You’re in the middle of figuring out how to build a BBQ island… And you’re seeing talk of insulated grill jackets.

Sometimes they’re used… And sometimes they’re not.

What gives? How are you supposed to know if you need one or not?

You want to be sure you’re planning properly… But the information out there is muddy at best.

We’re here to clean off the grime… And leave you with crystal clear nuggets of information to glean from as you plan.

Point is, we’re going to discuss everything you need to know about an insulated grill jacket… And so, so much more.

In fact, we’ve completed independent research on several grill jacket brands for one of our own outdoor kitchen lines. Needless to say… We’ve learned a lot about what makes these little jackets tick.

Without further ado, let’s dive in.

The What and Why of an insulated Grill Jacket

Ward Schraeder installing a grill jacket into a MOKS outdoor kitchen

So what’s a grill jacket… And why do you need to use one?

Let’s start with what.

Insulated grill jackets are metal sleeves designed for your built-in grill to sit into.

Pretty simple.

Why do they exist?

Depending on the way your outdoor kitchen is constructed (we’ll get to that)… An insulated jacket is designed to protect your island from damage or a potential fire.

This is because certain outdoor kitchen materials are combustible… And if they’re not protected, the unencumbered heat from a grill could easily set your island ablaze.

All in all, insulated jackets are simply used as a protective measure. They don’t add functionality or aesthetic value… It’s just down to safety.

With that said… What about the types?

Want to bring your idea to life?

Types of Grill Jackets

Another thing you’ll have to be aware of are the types of grill jackets out there.

And while they’re not fully defined… These accessories are typically only designed in one of two ways.

So thankfully, it’s not much to keep track of.

That said.. It’s important to be aware of this and the differences in how they function.

Non-Vented Grill Jackets

Viking 5 Series insulated jacket

If you’ve looked into grill jackets at all… These are probably the ones that you’ve seen.

Generally speaking… These are dual-walled steel structures that fully enclose the back, sides, and bottom of the grill head.

The only openings will be a small cutout for hooking up gas and/or electric.

Ultimately, these non-vented insulated jackets are simply designed to form a complete barrier around the grill.

Which means your built-in grill won’t be directly touching any combustible materials. That’s great.

However… There are situations in which this might not be ideal.

Why?

Well, there’s no ventilation built into these grill jackets.

So this means that your insulated grill jacket is just absorbing heat from your grill… And it doesn’t really have anywhere to go.

Which means in some scenarios… It is possible that your surrounding island structure could get hot enough to be in the danger zone.

It’s for this reason that we prefer the use of vented grill jackets, where possible.

Vented Grill Jackets

Although less common… It’s our preference to see insulated grill jackets that are vented.

Coyote Outdoor Living’s grill jackets are the perfect example of this.

They’re actually technically not insulated, because they are constructed with a single layer of 304 stainless steel.

However, they do have ample ventilation on the sides and back of the unit.

This is a great solution… Because the heat dissipating from your grill isn’t accumulating in a single area.

It’s allowed to freely vent into the cavity of your island… And as long as your island is ventilated properly, that heat will be able to fully exit your structure.

So it’s easy to see why this setup is our preference.

The more airflow you can encourage for heat dissipation… The better.

Now, let’s get clear on when a grill jacket is necessary.

When a Grill Jacket is Necessary

Thankfully, this point is pretty simple. There’s only one situation in which the use of a grill jacket is absolutely necessary.

If your outdoor kitchen is made with combustible materials.

Wood, PVC, composite decking, and HDPE are prime examples of combustible materials. If they reach a high enough temperature… They’ll combust and start a fire.

Composite decking in particular can begin to soften at temperatures as low as 176°F… And wood isn’t much better.

As a Los Angeles Times article put it, “Wood normally begins to burn at about 400 degrees to 600 degrees F. However, when it’s continually exposed to temperatures between 150 degrees and 250 degrees F., its ignition temperature can become as low as 200 degrees F.”

Think about this for a second.

Most gas grills will cap out at temperatures of 500°F, charcoal grills can reach temps of 700°F and some high-performance models can exceed scorching temps of 1,000°F.

And if you’re grilling on a regular basis… That consistent high heat exposure is causing the wood in your island to become more dry and brittle. (And thus, far more easily combustible, like kindling.)

So for this reason, if you’re using combustible materials in your outdoor kitchen… Skipping the use of a grill jacket could prove to be a perilous mistake.

But is the answer really as simple as buying a grill jacket?

We’d like to think there’s more to contemplate here.

They aren’t the End-All-be-All

While it might seem like an open and shut case… We’re more of the mind that an insulated grill jacket is really just a band aid solution, covering up an underlying problem.

