s a lot of hickory trees out there.”

But you don’t have to be from Iowa or Illinois to enjoy some delicious BBQ smoked with hickory wood.

In fact, in our eyes, hickory makes one of the best all around pellets for smoking.

“Hickory is a nice base wood that goes well with anything, you’re not going to go wrong with hickory. Many times, it will go particularly well with nice, sweet barbecue flavors. In my opinion, hickory is the all-purpose barbecue flavor”, Ethan continues.

If you don’t like to fuss with flavor profiles, and prefer to run on autopilot… Hickory pellets are your ticket to pellet-smoked heaven.

Hickory pairs beautifully with beef, chicken, pork, fish, or even veggies. So no matter what you’re planning to smoke up… You can’t go wrong here.

Apple Wood Pellets

best pellets for smoking pork ribs

Apple wood smoked bacon is known the world over for its delectable (and addictive!) smoky flavor.

It makes sense. We all know how well apple pairs with pork in general… So of course, the wood flavor from apple wood is also a natural pairing.

As Ethan put it, “For me, apple wood goes best with pork products. It’s a much sweeter meat, and that apple wood gives it a nice, fruity flavor.”

You could really go all-in on that apple / pork combination if you want. In the past, Ethan has made “warm apple pie” ribs with apple wood pellets, pork ribs, brown sugar, cinnamon… The works.

And if you’re a fan of throwing more unique flavors into the mix… Apple wood pairs beautifully with wood from nut trees, such as pecan or walnut.

You know what else apple pellets are an amazing contender for?

Cheese.

“Apple wood is the most popular choice for smoking cheese, but it also depends on the type. If I’m doing a gouda or something like that, I find myself using apple wood”, Ethan continues.

Apple smoked cheddar is always a hit as well… And is probably one of the best pellets for smoking cheese out there!

There’s a lot to love about apple wood, but what if you want something more bold?

Mesquite Pellets

mesquite hardwood pellets in a plastic bag

Moving over to mesquite… This is where some flavor polarization kicks in.

It’s like licorice. You either love it, or hate it.

“Mesquite is a very bold flavor that you’ll see a lot in the Tennessee area, Memphis in particular is known for mesquite BBQ. It’s a strong flavor, if you love mesquite, you’re going to love it because you get kicked in the mouth with flavor. If not, the flavor will just be too much for you”, Ethan explains.

So if you’ve never tried mesquite pellets before… We suggest purchasing a small bag, just to give it a go. If you end up not being a fan, it’s no great loss!

As for pairings, “I like to use mesquite with pork and chicken. Chicken in particular is mild in flavor, and can absorb a lot more smoke flavor from the mesquite”, Ethan continues.

Whether it’s chicken, turkey, or pork… All three are fair game for a delicious pairing with mesquite.

Pecan Wood

natural hardwood pecan wood pellets in a hopper

Pecan pellets are another popular choice for smoking meat. It’s got a lovely, nutty flavor that pairs well with other types of pellets.

“Pecan is a nice nut wood, I personally like to pair it with cherry wood, or another type of fruit wood. Pecan wood is great with pork, chicken, and fish”, Ethan suggests.

Some pecan smoked salmon is sounding pretty good right about now… What do you think?

Ethan does mention that pecan wood can pair nicely with beef sometimes as well… The choice just depends on what you’re feeling at that moment.

If you’re looking to add a nutty flavor to your smoked dishes… Pecan is a versatile choice.

A Place for Every Wood Pellet To Call Home

Store and smoke up all your favorite hardwood pellets in style with a custom outdoor kitchen setup.

Alder Wood Pellets

close up of alder wood pellets

Alder wood isn’t as common as some of the other pellets we’ve discussed so far… But it has its uses!

As Ethan will tell you, “Alder has an all-around, mild flavor that can be paired with just about anything.”

Most commonly, you’ll see it paired with fish and chicken. In fact… Some will go as far as to say these are the best pellets for smoking salmon.

It’s really as simple as that! If you’re looking for a mild smoke flavor, alder is a good choice to keep in the rotation.

Cherry Wood

Like alder, cherry is another “universal” flavor, you could say.

“Cherry wood pairs well with pork, chicken, or fish. It also pairs well with nutty flavors. Cherry brings some nice, good flavors that aren’t too strong, but you can definitely notice they’re there”, Ethan shares.

The fruity flavor of cherry can work wonderfully with just about any protein you’d like to smoke.

…And that includes cheese. (If you consider it a protein, that is!)

For Ethan, cherry wood and cream cheese are a match made in pellet smoked heaven.

“Cherry smoked cream cheese with a little cherry puree on top makes a great cracker dip”, Ethan continues.

Stow that recipe idea away for your next BBQ party!

Maple Wood

close up of maple wood pellets

Unsurprisingly, “Maple wood is a pellet you’ll find most often used in the northern states”, Ethan shares.

Where the maple syrup flows… So do the maple wood pellets.

What are they good for?

As Ethan reveals, “Maple goes really well with fish, first and foremost. It also pairs nicely with pork or chicken, even beef.”

And since maple has that sugary-sweet flavor profile… Pairing it with a savory BBQ rub on your protein will grant you that addictive, sweet and savory flavor combination we all crave.

If you’re a New Englander, you’ll also know how well maple smoke blends with cheese.

Cheddar in particular is a striking match… With the sharp, tangy flavor of cheddar being tamed by the smoky, yet sweet notes of maple wood.

But if you’re after the best flavor pellets for smoking brisket or other cuts of beef… You’ll find it in our final wood pellet selection.

Post Oak Wood Pellets

close up of smoked brisket on a pellet grill

What are the best pellets for smoking beef?

In Ethan’s opinion… It’s post oak, hands down.

“Post oak is a very Texas flavor, where it’s beef, beef, and more beef. Post oak is a Texan staple, and it’s the flavor that sets it apart from other types of barbecue”, he explains.

And when you’ve had your first taste of post oak, you’ll never forget the uniqueness of its flavor.

It’s got a bold, strong flavor… Which is why Texas BBQ doesn’t need to be gussied up much to be known the world over.

“The motto of Texas BBQ is ‘salt, pepper, smoke’. Post oak provides that really nice smoke flavor, the salt and pepper are doing their thing for the crust, and all in all, it just makes great BBQ”, Ethan continues.

So whether you’re smoking a brisket, ribs, tri-tip… Post oak is the #1 choice for beef.

Now that you’ve got a solid footing on pellet flavors… Let’s go shopping.

Best Pellets for Smoking: What to Look for

Large bags of wood pellets on pallets outside

Alright, we’re back at the store shelf. All manner of colorful labels are screaming out to you with various claims… But this time, we’re not going to get overwhelmed.

There’s a few keywords to pay attention to, and you can forget the rest.

“Right off the bat, a red flag for me is if the bag just says ‘all-natural pellets’. If it just says that, it’s a marketing ploy”, Ethan says.

Why?

Well, that’s because the term “all-natural” or “natural” doesn’t really mean much of anything. According to the USDA’s definition, a product can be labeled natural if it contains, “no artificial ingredient or added color and is only minimally processed.”

Even “minimal processing” is ambiguous, and can be twisted to mean just about anything.

So all-natural isn’t the key word to look for. What can you look for?

It’s about What’s Not There...

Well, there’s actually 3 things. A high-quality wood pellet brand will advertise what they don’t include.

As Ethan put it, “I want to see no binders, no fillers, and no artificial flavors.”

Many low-quality brands will put in cheap binders or fillers like sawdust to stretch their product… But you lose out on pure, hardwood smoke flavor.

Not good.

Artificial flavors will be caught by the “all-natural” term, however… There are natural flavors that you still wouldn’t want added to your wood pellets.

Take cherry oil, for example. This is a flavor that is possible to naturally produce, and add to your wood pellets.

But that cherry oil doesn’t translate to authentic, cherry smoked flavor. Those volatile oils just get burned right off in your pellet grill… And you’re left with the subpar flavor of a subpar pellet.

And once you’ve confirmed that your wood pellets haven’t been tampered with… What’s left?

And if You See This, You’re Golden

wood pellets in plastic bags

We’ve covered the negative, what about the affirmative?

You want to feel 100% confident that your food-grade wood pellets are high quality and safe to use.

Luckily, the golden nugget is simple to identify.

“When I’m shopping for pellets, what I’m looking for is 100% hardwood”, Ethan explains.

That’s it.

100% hardwood pellets tell you that there is nothing in that package aside from pure, clean natural hardwood.

You can compare this to something like 100% grass-fed & finished beef. This term verifies that the beef you’re buying ate only grass for its entire lifespan… So you know you’re getting a pure product that wasn’t fed grains or anything else.

It’s the same concept with 100% hardwood pellets. They took the tree… And turned it into pellets.

Simple as that.

Surely, now you’re wondering… What is the best brand wood pellets for smoking?

Let’s discuss.

What are the Best Wood Pellets Money Can Buy?

With brands like Weber, Louisiana Grills, Camp Chef, and Traeger dominating the store shelves… You’re probably wondering where they stack up.

Would you be surprised to know we only mention one of them?

We’ll Start with the Bad News...

best all around pellets for smoking in coyote pellet grill

Just to be clear… We’re not in the business of bashing different wood pellet brands.

It’s just that over the years, Ethan has figured out what his favorite (and least favorite) brands are.

With that said, let’s get his take on some of the least favorites.

For Ethan, Pit Boss pellets rank at just about the bottom of the list.

While it’s true that they’re exceptionally affordable… There’s no mention of “no fillers” or “ no binders” on the bag, which causes us to question the quality.

As a result, our experience has shown us that Pit Boss doesn’t tend to bring the best in terms of flavor.

“If you still want cheap, but still better than Pit Boss, Bear Mountain and Traeger make a decent pellet. I would question the quality of some of their pellets, but many people like them”, Ethan continues.

Out of the two, Bear Mountain advertises no fillers, no flavorings, and no additives… So for us, we’d lean toward Bear Mountain over Traeger pellets.

That said… In our minds, what are the best smoker pellets money can buy?

And Wrap with the Best Quality Pellets for Smoking

When it comes to the best brand of pellets for smoking… Ethan has several recommendations for you.

Namely, Knotty Wood, Kona Wood, Jealous Devil, and Lumberjack.

These brands all are made with 100% hardwood, with no fillers, binders, additives or flavors. They’re clean, pure hardwood pellets. Plain and simple.

The only thing really of note here is that some of the brands will include the bark from the tree… And others won’t.

For example, Jealous Devil does not include the bark, and Knotty Wood does.

Does it really matter?

Well, “I like the bark. I feel like that’s where a lot of the flavor comes from, but it does burn faster”, Ethan comments.

So it’s a trade-off.

Wood pellets with bark will give you even more of a punch of flavor… But they won’t be long for the world.

Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference. Try each of the brands we’ve mentioned… And you’ll figure out where your tastes lie.

Alright, so let’s go for a quick recap.

You know what type of wood to pair with your protein… You know what high quality pellet brands to look out for…

And there’s only one thing left to explore.

You’re in the market for a shiny new smoker… But you’re not entirely sure which one to get.

Hence, why you’re on the hunt for some comparison blogs.

Namely… A smoker vs pellet grill blog.

Because ultimately, you know you want a smoker of some sort.

You’re just not exactly sure which one appeals to you the most.

Should you get a regular smoker?

Or a pellet grill?

smoker vs pellet grill

Right now, it’s a toss up… And we’re here to bring this agonizing decision to a close.

But before we dive in… Let’s qualify ourselves with some experience.

We have a partnership with a premium outdoor appliance manufacturer. And over the years, we’ve become intimately acquainted with a variety of pellet smokers and charcoal grills.

Beyond that, though… Our team is chock full of pellet grill and outdoor smoker owners. On the regular, we’re smoking up brisket, ribs… You name it. (We’re enthusiasts!)

Point is, we know what it’s like on both sides of the coin. So let’s determine which side you’re going to land on.

What is a Pellet Grill? Is a Pellet Grill a Smoker?

Pellet Grill

Starting off… It’s important to know how each appliance differs from a functional level.

And although we’ve taken a deep dive on this topic elsewhere… We’ll briefly cover the basics for you.

Put simply, a pellet grill is a grill fueled by pellets.

Alright. Perhaps that’s a bit too simple.

Wood pellets are delivered to the firebox with the help of an auger… And a system of fans brings your pellet grill to the desired temperature.

So unlike a propane or gas grill… This fan system causes it to operate much more similarly to a convection oven.

Which also means… Unlike most grills, pellet grills are well-suited to smoking meats. (Which is why you’ll often find them called pellet smokers.)

Feeling a bit more clear?

Now let’s define smokers.

What is a Smoker?

Moving right along… What is a smoker?

This is actually a more complicated question than it seems at first blush.

Why?

There are so many different types of smokers… And everyone seems to have a different version in mind.

So let’s quickly cover the basics of the most popular categories.

Offset Smoker

Oaklahoma Joes Offset smoker

There’s no doubt that offset smokers are the most true-to-form smokers out there… And any pitmaster worth their salt is going to own one!

With these smokers… The fire pot will sit off to the side. Hence, the name “offset”.

This effectively shields your proteins from getting hit with the full-force of hot smoke… Favoring a slower, more measured approach. (This also keeps your proteins from drying out.)

Cool smoke will dance around the cooking chamber and exit through the smoke stack.

We’ll get into a bit more detail later… But for now, this is a good starting point.

Charcoal Smoker or Kamado Smoker

weber charcoal smoker
kamado classic joe standalone grill series 3

For those not wanting to commit to a full-on offset smoker… Many grillers opt for a charcoal or kamado smoker instead.

Like the offset smoker, both offer a simplistic, no-frills construction method.

Charcoal smokers are typically made from steel or aluminum… Whereas, kamado smokers will typically feature a highly-insulative ceramic construction.

Since ceramic kamado smokers offer superior temperature control… Many home cooks will prefer this over a regular charcoal smoker.

That said, they function quite similarly otherwise.

Both smokers will use charcoal as the fuel source… And fill the chamber with an abundance of beautiful, flavorful smoke.

Although these smokers are some of the most popular options out there… They still might not be what you had in mind.

Electric Smoker

deluxe xl digital electric smoker

If you prefer your smoking experience to be a little more hands-off (and a little more high-tech)… You might have your sights set on an electric smoker.

While far less common than an offset smoker or kamado… Their electric counterparts have a decent following.

Of course, these smokers operate by electricity. An electric rod will slowly burn some wood chips to generate the smoke. Like a pellet grill, it will also keep a consistent temperature.

Generally speaking, electric smokers will have a vertical orientation. This allows for a more efficient use of space… And makes it easier to hang sausages or other similar products.

That said, we’ve found that if you’re interested in an electric smoker… More often than not, you’ll end up happier with a pellet grill.

So for the purposes of this article, when we reference “smoker”… We’re talking about an offset smoker, charcoal smoker, or kamado smoker.

But that still doesn’t answer your question.

Smoker vs Pellet Grill: Which is Better?

rta pellet grill island with alfa pizza oven in stacked stone chalk on patio

Even though you have a clearer understanding of what pellet grills and smokers are… You’re no closer to deciding which one you’d like to purchase.

Which one is better?

Well, it’s not a one-size-fits-all answer.

We have to do a bit more digging to discover the best choice for you.

And how can we do that?

It really comes down to the pros and cons.

First up… Pellet grills step up to the plate.

Pellet Grill Advantages

We’ll start off with some words of affirmation for pellet grills.

But make no mistake… We aren’t just blowing smoke.

Pellet grills have taken the outdoor grilling market by storm these past few years… And it has a lot to do with these advantages.

Convenience is Unmatched

When it comes to smoking meats, nothing can beat the convenience of a pellet grill.

You toss in the pellets… Set your target temperature and let it preheat… Put your meat on… And let the smoker do the rest.

You don’t have to worry about starting a fire at all.

If you can use an indoor oven… You can use a pellet smoker. It’s that simple.

So whether you’re a beginner or just short on free time… The convenience of a pellet smoker will be a key deciding factor.

Versatility & Diversified Results

jet tila using his pellet grill

Since you’re debating between buying a pellet or regular smoker… Likely, that means you only have space (or the budget) for one outdoor appliance.

So the more that your appliances can do… The better off you’ll be.

And in the case of versatility… A pellet grill can pretty much do it all.

A high quality pellet smoker will be proficient at grilling, smoking, baking, and even searing. (Traeger, Pit Boss, and Weber pellet grills tend to struggle with high heat searing.)

What else could you want?

One day you could be grilling burgers or searing a steak… Another you could be smoking pork shoulder at low temperatures… And on yet another day, you could be baking up an apple pie for dessert!

Starting to see the potential here?

You’ve got a world of outdoor cooking potential right at your fingertips… With a single appliance. (A standalone smoker can’t do that!)

Technology Keeps You in the Loop

close up of temperature gauge on pellet grill

Unlike a traditional smoker… You don’t have to be “on-call” all the time with a pellet grill.

What do we mean by this?

Normally, when you cook food… You can’t stray too far away.

Anything could go wrong at a moment’s notice… So you need to be nearby to check and make adjustments on the fly.

With the technology in most pellet grills… You don’t need to be leashed to it all the time.

These days, most pellet smokers offer Wi-Fi or bluetooth connectivity to your phone.

Which means… You can consistently check temperatures of the smoker (and meat probes) remotely.

So you can go about your day worry-free… Knowing you can check on your pork butt’s progress no matter what you’re doing.

Not only does this provide excellent peace of mind… You can multitask without concern about screwing up your dinner!

Ease of Use Saves You Time

We’ve already discussed convenience… But it’s important to hammer home how much time you can save by using a pellet smoker.

By being so beginner friendly and easy to use… A lot of steps are removed from the process, allowing you to save a boatload of time.

What steps?

Starting and managing a fire.

Especially if you don’t have the skill… Starting a fire can take a long time and become quite frustrating.

You could easily be standing out there for a half hour or more, desperately waiting for your fuel to catch flame.

And once you’ve managed that… You have the exasperating task of waiting for your smoker to come up to temp. (And manage the fire throughout the day.)

This requires frequent checks and adjustments! And it can become massively annoying if the temperature goes off track… And you don’t know how to fix it quickly.

Of course, as you learn and get a few mistakes under your belt… This becomes easier and you can handle it.

However, that’s many hours of time you need to invest… And you might end up with some failed BBQ as a result.

So if you’d rather not bother with these struggles… A pellet grill is going to sound a lot more appealing.

Pellet Grill Disadvantages

With all that said… A pellet grill isn’t without its problems.

Nothing is perfect!

So let’s see where a pellet smoker shows some cracks.

Pellet Grills Can be Fragile

While technology can be a great tool for efficiency… It can also cause some serious headaches when it decides to malfunction.

And in this way, unfortunately… Pellet smokers can be quite fragile.

Digital control panels and app connectivity are susceptible to bugs and failure.

And if your digital control panel turns out to be on the fritz… It makes your pellet grill quite literally unusable.

It’s not a quick fix, either. You’re at the mercy of the customer service department for assistance… And it’s not always something that can be solved remotely.

Which means your pellet grill might be out of commission for weeks!

That’s frustrating.

So while you gain a ton of convenience with a pellet smoker… You also sacrifice some reliability and your ability to repair malfunctions.

Jams are a Challenge

Technology issues aside… This type of grill is also susceptible to mechanical malfunctions.

If you’re not careful… Wood pellets can get jammed in the auger.

This happens when your pellets are exposed to humidity and take on moisture.

The pellets swell… And get stuck inside the smoker.

And that leaves you with only one thing you can do.

Pull out the entire auger and unjam it yourself. And depending on which pellet grill you have… The difficulty level of this varies widely.

Either way, it can be done. But it will take some time and effort!

Thankfully, this issue is fairly easy to prevent. Keep your wood pellets stored in a dry, sealed location. And when you’re done grilling, put any unused pellets back into storage.

You Need Electricity

outlet inside outdoor kitchen

If you’re settling in on the idea of a pellet smoker… You’ll also have to think about how your newfangled grill will be powered.

Unlike a regular offset or kamado smoker… Pellet grills need a source of electricity to ignite the pellets.

Generally, this isn’t a big deal. But it’s important to know this ahead of time.

If you already have a way to access electricity outdoors… That’s great!

If not, that’s a little wrinkle you’ll need to smooth out first.

Flavor will be Slightly Lacking

Rounding up our disadvantages… This may become the sticking point if you’re a real stickler for authentic, smoky flavors.

Make no mistake, a pellet grill will make delicious smoked meats.

However…

It won’t be quite the same tier that a kamado or offset smoker can produce. (Offset smokers in particular are the best-of-the-best.)

Why is this?

It’s simply that wood pellets are a bit further away from pure charcoal or wood that you’d normally be smoking with. And as a result… You lose some of that flavor in the process.

Pure hickory wood will be more flavorful than hickory pellets, for example.

If you don’t care about getting top-notch, competition-grade barbecue… This slight drop in smoke flavor won’t be a big deal to you.

But if you’re all about the flavor… This might be something to keep in mind before you move forward.

Smoker Advantages

Alright. Now that you’ve seen everything a pellet smoker has to offer… What about regular smokers?

For the sake of simplicity, we’ll be lumping offset, kamado, and charcoal smokers into one category.

Yes, there are some differences… But overall, the advantages and disadvantages will be the same across the board.

Simple, No-Fuss Construction

tamara day cooking a pizza on a coyote asado smoker

First things first… Analog smokers feature a straightforward construction.

There’s no digital control panels, attached meat probes, igniters, or electric hookups.

It’s just you and the grill. Au naturel.

The simplicity of this in and of itself can be quite nice.

But more importantly… You’re not having to deal with tech issues.

Sure, you won’t get to set the exact cooking temperature you want. But you won’t be barred from using your smoker due to a fringe tech problem!

If something goes wrong with your charcoal or offset smoker… It’s generally as simple as purchasing a replacement part.

The only thing you’ll have to ensure is that your smoker is made with high quality materials. (Same goes for a pellet grill, for that matter.)

Always look for complete 304 stainless steel construction… As this will provide the most resistance to rust and corrosion.

Best-in-Class Flavor

While this was already mentioned as a ding on pellet grill/smokers… We’d be remiss not to bring this up as an advantage.

Because far and away… Top notch flavor is the primary reason why aspiring pitmasters opt for charcoal or offset smokers over a pellet grill.

There’s a reason why BBQ competitions tend to center around the use of offset smokers specifically.

Offset smokers rely on pure wood to get that smoke flavor… And being as close to the source as possible, you retain the full essence of smoke flavor.

As for lump charcoal, it’s only one step removed from the pure source. Whereas, hardwood pellets require processing… And lose some volatile flavor compounds in the process.

So if you’re after the most pure smoke flavor possible… A traditional smoker makes a compelling argument for your next backyard purchase.

Can Grow into Expert Skill Level

The skill level to run a traditional smoker is truly a double edged sword.

On the one hand, it’s incredibly difficult to get the hang of. (Which we’ll get to.)

But if you stick it out and stay committed… What you learn can truly make you become an expert pitmaster.

Now, this is only appealing if you truly want to become an expert at smoking and slow cooking food.

If the idea of participating in BBQ competitions excites you… Or you’re just chasing a sense of accomplishment… The challenge of a charcoal, kamado, or offset smoker might be appealing to you.

Smoker Disadvantages

At the same time… There’s no shortage of cons for a traditional smoker.

They might make up a lot of ground in the flavor department… But that does cause weaknesses to show in other areas.

Let’s take a look.

High Skill Cap

As we just mentioned a moment ago… Traditional smokers are tough to get the hang of.

Pellet grills are a “set it and forget it” type of appliance. You tell it to do what you want… And it does it.

Traditional smokers don’t have the luxury of that option.

You have to start the fire yourself, get things up to temp… And meticulously keep the fire managed all day long.

While ribs might only take a few hours… If you’re smoking something like a brisket, you’ll be on call for 12 hours or more!

Not only is that an exhausting day… A lot of things can go wrong in that period of time. (And trust us, things will go wrong.)

If you’re a beginner… Using a charcoal, kamado, or offset smoker is not for the faint of heart.

So if you’re someone who doesn’t like to nerd out on the details… A pellet grill might be the better choice for you.

ec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo.

Takes Time to Get Going

Here’s the other issue. Traditional smokers take a long time to get cranking.

Sure, pellet grills have some preheating time. But you’re just pushing a button and kicking back.

Getting a charcoal or offset smoker started takes work. Especially if you don’t know your way around starting a fire.

It takes time to get that wood or charcoal lit… And you don’t always get it right on the first try.

Sometimes, it can take about 20 minutes just to get a solid light.

And only then can you get your smoker preheated. Which is usually around another 20-30 minutes… As long as your fire stays lit.

Point is, it’s not exactly a linear process.

Getting a fire started is finicky… And even with tons of experience under your belt, it takes time and patience to get things going.

Some Smokers are a One Trick Pony

We have to start off this section with a caveat.

Kamado smokers are actually just as versatile as a pellet grill. You can smoke, sear, grill, and bake with great success across the board.

But charcoal smokers and offset smokers can’t make the same claim.

They’re designed to smoke meat… And that’s about it.

That’s fine if you’re only intending to smoke foods.

But if you want the flexibility to go beyond… These options simply won’t make the cut.

Final Thoughts: Where Should You Begin?

Jet tila using his pellet grill to cook pork

Still waffling back and forth?

For those leaning more heavily on the pellet grill side of things… Allow us to make a special recommendation: the Coyote pellet grill.

Coyote’s pellet grill is an absolute powerhouse for all your grilling and smoking needs.

With a temperature range of 175°F – 700°F… You can low smoke, grill, bake, and even sear with ease.

Plus, this grill comes equipped with solid 304 stainless steel construction and a lifetime warranty.

With the Coyote pellet grill, it’s truly a one-and-done purchase.

But no matter where you land on the offset smoker vs pellet grill debate… We have an excellent way to make the most of your new purchase.

An outdoor kitchen.

We know, it’s a huge purchase. (And a huge decision.)

But allow us to paint a picture for just a moment.

You’re getting ready to head outside and get a whole chicken prepped for a day of smoking.

You don’t have any counter space outside… So you need to take care of seasoning your bird inside.

That’s not too bad. You just make a little mess on your kitchen countertop that’ll have to be cleaned later.

But when you head outside… Where are you going to put your bird?

Most smokers have small, rickety side shelves… And it doesn’t feel very secure to set a wobbly whole chicken down onto it. But what other choice do you have?

So now you have a whole chicken dominating one of your side shelves. Doesn’t leave much room for utensils and work space… Does it?

And with one wrong move… That bird can roll off and hit the dirty ground with a distinctive splat.

That’s just one of the ways an outdoor kitchen can simplify your cooking process.

linear outdoor kitchen with double drawers, grill, power burner and coyote asado smoker

An outdoor kitchen will give you no shortage of counter space… Allowing you to sprawl out your prep space with seasonings, cutting boards, utensils, and more.

You’ll also have no shortage of storage space.

Need to store pellets or wood chunks? Want a place to keep your utensils? What about special seasonings?

Your outdoor kitchen will safely stow away all of the above.

There’s more to say… But for now, we’ll leave it at that.