As we mentioned right at the beginning of this article… We’ve completed our own independent testing of grill jackets in a combustible outdoor kitchen.

These points in particular are a reflection of our findings.

You Lose Interior Island Space

Let’s begin with the most minor effect of a grill jacket. While this isn’t necessarily a problem, per se… It can prove to be a challenge as you’re planning an outdoor kitchen.

Obviously, an insulated grill jacket will take up space. That’s no surprise to anyone.

But that can prove to become a major annoyance as you’re designing your outdoor kitchen layout.

Why?

Well… This added footprint of a grill jacket may prevent you from installing other appliances you want.

Certain doors and drawers may no longer fit underneath your grill… And it might force you to push other appliances further away, such as a refrigerator.

All in all, this doesn’t have to be a complete deal-breaker. But if you only have the space for a small outdoor kitchen… The lack of accessibility can become a significant barrier for you.

It Doesn’t Reduce Clearance to Nearby Combustibles

fire catches on pergola

Here’s an insulated grill jacket myth for you.

When buying a grill insulated jacket for your outdoor kitchen… Many homeowners mistakenly believe that they can now place their island closer to other combustible structures.

Examples of this would be a wooden privacy screen, near the exterior wall of your home, wooden pergola, or other overhead structure.

Unfortunately, this misconception couldn’t be further from the truth.

An insulated grill jacket only offers protection for the countertops and below. Anything above it will need separate consideration for protection.

So if you were hoping to cram an island into a smaller space because you have an insulated grill jacket… Or you wanted to avoid paying extra for installing a backsplash or overhead vent hood… Your hopes certainly are dashed here.

There’s no other way to put it. There’s no shortcuts when it comes to proper safety.

Even if you install a grill jacket into your outdoor kitchen… You still want to follow recommended setback guidelines from your appliance manufacturer. (And install backsplashes and/or vent hoods when suggested.)

We’ll leave you with this. Your BBQ island needs to breathe!

You Still Need Island Ventilation

Top down view of island cross ventilation

On the topic of “breathing”… There’s another requirement that an insulated jacket doesn’t save you from.

Island ventilation.

Sad to say, this is the most overlooked portion of an outdoor kitchen project… And it’s an oversight with potential for dangerous consequences.

Let’s step back for a moment.

You’re now aware that an insulated grill jacket provides a physical barrier around your grill… Thereby protecting the combustible materials in your island.

That’s all fine and good.

But when your grill is running full blast… It’s producing a ton of heat. And that heat needs somewhere to go. (Even in the case of a vented grill jacket.)

Left unchecked, it’s possible that the interior of your island could get hot enough to combust anyway… Even with that physical barrier in place.

Point is, your insulated grill jacket simply cannot function properly if the island itself isn’t being ventilated.

So it is of utmost importance that you work with an outdoor kitchen builder who understands island ventilation requirements… Or select a solution that’s already thought this through.

You Can’t Mix-and-Match Brands

Sometimes, homeowners try to get clever.

Insulated grill jackets all look pretty much the same… But the price for them varies widely.

So if you sprung for a more expensive grill brand… Why not buy a cheaper grill jacket from another brand to save some money?

We can see why you’d be thinking along those lines.

Unfortunately… This should never be done!

Whether it’s Summerset, Hestan, DCS, Fire Magic, Lynx, Coyote, Alfresco, or Blaze grills… Attempting to mix and match brands for your grill jacket is an absolute no-no.

The reason for this is simple.

Every brand of built-in gas grills will have slightly different requirements. And every brand designs their grill jackets for their specific grill line.

Take Coyote, for example. Their insulated grill jackets are designed with ventilation on most sides. This is because their outdoor grills need that ventilation to operate safely.

So if you decide to plop a 36 inch gas grill from Coyote into a Blaze grill jacket of the same size (with no ventilation)… You’re setting yourself up for disaster.

Point is, built-in grills and their respective insulated jackets are inseparable. (It’s not a racket to get more money out of you!)

And speaking of money…

They don’t Save You Money

budgeting to save money on outdoor kitchen

This might seem like a hot take… But when you run the numbers, it’s really not.

If you cast aside all the safety reasons why wood is a poor material choice for an outdoor kitchen… Many homeowners still feel that the savings they’ll get from choosing wood is a benefit that outweighs any other consideration.

But even if you throw caution to the wind and build an outdoor kitchen with wood… When you add in an insulated grill jacket, are you really saving money?

A single grill jacket alone will run you several hundred dollars.

For some perspective… Coyote’s insulated jacket for their 36” grill will run you $769.00.

That’s no small sum!

But that’s just the beginning.

If you have any other cooking appliances in your grill island… Every single one will need their own grill jacket as well.

That includes griddles, power burners, double side burners, pellet grillsYou get the idea.

The more you have, the more you pay. And if you’ve got several cooking appliances in your layout… That’s easily a several thousand dollar expenditure you weren’t originally planning for.

And at that point… Wouldn’t it just make more sense to pony up the cash for a better solution?

You Might As Well Pursue a Safer Option

Alternative to outdoor cabinets with a Rustic outdoor kitchen idea you can make with the rta design tool

And herein lies the true problem underpinning this whole insulated grill jacket debacle.

There’s so much extra time, fuss, money, and risk involved with building an outdoor kitchen that requires grill jackets… And it gets to a point where simplifying the process becomes the most logical answer.

Especially when you consider that there’s no real downsides.

What are we trying to get at here?

Since it’s clear you care about building a safe outdoor kitchen… You might as well avoid the runaround and go straight for a solution without the confusion.

An outdoor kitchen that’s completely made with non-combustible materials…

An outdoor kitchen that doesn’t require grill jackets at all…

And an outdoor kitchen that’s designed with safety in mind from the get-go.

That way, you don’t even need to get distracted or confused by the concept of grill jackets.

You can know for certain that your outdoor kitchen isn’t prone to combustion… And to us, that peace of mind is worth so much more than trying to save a few pennies.

But does this elusive outdoor kitchen solution even exist?

Well…

Skip the Insulated Jacket for Grill, Without the Risk

With RTA Outdoor Living, you can truly have your cake and eat it too.

We won’t rehash all the points you just read… But it’s clear this is the outdoor kitchen solution you’re looking for.

Why?

First and foremost, RTA islands are constructed with high performance concrete. Not only is this concrete rated for 100 years… It is 100% non-combustible.

Hence… Fully eliminating your need for a grill jacket from a safety perspective.

Yes, it’s true that concrete is more costly than wood.

But you won’t be spending hundreds or of dollars for a wood BBQ island that’s not built to last… And will need to be replaced in a few years anyway. (Aside from combustibility, wood is susceptible to warping, rotting, swelling, and termite damage.)

So while upfront costs are likely to even out… RTA wins out on sheer longevity. (No repair or replacement headaches here!)

And while it’s clear that an RTA outdoor kitchen saves you the grief of having to fret about grill jackets… We also remove the anxieties of other safety considerations.

Take island ventilation, for example.

As you know… An insulated grill jacket will be rendered useless if that heat can’t be properly flushed out of your island.

And it’s for this reason that we go nuts on ensuring our islands have adequate ventilation. In fact, every RTA island has ventilation in 7 unique locations.

So rest assured… Your custom outdoor kitchen will remain cool, calm, and collected. (And so will you!)

FAQ

A built in grill insulated jacket is necessary if your outdoor kitchen is constructed with combustible materials. Examples of this are wood, PVC, and HDPE.

A grill insulated jacket is an accessory designed for built-in grills. If your outdoor kitchen is made from combustible materials such as wood… The grill insulation jacket is designed to protect your island from combustion by providing a barrier between the grill and island materials.

In truth, there isn’t a “best” insulated jacket for built in grill. Each outdoor grill insulated jacket is specifically designed for the grill brand it comes from. So there’s no safe way to mix-and-match grills and insulated jackets from different brands. To rephrase another way… The best insulated jacket for gas grill is the one that matches the brand of your built in grill!

An insulated jacket for outdoor grill works in a couple ways. Primarily, it works by providing a direct barrier… Providing protection for combustible materials inside your outdoor kitchen. Some insulated jackets are designed with vents, thereby providing ventilation for the heat as well.

A Deep Dive On Outdoor Pool Bars

We know you’re on the edge of your seat to see some outdoor pool bar ideas…

But before we get in over our heads, we need to set a baseline.

What is an outdoor pool bar?

Put simply, it’s an all-in-one patio bar and swimming pool setup.

Now, don’t be fooled.

A pool bar is more than just a spot to serve liquid refreshments and snacks by the water’s edge.

It’s a focal point for friends and family to gather… A perfect addition to your backyard parties… And a great way to keep guests from trekking water into your home each time they want to top off their drinks.

What Bar Type Is Best For Your Backyard Oasis?

Adding an outdoor pool bar to your backyard is beyond exhilarating.

But no matter how eager you are to get started, it’s not a project that you can just go into blind.

First (and most importantly), you’ll need to decide which type of outdoor bar and pool setup complements your style.