So with that, we’ll take a technical approach, break down the key differences, and share some similarities to get to the bottom of the Traeger vs Pit Boss debate.

Quick Links:

Brand Backstories

Before we weigh the differences between Pit Boss vs Traeger… We first need to formally introduce you to today’s contenders.

Introducing Pit Boss Grills

Pit boss Logo

“Bigger. Hotter. Heavier.”

The Pit Boss mission statement is a bold one… But who are the brains behind it?

Dan Thiessen and his sons, Jeff and Jordan, founded the company Dansons in 1999 with the goal of converting sawmill waste into a reliable energy source.

It wasn’t long before Dansons Inc. became the company behind not one, but two well-known wood pellet grill brands: Louisiana Grills and Pit Boss.

Pit Boss is Dansons’ more affordable pellet grill option. It’s good for those who want to sink their teeth into the pellet smoking experience… But also don’t want to spend an arm and a leg to do so.

Today, Pit Boss is headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona. Manufacturing of all Pit Boss products takes place in China.

Introducing Traeger Grills

traeger grills logo

“United by flavor” is Traeger’s M.O… But a connected customer-base is hardly this company’s only claim to fame.

Joe Traeger — the man behind Traeger Grills — actually invented the pellet grill back in 1985 after learning all about wood heating stoves.

And for nearly two decades… Traeger was the only pellet grill supplier on the block.

Of course, plenty of other pellet grill manufacturers have since hopped on the bandwagon. (Pit Boss was one of the company’s earliest competitors.)

But Traeger’s near-20 year head start has certainly made them one of the most popular “practically priced” options, even today.

Traeger is headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah. As with Pit Boss, all manufacturing is done in China.

Traeger Grills vs Pit Boss Products at a Glance

With a better idea of who they are and where they came from… Let’s see what each brand offers.

Pit Boss Product Lineup

In addition to wood pellet smokers… Pit Boss also sells combo and vertical pellet smokers, charcoal grills, gas grills, and griddles.

Today, we’ll be zeroing in on just their standard wood pellet grill lineup.

In and of itself, Pit Boss’s pellet grill selection is immense. Their website features over 40 different standalone and tabletop pellet grill models.

For the most part, each Pit Boss pellet grill falls into three main categories:

pit boss sportsman pellet grill
The Sportsman Series
The Navigator Series
pit boss mahogany series
The Mahogany Series

Pellet grills in these series can be found just about anywhere… From online retailers to practically any local hardware store.

Pit Boss also has a handful of “Retailer Exclusive” models, including the Pit Boss Pro Series, the Lexington or Austin pellet grills, the Platinum Laredo model, or the Mile Hybrid wood pellet grill.

These can only be found at Walmart, Lowes, or other big box stores.

Despite all the different series, though, we found most current Pit Boss pellet grill models to be practically identical.

The only major differences are in cooking area, hopper size, and (in some cases) configuration.

The point is, don’t put too much stock in all the different labels.

Now, let’s turn our attention to Traeger.

Traeger Product Lineup

Like Pit Boss, Traeger also has a sizable lineup of products available.

Also like Pit Boss… Most Traeger grills can be bought through online retailers or at your local hardware store.

While mostly consisting of freestanding or portable pellet grills… Traeger did recently release their spin on a flat top griddle.

But that’s a topic for another time. Today, we’re here to talk about wood pellet smokers.

On that note, Traeger pellet grills also filter into three main categories.

traeger ironwood 885 grill
The Ironwood Series
traeger timberline 1300 generation 1
The Timberline Series
The Traeger Pro Series

Additionally, Traeger offers two portable pellet grill models; the Ranger and Tailgater.

Unlike Pit Boss pellet grills, the different Traeger models vary quite a bit depending on the series.

The Traeger Pro 575 and 780 are the simplest offerings… Lacking the fancy bells and whistles you’ll find on the Ironwood models.

But even the Traeger Ironwood grills can’t hold a candle to their newest Timberline series.

For more specifics, you can check out our in-depth guide on Traeger grills.

But now that you’ve gotten a feel for what each brand offers… It’s time to see which of the two is better suited to you.

Without further ado, let’s dive into our Pit Boss vs Traeger Grills comparison.

Pit Boss vs Traeger Pellet Grill Review: A Smoke-Filled Showdown

As you’ve just seen… Both Traeger and Pit Boss offer a lot of different pellet grill models.

So, you can probably imagine just how tough it would be to parse out every single tiny difference between every single grill.

But, we still wanted to do our Traeger Grill vs Pit Boss comparison justice.

So rather than get snagged on all the small nuances… We took a step back, looked through a broader lens, and identified some overarching similarities and differences between the two brands.

With that in mind, let’s start our Traeger vs Pit Boss showdown.

What’s Similar: Pit Boss and Traeger Grills Are Both Easy To Use

woman using a traeger timberline

Pellet grills and ease of use go hand in hand, no matter the brand.

You should be able to set temperatures with the touch of a button or turn of a knob… Pellets should automatically dispense through an auger to ignite in the firebox… And the smoker should take it from there.

At its core, pellet grilling is a “set-it-and-forget-it” cooking style… And both Pit Boss and Traeger meet this standard.

Each and every Pit Boss pellet grill comes equipped with a dial-in digital control board.

Each Traeger grill also has an easy-to-use control panel with a digital display.

What’s more, both brands will include at least one meat probe in the box… Which only adds to their astounding ease of use. This’ll allow you to keep tabs on internal temperatures of individual meats, with minimal effort.

In some cases, you’ll even be able to set and monitor temperatures from your mobile device… Which brings us to our next point.

What’s Similar: Some Models are WiFi Compatible... Others Are Not

When it comes to Traeger vs Pit Boss pellet grills… You’ll either get WiFi capabilities, or you won’t. It all comes down to the model you choose.

For Pit Boss, look for grills with the “Legacy” WiFi Controller.

For WiFi Compatible Traeger grills, keep your eyes peeled for their “WiFire” system.

If the grill model you choose has WiFi compatibility… It’ll enable a fully remote grilling experience.

The WiFi connectivity hooks up to a Pit Boss or Traeger app… So you can monitor your cooks and toggle temperatures from literally anywhere.

In either case, it’ll only enhance an already easy cooking experience… So both Traeger and Pit Boss get another point from us.

What’s Similar: Temperature Range is a Tight Fit

traeger timberline digital screen
pit boss temperature screen

Taking a look at the Traeger smoker vs Pit Boss temp range… There’s really not much of a tiff.

Every Pit Boss grill has a temperature range between 180-500 degrees.

Traeger’s falls between 165-500 degrees. (With two exceptions being their Tailgater and Ranger, which cap at 450.)

What’s more… Both pellet grill brands have features that allow you to direct flame sear at a much higher temperature. For Pit Boss, it’s their Flame Broiler Lever. For Traeger, it’s the Modifire bottom rack.

Sure, Traeger dips slightly lower than Pit Boss… But it’s not really enough to ruffle our feathers.

And because the two brands have similar temperature outputs… Both Pit Boss and Traeger are quite alike when it comes to versatility.

Regardless of the brand you choose… You can do anything from smoking briskets or baking bread over indirect heat, to BBQing burgers or searing steaks over an open flame.

What’s Similar: Build Quality

traeger pellet smoker front shelf
pitboss pro series build quality

Moving right along to construction quality… This is yet another point where Traeger and Pit Boss share some common ground.

And we have to say — it’s not looking great for either brand.

All Pit Boss grills are constructed with a high temperature powder coated steel exterior.

The same goes for Traeger. Each model has powder coated steel construction.

To our dismay, neither brand reveals the grade of steel used beneath the powder coat… Which isn’t the best sign. If it’s not high quality, rust and corrosion will quickly make themselves known. (That’s why we prefer to see 304 stainless steel, which’ll stave off rust and corrosion.)

Looking inside… The cooking grates for Traeger and Pit Boss are also of a similar caliber, for the most part.

Traeger uses porcelain coated steel for all but one of their grills (the Timberline has 304 stainless steel grates).

Likewise, Pit Boss grills come with either porcelain coated steel or porcelain coated cast iron grates.

In either case, porcelain coated grates are notorious for chipping… Leaving the metal beneath prone to rust and corrosion (especially if cast iron).

The takeaway? If you’re looking for a long-term pellet grill solution… Neither Traeger nor Pit Boss will really cut it. (But stay tuned for a grill that will.)

What’s Similar: We’re Not Wowed by Either’s Warranty

When buying any outdoor appliance… You should always get acquainted with the warranty.

If anything were to go wrong, the warranty is like the ace up your sleeve. It’s that layer of protection if and when you need it.

But as neither Traeger nor Pit Boss use the highest quality materials for their pellet smokers… It’s no surprise that their warranties aren’t the most robust.

Every Pit Boss grill gets a blanket five year warranty.

Traeger Ironwood and Timberline grills get a longer ten year warranty… The Tailgater and Ranger get seven years… And the Traeger Pros have three years of coverage.

Now, we do have to give Traeger some credit for that ten year warranty. In the world of pellet grills, this is actually a decent deal.

But if you’re after a grill that’ll last longer… A lifetime warranty is really where it’s at.

What’s Different: Available Cooking Surface Sizes

Pit Boss Navigator

Alright. We’ve seen what Pit Boss and Traeger have in common… Now, it’s time to tackle what sets them apart.

We’ll start with grill sizes.

If you’re not too concerned with the dimensions… Either brand may be for you. Both Pit Boss and Traeger offer a hefty handful of mid-sized grills.

But if you’re a solo-griller after a small smoker, or need a gargantuan grill to host the whole neighborhood… This is where things get a bit in the weeds.

Pit Boss grills range from 256 square inches of cooking space all the way up to a whopping 1,610 square inches.

Traeger’s smallest model starts at 176 square inches, and their largest caps at a 1,320 square inch cooking surface.

If you’re after an ultra-compact model… Traeger takes the cake on this front.

But if your aim is to feed an army, Pit Boss is the obvious pick.

What’s Different: Pit Boss Grill vs Traeger Pellet Hoppers

traeger pellet hopper
Traeger Pellet Hopper
Pit Boss Pellet Hopper

Pit Boss and Traeger take a different approach to their pellet hoppers, in more ways than one.

For starters, the hoppers on Pit Boss grills tend to skew larger… With hopper capacity going up to 32 pounds.

Traeger, on the other hand, maxes out with a 22 pound pellet capacity.

Depending on the size of your grill and what you’re cooking, Traeger pellet grills will have to be refueled more often, which is a slight inconvenience.

All that said, though… Traeger’s hopper design is undeniably more user-friendly.

With Pit Boss, the most you’ll get is a pellet view window.

But with Traeger… Nearly every grill model features a convenient hopper cleanout feature, a view window, and a pellet sensor to alert you when supply is low.

What’s Different: Temperature Control & Precision

While the Pit Boss vs Traeger smoker temperature range is on par… The temperature precision and control actually prove to be quite different.

Pit Boss models can only be adjusted in increments of 25 degrees.

On the other hand, the Traeger Ironwood, Pro, Ranger, and Tailgater can be set in five degree increments… And the Timberline can be set within a degree.

If you’re trying to play it by the books and achieve those precise temps… Traeger will be the obvious choice.

For those more particular pitmasters… Precision is important. And unfortunately, Pit Boss grills just don’t provide it.

What’s Different: The Bells and Whistles

pit boss spice rack

We’ll cut straight to the chase… Traeger grills have a HUGE leg up on Pit Boss when it comes to the add-ons.

Generally, Pit Boss grills come standard with (at most) a built-in spice rack, a bottle opener, removable side and front shelves, a bottom shelf, tool hooks, and a dome thermometer.

While this is a decent array… It doesn’t even come close to Traeger’s extras.

With the Ironwood and Timberline Traeger grills, you’ll enjoy convenient multipurpose accessory rails that provide shelving space, tool hooks, storage bins, roll racks, and more.

You’ll also get a bottom shelf, a side shelf, and a grilling light.

Plus, nearly every Traeger model comes standard with both SuperSmoke and KeepWarm modes… Both of which do exactly as the name suggests.

So if you’re looking for a pellet grill that packs a bit more pizazz… Traeger deserves your attention.

But if you prefer simple smoking… Pit Boss will provide everything you need.

What’s Different: The Cleanup Process

a traeger grill being cleaned out and prepared for winter

Dealing with ash and grease is a pain… But it’s all a part of the course once you become a pellet grill owner.

So, let’s talk through the Pit Boss smoker vs Traeger cleanup processes.

With all Pit Boss grills… You’ll get either a simple steel drip tray or a steel bucket with foil liners.

You’ll have to empty grease from the tray or bucket… Clean the internal components of the grill… And use a hand vac to remove any ash buildup from the cooking chamber.

This is pretty standard practice for grease and ash management… So we really can’t complain.

The portable Traeger grills and Traeger Pro models also use this traditional grease-bucket system.

But for Traeger’s Ironwood and Timberline models… Things are a lot easier.

Here, Traeger has taken a thoughtful approach to the cleanup process with a one-of-a-kind EZ clean grease and ash keg.

This funnels all drippings and ash into one easily accessible keg, which simply needs to be removed, dumped, and replaced. Doesn’t get much simpler than that.

What’s Different: Price Points Vary

Last but not least, let’s address pricing for Pit Boss vs Traeger smokers.

Across the board, it’s clear that Pit Boss grills are the more budget-friendly offering… With costs set anywhere from $299 up to $1,099.

For Traeger, you’ll find that pricing skews a bit higher. Their smallest model starts at $499.99, and their largest caps at $3,299.99.

To clarify; A 1,600 square inch grill from Pit Boss will cost just over $1,000…. While Traeger’s 1,300 square inch Timberline will set you back over $3,000.

If grill size is all you care about… Pit Boss may be the clear choice. You’ll certainly save a dime, and still walk away with a hefty cooking area.

All that said, it’s not hard to see why Traeger grills cost a pretty penny more than Pit Boss.

You’ll get more features, easier cleanup (with some models), and more precise temperature control… To name a few perks.

So before you buy from either brand, really think about what’s important to you.

But with that, our Traeger vs Pit Boss pellet smoker standoff comes to a close.

What’s our final ruling?

Pit Boss Pellet Grill vs Traeger: Who Comes Out On Top?

Though we hate to leave you hanging… We can’t tell you that.

Your pellet smoking preferences and personal budget are truly the main criteria… And only you know what those are.

Understanding the similarities and differences between the two brands will certainly help set you straight… But at the end of the day, neither Pit Boss nor Traeger is better than the other.

If you’re looking for a larger, budget-friendly pellet grill that’ll get the job done… Pit Boss is a fine choice.

But if you don’t mind spending a little extra for flashier features… Traeger is probably the pick for you.

If you’re still on the fence… Do more research. Mull over all the options, comb through real-life customer reviews, and re-asses from there.

But before we let you go… There’s just one more point we must make.

Why Neither Brand May Be Right For You

As a reminder, neither Traeger nor Pit Boss pellet grills are intended to last for the long haul.

And because of this… It’s possible that neither Traeger nor Pit Boss are the right choice for you.

Especially if you’re looking for a long-term pellet smoking solution… You may find this to be true.

Not only will you have to replace a Traeger or Pit Boss pellet grill every few years…

But should you ever want to upgrade to a permanent pellet grill outdoor kitchen…. Neither brand is a suitable choice for a lasting setup.

And if longevity is on your list of must-haves… There’s really only one solution left.

Opting for a different pellet grill brand altogether.

How the Coyote Pellet Grill Compares

couple using their built in coyote pellet grill

If you’re on the quest for a quality pellet grill… Unfortunately, neither Pit Boss nor Traeger really have what it takes.

The good news? There are plenty of other brands that do… And of these brands, Coyote Outdoor Living is our number one pick.

Allow us to tell you why.

Coyote’s 28”-36” pellet grill is available in a freestanding or built-in configuration.

It features complete 304 stainless steel construction… And boasts a lifetime warranty, to boot.

Other specs are also a significant upgrade compared to Pit Boss vs Traeger smokers.

You’ll get a wider temp range, capping at 700 degrees. (Plus, a smoke and sear grate expands versatility.)

Temperature control is ultra-precise, down to the degree.

A double walled hood ensures impeccable heat retention.

And multiple cooking racks maximize space under the hood.

The only thing you’re missing is WiFi control. But aside from this, it’s clear that Coyote outperforms both Pit Boss and Traeger, by a landslide.

Currently, you’ll spend between $3,249.00 and $4,729.00 to get your hands on the Coyote pellet grill.

And while this may seem steep compared to certain Pit Boss and Traeger grills… Coyote’s pellet smoker is supposed to be a one time investment. You should never have to shell out more cash down the road!

Oh, and let’s not forget the best part. Should you ever decide to upgrade to a summer kitchen… The Coyote pellet grill is easy to incorporate into your island.

We at RTA have partnered with Coyote to make this possible… And if you want to learn more about your options, our Learning Hub is the best place to start.

We hope to speak soon.

What Is A BBQ Outdoor Kitchen?

Though often used interchangeably with the terms outdoor kitchen, BBQ island, grill island, or grill station… Most commonly, you’ll see the term “BBQ Kitchen” used to describe ready-made outdoor kitchen kits.

In other words, BBQ kitchens can be bought fully equipped and ready for use.

More than just a kitchen for BBQing… A BBQ kitchen provides a space for all things outdoor cooking.

In addition to a built-in BBQ grill, pre-crafted BBQ kitchens can include a combo of different components to meet your wildest outdoor cooking dreams… Some popular choices being:

And so on and so forth.

Depending on your needs, a BBQ kitchen can be a one-stop-shop for the ultimate summer hangouts…

Or, it can be a simple station to serve just you and your family.

But no matter what outdoor BBQ kitchen ideas you hope to fulfill… You need to get familiar with the different options.

Buying a BBQ Kitchen: What Are Your Options?

When buying a ready-made BBQ kitchen, you’ll have two main choices: modular outdoor kitchen cabinets or prefabricated grill islands.

Both of these are simple, DIY outdoor BBQ kitchen solutions…

But what sets the two apart?

Modular

Modular BBQ kitchens consist of multiple outdoor kitchen cabinets, otherwise known as “modules.”

Usually, these modules arrive fully finished and assembled for you, allowing for easy installation in your outdoor living space.

Each individual module will feature a different component. For example… You’ll have your pick of built-in grill cabinets, sink cabinets, refrigerator cabinets, or storage cabinets (to name a few).

Some modular outdoor kitchens are sold as multi-piece kits… While others can be bought one module at a time.

In either case, you can arrange modular outdoor kitchen cabinets to form your own BBQ kitchen layout… And it can have as much (or as little) functionality as you’d like. (Want additional cooking power? Just add another module!)

Prefab

ready to finish or prefab outdoor kitchen with bar seating and built in grilll

Prefab BBQ outdoor kitchens are the other “in stock” option.

Much like modular, these outdoor BBQ kitchen kits come pre-built with an integrated finish.

Appliances, countertops, and other accessories are also already included.

So, how are prefab outdoor kitchens really any different?

Well, unlike modular BBQ kitchen islands… Each and every component in a prefab grill station is a part of the same structure.

There’s no need to pick and choose modules or piece them together in your backyard…

And all you have to worry about is unboxing a pre-built kitchen. (That said, getting a beefy BBQ island to your backyard can pose its own set of challenges… Which we’ll talk more about later.)

Now that you have a baseline understanding… It’s time to get a better feel for these two options.

And what better way to do so… Than reviewing real-life BBQ kitchen brands?

By the end, we’ll reconvene to see which (if any) is best for you.

Modular BBQ Kitchen Brands To Mull Over

We’ll kick off with the modular BBQ kitchens.

We’ve included some of the biggest names on the BBQ kitchen block… So let’s see how each stacks up.

Thor Modular BBQ Kitchen

thor pizza oven refrigerator drawer sink BBQ outdoor kitchen
Product Highlights

Price: up to $7000.00

Materials: 304 Stainless Steel

Warranty: 2 years

On top of selling indoor kitchen appliances… Thor also offers a decently sized lineup of portable outdoor kitchen modules.

To be exact, they bring five different BBQ island modules to the table.

These include a built-in liquid propane or natural gas grill module with drawers…

A wood-fired pizza oven module with double storage doors…

An outdoor refrigerator cabinet…

An outdoor kitchen sink and faucet module…

And finally, a corner cabinet module for extra counter space and dry storage.

As far as functionality goes… The Thor modular kitchen covers all the basic BBQ kitchen needs.

That said, there are still only five modules… So in many ways, you will be limited.

thor stainless steel outdoor kitchen

Aesthetics may also be a sticking point.

Each and every Thor outdoor kitchen module is constructed fully with 304 stainless steel.

While this means rust and corrosion won’t be an issue… It also results in quite a polarizing look.

And unless you have a modern, industrial space… A Thor outdoor kitchen may stand out like a sore thumb. (Aesthetics aside, stainless steel countertops and cabinets will get unbearably hot in the summer sun.)

Looking past style… A Thor outdoor kitchen will be easy to order and set up in your space.

And the upfront cost seems quite fair, too! For all five modules, you’ll end up spending just under $7,000. (For some perspective, the national average outdoor kitchen cost hovers around $13,000.)

Now, take this “cost-effectiveness” with a grain of salt. Despite the 304 stainless steel construction… Thor outdoor kitchen modules are only covered under a two year warranty.

So if you were hoping to get more years of use from your $7,000 investment… Thor probably isn’t for you.

Char-Broil BBQ Kitchen Outdoor

Char-Broil Medallion Outdoor Kitchen Gas Grill
Product Highlights

Price: $400.00 – $2,000.00 per module

Materials: Unknown stainless steel, granite countertops

Warranty: Varies depending on the component, the best is 10 years

Moving right along… Let’s have a peek at Char-Broil’s selection of outdoor kitchen modules.

Char-Broil may be better known for their standalone gas grills…

But not too long ago, they also began manufacturing their own modular BBQ kitchens.

Char-Broil’s modular outdoor kitchen selection comprises a handful of pre-designed BBQ island sets… As well as individual module options.

Looking at their individual modules, the following components are available for you to mix and match:

 • 3- or 5-burner built-in gas grill modules with storage drawers
 • A stainless steel flat top griddle module with an access door
 • A double side burner cabinet
 • An “entertainment” module featuring a drop-in cooler, outdoor kitchen sink and faucet, storage space, and a pull-out trash bin
 • An undercounter outdoor refrigerator cabinet with additional storage space
 • A corner module to transform a linear layout into an L- or U-shaped BBQ kitchen
charbroil outdoor kitchen countertop with cooking utensils and food

As with Thor, Char-Broil’s selection of outdoor kitchen modules bring on decent functionality… With multiple options for outdoor cooking, and additional accessories to add convenience.

However, you’re still left to work around limited functionality. If you wanted a charcoal grill, kamado, or pellet smoker, for instance… You’re sore out of luck.

We also need to address Char-Broil’s choice of materials.

Char-Broil relies on steel-frame construction with painted steel exteriors… But the grade of steel used isn’t specified.

The stainless steel used for their built-in grill, doors, and other accessories is also not brought up.

So without knowing exactly what these are made of… It’s tough to say how a Char-Broil BBQ kitchen will hold up outdoors. But based on customer reviews, we’d say that rust and corrosion are a common concern.

Really, the only thing we don’t have a gripe with are Char-Broil’s granite countertops!

Warranty coverage varies across the different components… But generally speaking, the best you’ll get is 10 years. (To put it in perspective, a lifetime warranty is our usual standard.)

And while this is better than Thor’s warranty, it’s still not the greatest… And goes to show that a Char-Broil BBQ kitchen is another short-term solution.

Finally, concerning cost, you’ll spend roughly between $400 and $2,000 per module.

Though cheaper than your average outdoor kitchen project… It might not be a wise investment if you’re hoping it will last a decade or more.

Ikea Outdoor BBQ Kitchen

ikea outdoor kitchen
Product Highlights

Price: up to $1,300.00

Materials: Unknown stainless steel

Warranty: Unknown

Our final modular outdoor kitchen BBQ island is from Ikea.

Now, Ikea’s Grillskar outdoor kitchen lineup isn’t all that different from the other offerings we’ve discussed.

It contains five individual modules… From gas grills, to sinks, to shelving, to side burners.

Additionally, Ikea does also offer a charcoal grill module... Which hasn’t crossed our paths yet!

So if you’re all for smoky flavors, this simple BBQ kitchen setup may have some more appeal.

Like Char-Broil, Ikea’s modular BBQ kitchens can be purchased as a predesigned set…

Or, you can choose to mix and match modules as you see fit.

In either case, you’ll be working with a powder-coated steel frame… Which certainly isn’t what we’d call “indestructible.”

l shape ikea outdoor kitchen with appliances

And as with Thor, Ikea uses stainless steel for their countertops and appliances… But unlike Thor, we can’t say for sure what grade these are.

The fact that we couldn’t even find a warranty doesn’t lead us to believe that Ikea uses 304 stainless steel…

And because of this lack of clarity across the board, it’s safe to say that this is yet another short-term solution.

The good news, though, is that this is by far the cheapest modular BBQ kitchen.

For Ikea’s largest L-shaped island… You’ll only spend just over $1,300 for every included cabinet.

Now, this drastically lower price doesn’t reflect too highly on the quality of Ikea modular kitchens, per se…

But that said, at least you won’t really be breaking the bank for a kitchen that’ll last (at most) a few years.

Buzzworthy Prefab BBQ Kitchen Kits

With modular outdoor kitchens squared away…

It’s time to shift our focus to the prefab offerings.

As a reminder, these are also ready-made… But unlike modular kitchens, each and every component is included within the same structure.

With that, let’s talk through a couple of the leading brands.

Cal Flame BBQ Islands

Product Highlights

Price: $3,000.00 – $11,000.00

Materials: Galvanized steel frame with Hardibacker cement board

Warranty: 1 year

Cal Flame offers a hefty handful of prefabricated linear, U-shaped, and L-shaped BBQ kitchen kits.

Typically, these can be found at your big box stores… Like Lowe’s, Home Depot, Costco, and the like.

These’ll be fully constructed when they arrive at your backyard… Which can make getting them set up quite a tricky task. (Especially if you opt for a larger island!)

So just be warned… If backyard access is limited, you may need heavy machinery to get your grill island where it needs to be.

Now, back to their offerings.

Cal Flame’s BBQ kitchens can be split into two categories: Pavilion and BBK.

With the Pavilion Island option, you’ll be able to pick your choice of components from Cal Flame’s own appliance selection… Including gas or charcoal grills, sinks, storage, fridges, flat tops, and burners. (Generally, Bull uses 304 stainless steel for their outdoor kitchen components… But they also occasionally make use of lower quality 430 stainless steel, so watch out for this!)

cal flame l shaped outdoor kitchen island

The BBK islands, on the other hand, come fully pre-designed for you.

In either case, the countertop and finish will be at your discretion.

For the countertop, your options include either granite, porcelain, or natural stone…

As for the exterior finish, you can choose between stucco, natural stone, or synthetic wood panels.

No matter what finish you choose, Cal Flame BBQ kitchens are composed of a galvanized steel frame with Hardibacker cement boards.

And we must say… This is far from an ideal construction method for your BBQ kitchen!

Cement boards and metal frames are a poor match-up for humid and northern climates.

And without getting too in the weeds… Freeze/thaw cycles and moisture can wreak havoc on cement boards, causing the exterior finish of your island to crack or crumble.

Then, this leaves the internal frame exposed to the elements… And rust and corrosion will make themselves at home.

And it’s all downhill from there.

Perhaps this explains why Cal Flame BBQ islands are only covered by a one year warranty! Unfortunately, this method doesn’t bode well for longevity.

But if you’re after a simple, short-term solution… Current pricing averages between $3,000 and $11,000.

Price: $8,000.00 – $23,000.00

Materials: Steel frame and cement board

Warranty: 1 year

When it comes to prefab BBQ kitchens… Bull is yet another major player.

A Bull BBQ island will arrive at your home mostly assembled… You’ll just need to place the appliances and accessories to finish it off.

As with Cal Flame… This can make Bull Outdoor Kitchens quite tricky to maneuver into your backyard.

But backyard logistics aside… What does Bull’s prefab kitchen selection look like?

Well, Bull offers a large range of linear and L-shaped outdoor kitchens.

While these are all designed and ready-to-order with pre-selected components… Bull does also offer an online design tool to “customize” your prefab kitchen.

With this, you’ll simply be able to toy around with predetermined layouts and Bull’s outdoor kitchen appliance selection.

Speaking of appliance selection… Your options will include Bull’s built-in gas grills, side burners, outdoor kitchen storage, and undercounter fridges.

Bull typically uses 304 stainless steel for their outdoor kitchen components… But keep an eye out for outliers.

Their outdoor kitchen fridge, specifically, is actually NOT rated for outdoor use… So you’ll want to thoroughly scope out all other inclusions for peace of mind.

As for the quality of the island itself… Bull and Cal Flame are once again on common ground.

Bull BBQ kitchens are constructed with steel frames and cement boards… Which we’ve already given you the spiel on.

These are finished with your choice of quartzite, faux rock, or HDPE.

For their countertops… You’ll get three different types of tile to choose from. (Unless you like cleaning gunk out of grout… Tile is not something we’d recommend!)

Currently, the MSRP for Bull BBQ islands is set between $8,000 and $23,000, approximately.

But again, Bull only backs their BBQ islands with a one year warranty… So do some serious thinking before you make this splurge.

The Verdict On Premade BBQ Kitchens

Alright. Now that you’ve seen a mix of both modular and prefab BBQ kitchens…

You probably picked up on a few common themes.

Though their ease and inexpensive price tag may certainly be appealing… After reviewing some of the most popular prefab and modular brands, you can start to see that they aren’t exactly the best choice.

Let’s recap on why this is.

Across the board, our major gripe is with the poor material quality and lackluster warranties.

Both modular cabinets and prefab islands alike are most often made with lower grades of steel or shoddy metal frame systems… Which are a rust- and corrosion-risk waiting to happen.

It’s one thing if you’re looking for a short-term solution…

But in our eyes, an outdoor kitchen should be built to last a lifetime. And ready-made BBQ kitchens just don’t cut it.

You’ll spend the time arranging modules or transporting a prefab island to your backyard… Just for it to give out in a few short years. How frustrating!

And on top of low caliber construction… There’s also the lack of creative freedom to deal with.

With each and every option we discussed, your choices are severely limited when it comes to customizing layout, finish, dimensions, and (most notably) the appliances you can include.

Though there were one or two exceptions, practically every brand listed offered only built-in gas grills as the “main source” of cooking power.

And while this may be fine for some homeowners… What if you’re looking to test out other types of cooking? A gas grill doesn’t always fit the bill.

By and large, these are truly a “you-get-what-you-see” solution.

And 99% of the ready-made BBQ kitchens we discussed were pretty limited… In more ways than one.

So, where does this leave you?

A Better BBQ Kitchen Alternative

We’ve laid out the challenges of typical ready-made BBQ kitchens…

And it’s clear to see… Most of the options out there fall short.

So if you’re not willing to settle for a pre-made BBQ kitchen… How do you proceed?

Though it may not be “ready made,” so to speak… We have an alternative solution that we think will spark your interest.

RTA Quick Ship Kitchens

Product Highlights

Price: >$13,000.00

Materials: 304 stainless steel, concrete, granite countertops

Warranty: Limited lifetime

Perhaps you want the ease and convenience of a pre-made outdoor BBQ kitchen…

But you’re after an outdoor kitchen that’s actually built to last.

Or, maybe you’re simply hoping to get more from your grill island.

If you can relate, allow us to bring your attention to RTA.

Our Quick Ship outdoor kitchens are a solid alternative to pre-built BBQ islands.

They may not arrive at your door fully assembled, per se…

Rather, they come 95% complete and ready to assemble.

This is because our islands are composed of composite concrete panels rather than individual cabinets or pre-built frames.

So you will have to piece these panels together, place your appliances, and top it off with a countertop.

We know you’re after as much ease as possible… But don’t be deterred by this.

Though it may seem more intimidating, assembling an RTA island is about as involved as piecing together cabinets in a modular outdoor kitchen.

Our kitchen kits can be assembled by yourself or one of our Pro-installers in just one afternoon… And that little bit of extra effort needed up front will be more than worth it in the long run.

Why’s that?

Well, for one, our kitchen islands are all backed by a limited lifetime warranty.

And from the composite concrete panels, to the concrete or granite countertops, to high-quality 304 stainless steel appliances from Coyote Outdoor Living… These BBQ islands are built to last, rain or shine.

So, you’ll have to put in a tiny bit more work than you would with a prefab or modular offering… But you’ll also gain much better quality.

And that’s not all!

Our Quick Ship BBQ kitchens also grant you more creative control.

We have a much wider selection of options to peruse than your average online BBQ kitchen brand.

In addition to gas or charcoal grill islands… You’ll also find options with pellet grills, kamado smokers, side burners, power burners, flat top griddles, electric grills, and pizza ovens.

And of course, the standard storage, sink, fridge, and accessory options will also be at your disposal.

As for pricing?

It is more of a middle-ground option, and our linear and L-shaped kitchen kits hover around the $13,000 national average.(Our custom islands, on the other hand, do tend to come at a higher price.)

But don’t forget, this is meant to be a one-time investment. An RTA kitchen will last you a lifetime… And you won’t be dishing out more dough down the line to repair or replace it.

Get The Ball Rolling On Your BBQ Kitchen

We’ve covered a whole lot in this article… From what a BBQ kitchen is, to why ready-made options probably aren’t your best bet, to a much better solution.

By this point, you should feel more prepared to tackle your own outdoor kitchen project.

But if you’re still not 100% sure how to dive in… Don’t worry.

When you choose to work with RTA, you won’t have to go at it alone.

Check out our Learning Hub… Browse through our Quick Ship BBQ islands…

Interpreting Infrared: What Sets These Gas Grills Apart?

GAS BURNER

INFRARED BURNER

Before we jump into the world of infrared gas grilling… Some clarification is in order.

What is an infrared gas grill?

To best answer this… We need to start with a quick science lesson on infrared heat.

Infrared heat is the simplest form of heating, involving the direct transfer of heat from a source to an object or material, without warming the surrounding air.

Now, how does this concept apply to grilling?

Simply put, infrared gas grills use special technology to cook with infrared heat.

This infrared technology refers to an element between the flames and the grill grates. As flames from the grill burners heat up this element, it in turn emits the heat directly and evenly onto the cooking surface, without losing excess heat to the air.

Following along so far?

To paint an even clearer picture… Let’s now examine how gas infrared grills stack up against the standard gas grills we all know and love.

Want to bring your idea to life?

Use our free 3D design tool to bring the outdoor kitchen of your dreams to reality in just a few minutes.

Infrared Grill vs Gas Grill

To further flesh out your understanding of infrared gas grills, let’s conduct an infrared vs gas grill comparison.

Both cooking systems feature gas-powered burners… So how different can they really be?

Quite different, as it turns out!

As a reminder, infrared gas grills use a special element between the flame and cooking grates, which allows heat to directly transfer to food on the cooking surface.

Traditional gas grills, however, don’t have that barrier between the flame and grates.

This means that standard gas grill burners don’t directly transfer heat to the grill grates… And will instead heat the surrounding air, which then cooks your food.

As you can see, infrared grills undoubtedly take a different approach than their conventional counterparts.

So, let’s see how this different approach may put you at an advantage. (Or dare we say disadvantage.)

Infrared Grills Get Hotter, Faster

Infrared grills directly impart heat to an element, while standard gas grill burners strive to heat every square inch of air in your grill.

This key difference gives infrared grills the ability to reach significantly higher temperatures at a much faster rate.

We’ll share more specifics, shortly… But generally speaking, high-quality infrared grill models can reach maximum temperatures pushing 1,000 Fahrenheit in under ten minutes.

These sky-high temperatures drastically cut down total cook time… Making infrared gas grills the all-around more efficient option.

Infrared Grills Retain More Moisture

Traditional gas grill burners heat up the air inside your grill… And it’s this hot air that actually cooks your food.

Unfortunately, this process is not only more time consuming… But it also affects the quality of your dishes.

In standard gas grills, the hot air leeches quite a bit of moisture from your food as it cooks, resulting in drier meals.

But since infrared grills don’t rely on hot air to cook… Food cooked with infrared technology is able to retain more moisture.

Additionally, quicker cook times give meats less time to lose delicious drippings… Keeping your food even juicier. (Not to mention, simplifying the cleanup process!)

d gas grill burners strive to heat every square inch of air in your grill.

Infrared Grills Allow For More Consistent Heating

When grilling over conventional gas burners… Inconsistent heating is a common challenge.

Flare-ups from drippings can cause hot spots… And if you’re grilling on colder days, ensuring even heating across the entire cooking surface can be a struggle.

However, infrared grills won’t be as prone to these pesky cooking inconsistencies.

Because the infrared element evenly distributes heat across the entire cooking surface… Hot and cold spots become practically non-existent, and maintaining a consistent temperature is almost always trouble-free.

Versatility Can Be Limited

As with most good things, there are some potential drawbacks to infrared cooking.

Many infrared gas grills could be considered one-trick-ponies… With a sole ability: fast and hot searing.

Now, if you’re someone who’s always on board to savor perfectly seared, steakhouse-quality meats… This isn’t a bad thing.

But for those who want to diversify their menu, gas grill infrared burners may feel limiting.

Because traditional gas grills offer more leeway for cooking at lower temperatures, you might find them better suited for preparing a wider variety of cuisines.

That said, not all infrared grills are single-skilled… So stay tuned for a simple workaround to this.

There’s A Learning Curve

In the same vein… Infrared grills do introduce a bit of a learning curve.

Unlike a standard gas grill, things won’t start off so cut and dry.

Particularly if you’re not accustomed to intense, high-heat grilling… It’s quite easy to accidentally overcook or burn your food on an infrared gas grill.

So, if you choose to upgrade to infrared… Expect a period of trial and error.

Pricing Is Higher

budgeting to save money on outdoor kitchen

Lastly, it’s worth noting that gas grills with infrared burners often come at a higher cost than traditional gas grills.

It makes sense!

Infrared grills incorporate special technology… And you’re paying a premium for those additional features.

While the elevated price may give some homeowners pause… For others, investing in infrared is a no-brainer.

And if you find yourself agreeing with the latter sentiment… Of course, you’ll want to be sure that your money is well spent on the absolute best infrared grill.

Infrared Grill Buying Guide

So, you’re on board to get an infrared BBQ grill.

But before you do… There’s still much to know.

Let’s run through some key purchasing considerations.

What Type Of Infrared Burner Is Right For You?

When considering an infrared gas grill… Your first course of action should be deciding what type of infrared burners are best suited to you.

There are three common types of infrared burners, each with distinct designs, different temperature ranges, and varying preheat times.

All of these factors play a huge role in your overall cooking experience… So let’s see what each burner type brings to the table.

Ceramic Infrared Burner

Ceramic infrared burners are the most common option.

These consist of stainless steel burners topped with a ceramic surface, positioned below the cooking grids.

This design produces tons of small, intensely hot flames… Allowing ceramic infrared grills to reach consistently high temperatures within mere minutes.

Typically, the temperature range for ceramic infrared burners is between 600-1,000° Fahrenheit.

Now, this cooking system does fall victim to the “one-trick-pony” trope we touched upon earlier… As it can’t operate in the lower temperature ranges. That said, it’s still a solid option for searing meat hot and fast.

solaire ceramic infrared grill burner

Radiant Glass Burners

Compared to ceramic infrared burners… Radiant glass infrared grills aren’t nearly as commonplace.

In fact, this type of infrared burner is really only found in TEC grills… The brand which pioneered infrared grilling.

In this system, the cooking grid is positioned directly atop a radiant glass panel above a stainless steel burner.

This allows for even heat distribution, eliminates flare-ups, enables preheat times under ten minutes, and provides an impressive temperature range spanning from 200 to 900°.

This wider temp range opens the door to more cooking versatility… Which certainly has some appeal.

Heat Emitter System

Lastly, heat emitter infrared systems are the most practical choice for infrared grilling… But admittedly, these tend to pack the smallest punch.

This system features a stainless steel burner equipped with a metal heat emitter panel beneath the cooking grid.

The metal heat emitter panel usually features a unique grate design to ensure airflow is channeled away, allowing meats to stay tender and juicy.

Further, the heat emitter system will prevent flare-ups and effectively ensure even heat distribution.

But unfortunately, the temperature range is where this burner type falls short. Typically, this system can reach only 650°… Meaning it doesn’t even come close to matching the power offered by other infrared burners.

inside saber infrared grill hood

How Much Searing Power Do You Need?

When purchasing an infrared gas grill… You’ll usually encounter two options: all-infrared or hybrid-infrared.

As the names imply… An all-infrared grill features, well, all infrared main burners, while hybrid-infrared grills come with a mix of both standard grill burners and infrared burners.

Before you commit to any old infrared grill… You’ll definitely want to consider just how much searing power you really need.

If you’re all for hot and fast, bistro-style searing… An all-infrared grill may be the obvious choice.

But if you want to enjoy a broader temperature range and enhanced cooking versatility… Opting for a hybrid-infrared grill will be your best option.

Now, you may be drawn to the benefits of infrared… But perhaps not enough to give up space in your grill. In this case, infrared side burners are another option worth considering.

You’ll have a dedicated BTU hotspot for all your searing needs… Separate from your actual gas grill.

But, we digress.

Let’s shift our focus back to infrared grills…

If you want to get a taste for infrared grilling, without breaking the bank… Char-Broil offers a line of budget-friendly freestanding or modular infrared gas grills.

Their selection ranges from compact 2-burner models to larger 5-burner grills.

Char-Broil’s Tru-Infrared cooking system uses heat emitter plates beneath the cooking grates. As a reminder, these typically have lower temp outputs, capping at 650°.

So, just know that this type of grill won’t last forever!

Despite this, the value is fair for what you get… With prices averaging between $300 and $800. (However, their modular options do cost a pretty penny, with prices hovering around two grand).

The main difference between each line is material quality. While the Deluxe model features an aluminum and powder-coated steel exterior… The Premium and Elite grills are constructed with full 304 stainless steel.

Further, the Elite model is equipped with a rotisserie motor… Which the Premium model lacks.

As for infrared cooking power… Saber utilizes a unique heat emitter system to generate infrared heat, and their grills can preheat as high as 700° in under ten minutes.

Their cooking grates are specially designed to provide even surface temperatures and prevent flare-ups… As well as divert airflow for maximum moisture retention.

The infrared emitter plate also effectively catches drippings and debris… And all Saber grills feature a built-in cleaning setting, plus a pull-out grease tray.

Best For Versatility: TEC Infrared Grills

TEC Infrared Grill

Price: $3,175.00 – $7,270.00

Warranty: Lifetime on exterior, 10 years for burners and cooking grates, 1 year for all other components.

Materials: Full 304 stainless steel

TEC infrared grills have been around since the 1980s… And as we mentioned earlier, these were the first of their kind.

Today, TEC offers four different series of all-infrared grills…. Including freestanding, built-in, and portable models.

All TEC grills are available with either one or two main burners… And range from 26” to 44.”

As we previously discussed, TEC’s 100% infrared technology is in the form of radiant glass panels… These ensure even heating, eliminate flare-ups, and can preheat between 200-900° in just ten minutes.

The wide temperature range here certainly lends itself to a vaster range of cooking possibilities than most other infrared grills.

As for construction, TEC is yet another solid option. All of their grills are fully constructed with 304 stainless steel. (Aside from the glass panel, of course.)

TEC warrants the stainless steel exterior for a lifetime… The burners and cooking grates are warranted for ten years… And all other components, including the radiant glass panels, are only warrantied for one.

Though we’d like to see longer coverage for the glass panel… We don’t have any other critiques.

FAQ

Infrared gas grills aren’t better than conventional gas grills, per se… But they do have some distinct advantages.

They heat up faster and hotter… They cook juicier and more tender meats and veggies… And they allow for more consistent, even heat distribution across the grilling surface.

Infrared grills have a few potential disadvantages. For starters, many are only intended for hot and fast searing… Which can limit versatility.

Next, cooking on infrared grills requires a learning curve… And accidentally burning your food isn’t unlikely.

Finally, infrared grills do tend to be a fair bit pricier than your average gas grill… Since you’ll be paying a premium for specialized infrared technology.

Infrared gas grills use special technology to cook with infrared heat.

This infrared technology refers to an element between the flames and the grill grates. As flames from the grill burners heat up this element, it in turn emits the heat directly and evenly onto the cooking surface, without losing excess heat to the air.

A Brief History Of Outdoor Wok Cooking

If you’re already a well-seasoned wok master… You can jump ahead.

But if you’re not up-to-speed on these classy pieces of cookware… Allow us to catch you up with an annotated history lesson.

Translated as “cooking pot” in English… The wok is believed to have originated from ancient China during the Han Dynasty.

This traditional Chinese cooking vessel has a deep, round bottom, conical shape, and sloping sides.

They’re designed just-so to evenly and efficiently distribute high heat around the pan.

Most commonly used for stir frying and fried rice… Wok cooking is all about achieving wok hei: a complex, charred profile resulting from high heat cooking and direct flame contact. (If you’ve ever enjoyed authentic Cantonese cuisine, you’re familiar with this coveted flavor.)

Traditional outdoor wok cooking was done in wood or coal fueled fire pits… But today, the craft is completed on high-BTU propane or natural gas outdoor wok burners.

Comprehensive Outdoor Wok Burner Buyer’s Guide

To master the craft of outdoor wok cooking… You need a burner that’s fit for the task.

Below are the top considerations to mull over in your quest for the best outdoor wok burners.

Look For High Heat Output & Excellent Efficiency

Before anything else, a good wok burner must be able to rapidly and reliably heat a wok. Otherwise, you won’t be able to achieve that smoky wok hei.

To quickly get your wok smoking hot, and ensure that heat is retained… A good wok burner needs to have a hefty BTU (British Thermal Unit) output.

To be exact, you shouldn’t settle for anything below 50,000 BTUs. (To put it in perspective, home kitchen gas stoves put out between 5,000 – 10,000 BTUs.)

If you’re looking for restaurant-grade wok burners… These typically push 100,000 BTUs and above.

But for the more casual crowd… Anything above the 50,000 BTU mark should sufficiently produce that delicious wok hei without taking an inordinate amount of time to preheat.

The Burner Shape Should Be Just Right

Next, let’s talk about burner shape.

This consideration is twofold. The shape of the burner ring directly plays into how the flame is distributed around your wok… And it also keeps your round bottom wok steady as you cook.

If the burner shape spreads the flame out in a wide pattern (wider than the bottom of your wok), the heat produced will be lost to the air too quickly.

This will make it difficult to achieve the red-hot temperatures you need for wok hei. (And it’ll increase the risk of singeing your fingers on the open flame… Ouch!)

Additionally, if the burner ring is too wide (or too small, for that matter), your wok won’t be secure while cooking, opening the door to spilled stir-fries and potential fire hazards.

To curb these challenges, look for burners that will fit the dimensions of your beloved wok.

And even if you wind up with a burner ring that isn’t a snug fit… Don’t despair. It’s not the end of the world.

Wok rings are a practical workaround!

These metal, circular attachments can be placed on your gas burner to support the round bottom of your wok, allow for more even heat distribution, and keep things steady as you cook.

Simply buy one of these bad boys to fit your wok… And you’re good to go.

Keep An Eye Out For Quality

Close up of Polished Stainless Steel material used in some bbq outdoor cabinets

As with any type of outdoor cooking appliance, opting for quality construction is always key.

This sentiment rings true especially for outdoor wok burners. When swirling or tossing a wok over an open flame… You shouldn’t have to worry that your entire burner is going to give out.

That’s why choosing a burner made with solid, stable, and heat-resistant materials is non-negotiable!

Generally, you’ll find outdoor wok burners made with cast iron, alloy steel, or stainless steel.

These metals aren’t flimsy, are heat-resistant, and should be fine for a time… But they’re not guaranteed to last forever.

Particularly when it comes to cast iron, alloy steel, and lower grades of stainless steel (201 and 430) Rust and corrosion are right around the corner.

If you opt for a cast iron or low-grade steel outdoor wok burner… You’ll want to store it somewhere dry after each and every use to stave off the inevitable and keep it structurally sound.

On the other hand, high quality outdoor wok burners will be constructed with 304 stainless steel.

This heavy duty metal has superior rust and corrosion resistance, and a 304 stainless steel wok burner will last year after year, even when left outdoors.

Consider Configuration

Finally, where do you want your outdoor wok burner to reside?

Depending on your preferences, you’ll have two options: freestanding or built-in to an outdoor kitchen.

Here’s a brief overview of each configuration…

Freestanding Outdoor Wok Burners

The majority of outdoor wok burners are freestanding.

In simple terms, this means they stand alone… Typically on legs or placed on a table.

Freestanding outdoor wok burners are for those without a dedicated outdoor cooking setup… Homeowners who want an impermanent option… Or for chefs who enjoy taking their culinary pursuits on the go.

Generally, you’ll encounter freestanding outdoor wok burners on three or four legs, which can be adjustable, removable, or both.

Both leg designs are suitable, if well-built… Though the three-legged tripod burners do tend to offer better stability (especially on uneven surfaces).

We’ll dive deeper into the specifics, shortly… But freestanding outdoor wok burners are typically the less expensive, lower caliber option. They’re generally made with cheaper materials.

That said, they do bring on the BTUs… But unfortunately they’re not usually built to last.

It’s also worth noting that if you opt for a freestanding outdoor wok burner, you’ll want to be sure to have a sturdy prep table to pair it with.

Wok cooking calls for tons of special tools and accessories that you’ll want to have on hand…

Plus, high heat wok cooking is a speedy affair… Which means you won’t have time to run back and forth for ingredients once the burner is on. The food should be prepped and within easy reach to add to the hot wok immediately.

If this is sounding like a hassle and a half… A built-in wok burner may be the better alternative.

Built-In Wok Stoves (AKA Power Burners)

What if you want your outdoor wok burner seamlessly integrated in a BBQ island?

Well, there are no true built-in outdoor wok burners… But many outdoor power burners offer a solid workaround.

Power burners are multipurpose appliances… And can be used for a variety of cooking tasks, from deep frying, to large stockpot boils, to — of course — wok cooking.

Unlike freestanding outdoor wok burners… Built-in power burners are designed specifically to be included in an outdoor kitchen island.

This provides plenty of counter space for getting food prepped and ready to go… Storage for your wok accessories… And even a sink or pull-out trash for easy clean upAll right beside your wok burner.

Generally, built-in power burners are a much larger upfront investment… Though they’re typically higher quality, longer lasting, and lower maintenance.

They also make outdoor wok cooking so much more convenient!

To better illustrate the differences between built-in and freestanding outdoor wok burners (and reveal which is better suited to you)… Let’s look at some specific models.

The Best Freestanding Outdoor Wok Burners

Now, it’s time for the outdoor wok burner reviews.

To begin, we’ll have a closer look at a few top freestanding models.

What are some best sellers?

Eastman Outdoors Portable Kahuna Burner

eastman outdoors portable burner
Product Highlights

Price: $91.86

Materials: Alloy steel

Warranty: 1 year limited

Let’s kick things off with the Eastman Outdoors portable propane outdoor cooker.

If you’re just testing the waters of wok cooking… This is a solid, budget-friendly starter option.

This freestanding outdoor wok burner stands on three adjustable height legs, from 18-26 inches. These legs are fully removable… So you can easily take your wok cooking on the road.

It’s suited for woks up to 18 inches… And comes with sturdy brackets to hold your cookware in place.

Now, this outdoor propane burner for wok may not quite hit the “restaurant-quality” mark… But it still packs a punch with 65,000 BTUs.

It comes with an adjustable propane regulator hose and a burner safety shut-off feature to ensure secure flow of pressure from the fuel source to your burner.

At just 12.3 pounds… This isn’t exactly the heaviest duty outdoor burner for woks, and build quality is where this model falls short.

It’s constructed with alloy steel… So unfortunately it’ll be prone to corrosion. To extend its lifespan… Keep it stored somewhere dry when not in use.

On a similar note… This propane wok burner is backed by a short one-year limited warranty. It won’t last forever.

Now, the price tag. At the time of writing, you can buy this wok outdoor burner for just $91.86.

Versatile Cooking Solution

GasOne B-3600 Outdoor Wok Burner Propane

GasOne Propane burner with cover
Product Highlights

Price: $99.99

Materials: Cast Iron

Warranty: 1 year

Originally designed as a brewing and boiling burner stove… The GasOne B-3600 can double as an outdoor wok burner, with some adjustments.

The burner ring is on the wide side… And the flame spread results in some heat loss.

To harness the full potential of this high-BTU burner… You’ll want to pair it with a wok ring. This will prevent wobbling woks… And keep the flame contained.

If you’re after a generous BTU output… This simple adjustment may be more than worth it. This outdoor wok burner churns out a colossal 200,000 BTUs!

A heat control knob, high-pressure adjustable regulator, and heat-resistant steel braided gas hose come standard with this jet burner for safety and ease of use.

Additionally, this little cooking powerhouse has a few other handy features in the box. This includes a cover, a full windscreen, and a heat dial.

As with the previous option… You’ll get removable, adjustable legs, if you’d like to use this burner as a camp stove. (This model stands on four 15-30” legs.)

It weighs just 15 pounds… So again, not the sturdiest option out there.

Speaking of build quality… GasOne claims cast iron construction.

While heat resistance shouldn’t be an issue… This burner isn’t a good match-up for the outdoor elements. Keep it inside and dry when not in use, or it’ll readily take on rust.

Like the previous model, you’ll again get a one-year warranty.

And at the time of writing, you’ll pay $99.99.

PowerFlamer Outdoor Wok Burner

powerflamer outdoor wok burner
Product Highlights

Price: $149.98 – $269.98

Materials: Cast Iron

Warranty: Not specified

The final freestanding model we’ll observe today is the PowerFlamer Propane 160 single burner from outdoorstirfy.com.

This freestanding outdoor wok burner stands on three legs. You can choose an 8” short leg model for tabletop use… Or a 30” long leg model for freestanding usage. The legs can also detach, if desired.

Now, the manufacturer suggests purchasing “long leg stabilizers” if your cooking style involves wok tossing… Which indicates that this particular burner may not be inherently heavy duty. (At this point… We can’t say we’re surprised!)

That said, this is the heftiest model so far, weighing in at 27 pounds.

No materials are specified, though at a glance it appears to be made primarily with cast iron.

There’s also no clear warranty for this model.

Despite this lack of clarity, this wok burner may still be a solid choice… And we’ve included it on our list for its top-notch performance, thoughtful features, and smart design.

This wok stove uses a 20 psi regulator to deliver high pressure propane gas for extreme cooking power, with heat output continuously adjustable from 0 to 160,000 BTUs.

Other useful features include a burner ring to concentrate heat at the center of your wok, a built-in heat guard to protect your hands from the open flame, and an adjustment valve at the end of the stainless steel braided gas line, which allows you to adjust your flame as you cook without messing with your propane tank.

It also comes with a stove wind guard, spider web guard, top burner plate, and a stove cover.

Currently, this model is the most expensive yet, with pricing set between $149.98 and $269.98.

Note that this product has a long lead time. Should you place an order, it may take as long as two months for the burner to ship.

The Best Built-In Outdoor Kitchen Wok Burners

Perhaps the following built-in models will speak more to your tastes.

Let’s see if these power burners live up to their name…

The all-commercial-stainless steel cooking system has dual burners with independent controls… For ease of use.

It also boasts a recessed top for wind protection.

Like Blaze, Alfresco’s warranty doesn’t disappoint. You’ll get a lifetime of coverage on the exterior, interior, cooking grates, and main burners.

While the grade of stainless steel isn’t exactly specified, this warranty hints that it is indeed 304 stainless.

At the time of writing, this model costs $2,299.00.

Coyote Built-In Power Burner

Perfect for culinary escapades small or large… Wok cooking is no exception to its wide versatility.

Remove the heavy duty stainless steel cooking grates… And you’re ready to use this power burner with Coyote’s high quality 304 stainless steel wok attachment.

As with the other built-in brands… Coyote stands behind their power burner with a lifetime warranty.

And as for the price… The Coyote built-in power burner can be yours for a one-time investment of $1,749.00.

The Overall Best Outdoor Wok Burner

coyote power burner in outdoor kitchen island

We’ve seen a variety of outdoor wok burners, both freestanding and built-in…

So now… Which earns the spot as our number one pick?

Before we spill the beans… Bear in mind that this decision is truly up to you. Only you know your preferences, what you’re looking for, your budget, and your cooking style… And now you have some solid contenders to consider!

That said, here’s our take:

First things first, we’d rule out the freestanding models altogether.

Though they pack an impressive BTU output… These outdoor wok burners are unfortunately not built to last.

You’ll have to drag your wok burner out of storage each time you want to use it… Hook it up to your propane tank… And haul out a table to keep your tools and ingredients within reach.

All in all, this doesn’t equate to a convenient outdoor cooking experience.

And in our eyes, the efficiency you’ll gain from the higher BTU output will be overshadowed by the hassle of setting everything up (and taking everything inside when you’re done).

So although they may cost a pretty penny… Our vote is for built-in outdoor wok burners.

These are higher quality, have better warranties, and will certainly hold up outdoors for quite a time.

Plus, you won’t have to worry about dragging these appliances indoors after each and every use.

And the best part? They’ll be flawlessly incorporated in an outdoor kitchen island, providing you with convenient storage for all of your wok accessories… Plus dedicated counter space to keep your tools and ingredients on hand as you cook.

Now that it’s down to built-in power burners… That leaves three contenders.

And of those three, we’d select Coyote!

Now, how is Coyote any different from the other power burners we discussed?

The BTU output is similar, the design and build quality is on-par… And pricing falls smack dab in the middle of our other two options.

Well, it’s simple.

This power burner is a high quality appliance, without a shadow of a doubt…

It can be paired with Coyote’s heavy duty stainless steel wok…

And even better, it’s the easiest to include in an outdoor kitchen.

Why Freestanding vs Built In Appliances Aren’t Interchangeable: 7 Top Safety Concerns https://rtaoutdoorliving.com/freestanding-vs-built-in-appliances/ Thu, 05 Oct 2023 13:58:44 +0000 https://rtaoutdoorliving.com/?p=70405 Read more]]>

You’re planning to build a BBQ island, and have been browsing through all the different outdoor appliance options.

At this point, you’ve likely noticed that there are both “freestanding” and “built-in” models available.

But… Does the configuration you choose really matter?

Built-in appliances tend to sport a bigger price tag… And it may be tempting to simply use your trusty old freestanding grill in your new kitchen design.

But the truth is… Freestanding vs built in appliances are definitely NOT interchangeable.

freestanding vs built in featured image

And at the heart of this distinction lies a critical issue: Your safety.

After years of working in the outdoor living industry… We’ve heard countless harrowing tales of homeowners who’ve used freestanding appliances in place of built-in models in their outdoor kitchens.

So in this article, we’ll be shining a spotlight on those safety concerns… And sharing why bona fide built-in appliances are always the best choice for your BBQ island.

Ready to jump in?

Quick Links:

Freestanding And Built-In Appliances At A Glance

To get things going, let’s expand on what we mean by “freestanding” and “built-in” appliances.

In simple terms, freestanding appliances are designed to stand independently… Typically on a cart, casters, or legs. They’re not intended for installation in an outdoor kitchen.

On the other hand, built-in appliances are specifically meant to be installed in an outdoor kitchen structure, for a seamless and integrated look.

While this difference may be straightforward enough… What’s not as clear cut is understanding why it really matters, and more importantly, what it means for your safety.

That’s why today, we’ll be doubling down on the potential hazards of using freestanding appliances in your outdoor kitchen design.

Want to bring your idea to life?

Use our free 3D design tool to bring the outdoor kitchen of your dreams to reality in just a few minutes.

A Colossal Safety Concern: Blocked Ventilation

So… What exactly is unsafe about using freestanding appliances in an outdoor kitchen?

Well, it mainly has to do with ventilation.

Certain types of appliances — freestanding and built-in alike — require access to airflow to function properly.

For instance, grills have vents which allow heat and gas to dissipate… And outdoor refrigerators rely on vents to maintain safe internal temperatures.

But here’s the key issue: Built-in and freestanding appliances don’t adhere to the same ventilation regulations… And not taking heed of this difference can lead to some significant safety risks.

Allow us to paint a clearer picture for you… Starting with freestanding vs. built-in grills.

Safety Hazards Of Blocked Grill Vents

While ventilation varies on a grill by grill basis… Most freestanding and built-in grills alike vent out from the rear below the top of the hood.

Though vent location may be similar for both configurations… There are some crucial differences in design.

Built-in grills are designed specifically to be placed in enclosed structures.

Additionally, they’ll come with clear installation instructions to ensure their vents remain unobstructed.

On the other hand, freestanding grills are not designed for built-in use… And therefore won’t come with manufacturer-approved installation instructions.

When attempting to build a freestanding grill into an outdoor kitchen… The difference in design coupled with a lack of professional instruction often results in blocked grill vents.

And when grill vents are obstructed… It’s not good news.

To show you what we mean… Let’s run through the potential safety hazards.

Blocked Grill Vents Can Cause Accidental Burns

hot grill knobs

Excess heat inside grills must have a way to escape, otherwise, your outdoor cooking setup may quickly become host to safety concerns… One such being accidental burns.

When ventilation is blocked… Heat will continue to build up in the unit, causing the grill’s exterior controls and handles to become piping hot.

Of course, if your grill’s exterior is blistering hot, this significantly increases the risk of your hands getting scorched.

But, that’s not the only thing at stake…

Blocked Grill Vents Can Cause A Fire

grill catching fire due to poor ventilation

In addition to the risk of burns… Extreme heat buildup in your grill threatens even graver safety hazards.

When excessive heat has nowhere to vent out, it can go so far as to spark a fire in your grill… Which may then spread to your kitchen island and nearby structures. (This danger is heightened if your BBQ island is constructed with combustible materials!)

Not only can this lead to substantial property damage… But it also poses a significant threat to your family’s safety.

Blocked Grill Vents Can Damage Electrical Components

Now, onto a final hazard of excessive heat buildup…

Many grills feature electrical add-ons, like lighting or rotisserie… And pellet grills rely heavily on electronic components to operate.

It goes without saying… But extreme heat buildup and electrical components don’t pair well.

Wires can overheat, melt, and malfunction… Causing serious damage to your grill.

And as for personal safety hazards… The risk of electrical fires is greatly increased.

Again, if your outdoor kitchen is constructed with combustible materials… The severity of the fire can quickly spiral out of control.

But even with non-combustible materials… This isn’t a risk you’ll want to take.

Blocked Grill Vents Can Cause Explosions

an image of an outdoor kitchen that caught fire due to poor ventilation

When it comes to gas grills, specifically… You should never adapt your old freestanding model for built-in use.

If you do… You’ll be facing an exceptionally dire consequence.

Just as blocked vents trap in heat… They can also confine potential gas leaks.

And if gas in your grill doesn’t have an escape route… Immense pressure will accumulate inside the appliance.

The greater the pressure… The higher the chance of a fiery explosion putting you, your family, and your property at risk.

All in all, the key message here is: Just opt for a genuine built-in grill.

They are specially designed for use in outdoor kitchens, will be able to effectively vent out heat and gas buildup, and will alleviate the above safety concerns.

On the contrary, building a freestanding grill into an enclosed structure is hardly worth gambling your safety.

But, grills aren’t the only type of appliance that rely on ventilation to operate…

Safety Hazard Of Blocked Refrigerator Vents

freestanding outdoor refrigerator next to grill cart
Freestanding Refrigerator
Built In Refrigerator Vents

As with standalone grills… Freestanding outdoor refrigeration should never be swapped out for genuine built-in units.

Generally, freestanding outdoor refrigerators feature vents on the sides or back of the unit… While built-in refrigerators will have vents on the bottom front.

If you were to build a freestanding refrigerator into an outdoor kitchen structure… You’d be completely blocking the vents.

And if a refrigerator doesn’t have access to airflow, the unit won’t be able to stay reliably cool.

Though a freestanding fridge likely won’t overheat enough to spark a fire in your kitchen island… Blocked vents still don’t bode well for your personal wellbeing.

If your fridge is unable to maintain consistently lower temps… The food stored in the unit may spoil.

To be exact, any temperature over 40 degrees can cause food to spoil… Particularly raw poultry, red meat, or seafood.

And if you’re unaware that your fridge is malfunctioning… You may wind up with a nasty case of foodborne illness.

Safety hazards aside, outdoor refrigerators aren’t cheap. Building a freestanding model into your outdoor kitchen will prevent it from properly serving its intended purpose, making it nothing short of a waste of money.

So, the general consensus? Don’t put your personal wellbeing at risk by building a freestanding fridge into your outdoor kitchen.

outdoor rated refrigerator door open to show insulation of coyote fridge with access doors and built-in grill visible as well

Instead, opt for a built-in unit with front vents… To ensure your refrigerator is able to function properly, and hold food-safe temps at all times.

DIY Can Be Dangerous: Safety Hazards Of Improper Appliance Conversion

So far, we’ve hashed out the safety hazards of blocked vents.

However, those aren’t the sole risks that come from using freestanding appliances in your grill station.

If you’re not already fully on board the built-in bandwagon, here are additional safety hazards that you may face when converting a freestanding appliance.

Modifying Freestanding Appliances Can Cause Personal Injury

To adapt a freestanding grill for built-in use… There’s a good chance that some modification will need to take place.

More specifically, you might want to detach the grill head from its base to achieve a more integrated look.

Now, this process isn’t always overly difficult. In many cases, freestanding grill heads can simply be unscrewed from their cart or base.

But don’t take this simplicity as an invitation to convert your freestanding grill.

Unless your appliance manufacturer has clearly stated that the model can be converted to built-in… You shouldn’t attempt to do so, for the reasons we discussed above. (You may also risk voiding your warranty!)

Now, other freestanding grill models won’t be as easy to disassemble.

For many models, you may literally have to cut through metal to remove the base from the grill head.

And unless you’re a professional metal-worker… This won’t be an easy feat.

You’ll need special tools and a high skill cap… And even a small misstep can cause severe personal injury.

You could cut yourself on sharp metal edges, sharp blades, or metal shrapnel could lodge itself in your eyes or skin.

Not to mention, you may unintentionally remove or damage essential pieces of the unit… Which can in turn make the grill unsafe to use.

All in all, it’s not a great idea… And if that much effort is required, it’s safe to say your appliance was never meant to be converted in the first place.

Now, what else could possibly go wrong?

Improperly Installed Appliances Will Be Structurally Unstable

island collapse

If a grill head isn’t specifically designed for built-in use… Unstable installation is another cause for concern.

It’s crucial that your grill is installed securely in your outdoor kitchen structure, without blocking any vents.

And when attempting to build in a freestanding model, it can be hard to pull this off.

True built-in grills sit in a designated cutout on a grill island… Come with flanges that allow for firm seating… And their full-depth is securely held in the kitchen’s structure, without blocking airflow.

This means the grill is safe to use, with little to no risk of the unit toppling through or off your kitchen design.

Now, when you install a grill head that’s not intended for built-in use… Structural stability isn’t a guarantee.

Your grill risks falling off or through your kitchen’s countertops, causing damage to your island, and opening up the possibility for yet more safety concerns.

Tumbling grills may crush your toes, pets, or small children in the area.

And if it takes a spill while powered on… The severity of this hazard is only heightened, bringing burn risks and fire hazards into the mix.

The moral of the story is… Don’t try to convert freestanding grills for built-in use, under any circumstance.

Sticking to genuine built-in models will ensure your grill is properly supported, has adequate airflow, and won’t pose any structural safety hazards.

And when it’s your safety at stake… Why take any chances?

Texans have long enjoyed the art of low-and-slow cooking brisket, sausages, and ribs over mesquite, hickory, oak, and pecan wood… Achieving oh-so-tender, melt-off-the-bone goodness.

But while traditional Texas BBQ saw meats cooked over wood-fueled fire pits… Today, those authentic flavors can be achieved with a built-in pellet smoker.

Pellet grills are able to hold consistently low temperatures over extended periods of time… Plus, they can be paired with your favorite mesquite, hickory, oak, or pecan-flavored wood pellets.

And the best part? They’re remarkably easy to use.

Most models can get going with just the press of a button. (So all you have to do is enjoy your food when it’s done!)

Oh, and did we mention that pellet grills have convection oven-like capabilities? Even, top-to-bottom heating opens the door beyond traditional BBQ… Allowing you to whip up delicacies like wood smoked pecan pie or Texas-style peach cobbler.

Never Lose Sight Of Your Favorite Spice Blends

Texas is a melting pot of many culinary traditions… And as a result, the state’s cuisine is not adverse to diverse spice blends.

So as a Texan… There’s a good chance you don’t shy away from spicy, well-seasoned foods. (That is, unless you live in central Texas, where a simple salt and pepper dry rub reigns supreme.)

To better embrace those flavorsome medleys… Why not include a pull-out spice rack in your outdoor kitchen design?

You’ll always have your go-to’s within reach… Making cooking al fresco that much easier.

Whip Up Sweet & Tangy Texas BBQ Sauce With A Side Burner

From Eastern to Southern Texas… It’s no secret that y’all like your smoked meats smothered in sauce.

And whether you’re after the tangy tomato BBQ sauce of east Texas…

Or that sweet molasses-based BBQ from the south…

Including a side burner in your Texas outdoor kitchen design will make whipping up your favorite sauces simple… Without ever leaving the comfort of your summer kitchen.

Welcome West Texas Tradition With A Built-In Gas Grill

When it comes to the Texas BBQ scene… West Texas is in a league of its own.

This region embraces quick, direct heat grilling over an open flame… A feat best achieved with a tried and tested built-in gas grill.

While wood-smoked flavors aren’t quite as robust, here… Don’t be fooled. They’re still a staple.

Specifically, west Texas BBQ showcases hints of mesquite wood… Which can be added with the help of a smoker box accessory on your grill grates.

Keep Fresh Beers On Tap With A Kegerator

It may not be BBQ… But if there’s one thing Texans love almost as much as wood-smoked meats, it’s beer.

And luckily, you don’t have to go without at your outdoor kitchen!

Including a kegerator in your design will ensure that cold, fresh brews are always on tap.

But why stop there?

Throw in an ice maker, sink, faucet, and full bar island along with your kegerator… And you’ve got yourself full-on bar functionality right in your own backyard.

Overcome Climate Curveballs With The Right Outdoor Kitchen Materials

Now that we’ve covered a few Texas outdoor kitchen ideas… The next step is accounting for your climate.

This’ll give you an idea of what materials to use in your backyard kitchen (and which to steer clear of).

But since we’re dealing with a whopping 268,596 square miles… It’s safe to say that not every corner of Texas is host to the same climate conditions.

The bulk of the state can be characterized as humid subtropical… With scorching summer temperatures, high humidity, mild winters, and frequent rainfall in certain regions.

Western locales experience arid conditions… With searing daytime degrees, and occasional extreme temperature dips come sundown.

North Texas is also no stranger to dramatic temperature fluctuation. There’s extreme heat in the summertime… And come winter, you’ll want to break out the heaters.

But whether you’re struggling with stifling humidity, bouts of rainfall, or drastic temperature drops… There are a few “Dos” and “Don’ts” to successfully counteract these climate challenges.

Don’t: Wooden Outdoor Kitchens

Can you frame an outdoor kitchen with wood? Wood concerns as a material

Texas or elsewhere… Wooden outdoor kitchens are always a poor choice.

With near-constant humidity throughout the state’s subtropical regions, decay is inevitable.

Within just 1-6 months… Wood exposed to high levels of humidity will start rotting, leaving your kitchen’s structure in shambles.

And even in Texas’s dry and arid regions… You should give wooden outdoor kitchens a wide berth.

Though exposure to moisture may be minimal… The blistering Texas heat inflicts its own damage: thermal expansion. In as little as 1-3 years, wood exposed to consistently high temperatures can warp, swell, and shrink.

But wait… There’s more.

Even if the heat and humidity don’t get to your kitchen… The pests will. Texas has the highest concentration of termites in the country!

Let’s just say you won’t be the only one enjoying a meal at a wooden outdoor kitchen.

And there’s one final blow… Safety.

We all know that wood and heat are a terrible match-up.

The combustible nature of wood coupled with the intense heat from your outdoor grill and other appliances could quickly lead to catastrophe… And the last thing you’d want to do is invite a safety hazard to your home.

But, we digress.

What else can’t hold a candle to the Texas climate?

Don’t: Metal Outdoor Kitchen Frames

metal frame for outdoor kitchen disadvantages falling apart after a few winters

In Texas, metal outdoor kitchen frames should be kept at an arm’s length… And here’s why.

Again, humidity and rainfall are the major culprits.

Constant exposure to moisture invites rust and corrosion to gnaw away at a metal frame… And if you’re living on Texas’s Gulf Coast, the salty air will only expedite the rusting process.

For those shielded from humidity in Texas’s arid regions… You may be wondering if you can get away with a metal frame.

But lo and behold… Excessive dryness poses its own set of challenges.

Come springtime, dry air from the Rockies flows down to Texas’s northern regions… Allowing “temperatures to warm up quickly during the day, and cool down very quickly at night.” (According to a report from the Fort Worth Star Telegram.)

This can result in substantial temperature fluctuations of 50 degrees or more… Meaning “temperatures could be in the 30s when residents leave for work in the morning, and warm up into the 90s by the time they return home that afternoon.”

Typically, metal-framed outdoor kitchens are finished with a cement board and exterior veneer (such as stonework, stucco, or brick)… And this is where the problem lies.

Cement boards are no match for these extreme temperature swings!

They’ll frequently expand and contract, which can cause pieces of your kitchen’s exterior finish to crack or fall off… And force you to spend time and energy maintaining your grill island. (What a headache!)

Do: Opt For An Island Structure As Sturdy As Concrete (Literally!)

Ready to assemble vs ready to finish outdoor kitchen frame options

It’s clear that metal and wood are out of the question…

So, how can you construct an outdoor kitchen that defies the elements?

For those in humid subtropical zones, where moisture can be a menace…

Those on the Gulf combatting the coastal air…

And everyone up north dealing with extreme temperature swings…

There’s one material that’s well suited to tackle the crazy Texas climate, year-round… And that’s concrete.

It won’t rot, rust, swell, or corrode… In fact, it isn’t really affected by moisture at all!

Plus, concrete is non-combustible… Helping to keep your outdoor living space secure.

Now, it’s worth pointing out that not all concrete is cut from the same mold.

Similar to cement boards, certain types of concrete will be susceptible to cracking when exposed to sudden temperature fluctuations… And as part of its natural curing process, concrete will develop hairline cracks over time.

For these reasons, choosing high-performance, engineered concrete composite is key! This will have improved resistance against cracking, and will endure for a lifetime. (It’s what we use for our own RTA Outdoor Kitchen panels!)

Do: Include Long-Lasting Countertops

Outdoor bar place settings for dinner

Next, it’s time to consider the best countertop materials.

Now, why fix what isn’t broken? Just as high-performance concrete composite is a great choice for your kitchen’s structure… It’s also a sturdy solution for topping off your grill island.

With durability, heat resistance, and unwavering toughness… You really can’t go wrong.

Yet, you may be after something with a bit more visual interest for your outdoor entertainment space… In which case, a simple concrete countertop may not cut it.

Enter granite… Another solid choice for your outdoor kitchen Texas!

It’s heat, chip, stain, and scratch resistant… And will introduce an upscale look to your outdoor kitchen space.

Do: Select The Right Stainless Steel Appliances

straight rta island with built in outdoor appliances

Now, let’s turn our attention to the lifeblood of your grill island… The appliances.

It’s important that the accessories you choose have what it takes to hold up to the Texas weather.

And while you might think you’re set with stainless steel componentsThere’s more to the story.

Not every type of stainless steel is cut out to endure harsh weather conditions. Grades 201 and 430 stainless steel in particular are often used for outdoor appliances… But will quickly rust, corrode, and tarnish when left outside.

To avoid the hassle of replacing worn out appliances (trust us, this isn’t a fun task!)… It’s crucial to invest in high-quality, 304 stainless steel options from the start.

304 stainless steel stands firm against rust and corrosion, regardless of your climate… Ensuring your appliances stay in their prime (and continue to shine) for years to come.

Outdoor Kitchen Contractors In Texas (Are They Really The Best Choice?)

Now that you’re ready to tackle the Texas climate… Who’s going to turn your vision into a reality?

If you’re after a custom design Hiring an outdoor kitchen contractor may seem like the obvious choice.

The good news is, finding local outdoor kitchen builders in Texas shouldn’t be a challenge, no matter where you’re residing.

But though they may be easy to find… That doesn’t automatically mean they’re well suited for the job.

When considering a contractor to build your outdoor kitchen… There are a few critical factors to keep in mind…

Are They A Specialist Or A Generalist?

What is an outdoor kitchen frame

When considering an outdoor kitchen contractor, the first question you should ask yourself is: Do they specialize solely in outdoor kitchen construction, or do they offer a broad spectrum of outdoor living services?

Many contractors have generalized experience with a range of outdoor living services… And their area of expertise is rarely on outdoor kitchens alone.

While this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it does mean that crucial details may be overlooked.

They may also be tied up in multiple other projects… And if yours isn’t a high priority, it could quickly turn it into a weeks- or even months-long affair.

Can You Pin Down Positive Reviews?

Next, you should be on the lookout for plenty of positive reviews.

High ratings often indicate both superior craftsmanship and good customer service… Which is what you’re after!

But even if they’re all positive… They also need to speak to outdoor kitchens, specifically.

Reviews of swimming pools, covered patios, or pergolas won’t reveal much about their skill with outdoor kitchen construction!

Do They Have A Portfolio Of Past Work?

Should you diy an outdoor kitchen bar project built from scratch out of wood

An extensive portfolio or photo gallery showcasing past outdoor kitchen projects is always a plus. (And bonus points if they have a showroom to visit!)

These resources will give you an idea of their project history, design preferences, and their ability to execute your ideal kitchen island.

Is Their Build Method Made Clear?

Before signing any contracts… It’s important for your outdoor kitchen contractor to clearly specify their build method, as well as the materials they’ll be using for the island structure and countertops.

A lack of detailed information may imply a lack of experience or attempt to cut corners… Which would leave us with a sour taste in our mouth.

Are Appliances And Accessories Addressed?

While some outdoor kitchen contractors will source appliances and accessories for you… This isn’t always the case.

If you don’t want to be stuck researching and sourcing your own (or ending up with lower-end options that aren’t ideal for you)… It’s crucial to confirm whether or not your contractor has accounted for appliances and accessories before making any commitments.

Is Outdoor Kitchen Safety A Priority?

outdoor kitchen vents & Ventilation information

Your safety is no joke… And the builder you hire should take it seriously.

They should know to follow standard safety regulations, always use non-combustible materials, and incorporate proper ventilation…

And you should never have to remind them to do so.

In our eyes, these are the bare minimum requirements a quality outdoor kitchen builder should meet… And we’d never suggest settling for less.

But before you start searching for a contractor who checks all these boxes… Here’s a word of caution.

Over the past few months, our team has conducted thorough research on outdoor kitchen contractors in Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, and Austin… And we’ve yet to find even one builder who fits all of the above criteria.

That’s not to say there are no good outdoor kitchen contractors in Texas!

We’re merely suggesting that finding the perfect one can quickly turn into quite the daunting task.

And honestly, life is busy. Finding time to vet local contractors can be downright impossible.

So, where does that leave you?

Outdoor Kitchen Texas Showcase: High Praise From Happy Homeowners

customer outdoor kitchen in texas

Ray and Christie are two happy RTA customers living in the Southeastern Texas Gulf Coast.

Their outdoor living area boasts a stunning covered RTA kitchen and bar island with a stylish stacked stone finish and granite countertops… With cabinetry, a built-in pellet grill, and a power burner from Coyote Outdoor Living.

They love using their grill island year round to host friends and family.

But… What did their road to their perfect outdoor kitchen entail?

Before diving in, they knew their outdoor kitchen needed to hold up to the Texas weather. Wood was out of the question… And they needed components that would stay corrosion-free.

So, Ray and Christie set out to hire a local Texas contractor… But the contractor’s sky-high bid left them less than pleased.

Deciding to take the project into their own hands, Ray and Christie’s online research brought them face to face with RTA.

Our composite concrete panels and Coyote’s 304 stainless steel components caught their attention… And the rest is history.

Ray and Christie worked with one of our Design Experts to craft a custom island that would maximize their space… And when their custom kitchen arrived at their door, they took on installation themselves.

Ray remarks on installation, saying: “The assembly was simple, any questions I had were answered by your support staff quickly.”

(Note: Not a fan of DIY projects? We also have a Pro-Installer Network to do the installation for you!)

From beginning to end, RTA allowed Ray and Christie to take the project into their own hands, for a third of the cost of a local contractor.

And the end result is a beautiful, functional grill island that can be used year round, and for years to come.