To get the gears turning… Keep the following questions in mind as we go through all of the different outdoor pool bar options:

 • What purpose will your outdoor pool bar fulfill? Will it be for food/drink prep, seating, or something else entirely?
 • What’s your outdoor pool bar budget?
 • How much time and effort are you willing to put into this project?

Your answers to these will help guide your final decision… So with all that said, let’s take a look at three top choices.

Patio Bar Cart

Placing an outdoor bar cart beside your pool is by far the simplest (and cheapest) method.

There’s no landscaping, expensive upgrades, or serious planning involved… Making this an ultimate DIY outdoor pool bar solution. (Assuming your pool and patio are already built, that is.)

Backyard bar carts come ready-made in all shapes, sizes, and styles.

They’re lightweight and easy to move around your patio…

And depending on your needs… These bar tables can serve a variety of functions.

Drink-making stations, storage carts, and bar carts with fridges are all in the cards… Along with many other unique offerings.

Now, we already have an abundance of content on backyard bar tables… So don’t be surprised by the lack of bar carts in our “ideas” section further down the page!

But nevertheless, homeowners who want to make a splash in a smaller space or on a tighter budget should take note.

Patio Bar Cart Pointers

Before we move on, we’d like to make a few important points on backyard bar carts.

We’ve spent hours researching and writing articles on ready-made outdoor bar tables…

And there’s a major alarm bell for this method that we need to sound.

Your bar cart needs to be built for the outdoors!

Being outside, it’s already highly likely that it’s going to get wet…

And proximity to a pool pretty much seals the deal.

The solution? You need a bar cart that won’t sustain water damage.

This puts wood out of the running. We know, teak and acacia are stunning… But you’ll be counting your losses once these start to rot and warp.

Metal is out, too… Unless you can find a bar table that’s constructed with 304 stainless steel. (This won’t rust and corrode easily — even if it gets wet!)

On the flip side, recycled plastic or synthetic wicker are better materials for your poolside bar cart — Offering great weather-resistance and long-lasting durability.

But if you simply want more from your outdoor pool bar… Read on.

Streamlined Swim-Up Bar

You may have scoped out a swim-up bar on your last vacation… But did you know that more and more homeowners are including this luxury piece in their own backyard designs?

For those who aren’t familiar… A swim-up pool bar is an integrated swimming pool feature that allows swimmers to sit and enjoy a drink or snack, without having to leave the water.

How does this work?

On one side of the pool, bar stools are submerged in shallow water.

Usually, these seats are permanently integrated into the swimming pool floor during construction.

A flat bar top area is located in front of these stools at the very edge of the pool. This is what pool designers call the “dry side…” where drinks are served to guests sitting in the water.

Now, a swim-up bar doesn’t have to be just a simple drink-serving setup.

Many homeowners include expansive outdoor living rooms, outdoor kitchens, and cabanas on the “dry side” of their swim-up pool bar to provide the utmost comfort, convenience, and entertainment to guests both in and out of the water.

If you think life is better in the pool… This type of outdoor bar for pool probably sounds pretty darn appealing.

But before you take the plunge with a swim-up bar… What should you know?

The Skinny On Swim-Up Bars

swim up circular pool bar

A swim-up bar provides convenience and entertainment…

And a permanent setup can even increase property resale value.

But the road to this backyard design feature is far from easy.

If you’re looking into a permanent swim-up bar setup with integrated stools… Here are some common stumbling blocks:

 • If you already have an existing pool and patio, you’ll have to undergo extensive renovations to add built-in bar stools and a poolside countertop.
 • Permanent swim-up bars are a custom feature typically only available with concrete inground pools… And concrete is the most expensive pool material to work with. (Concrete pools also take the longest time to build.)

Without getting too “in the weeds” on this, expect to pay a pretty penny to get those beautiful built-in bar stools and poolside bar top…

Plus, more time and money on any other features you wish to include on the “dry side” of your swim-up pool bar. (Like a custom outdoor kitchen!)

But hey, if you have the budget and don’t mind waiting… An integrated swim-up bar may be perfect for you.

Now, you could always save a dime by adding submersible bar stools to an existing pool. This DIY workaround will still leave your guests happy… Though it’s not something that’ll boost your ROI down the line.

And even then, you’ll still have to work out the details of the “dry side.” How are you planning to make drinks and serve your guests?

This final option may spark some ideas…

Permanent Poolside Bar

poolside l shape outdoor kitchen

If you already have a pool ready to go, or just plain don’t want to spend the time and money on an integrated swim-up bar… A poolside bar island can be a more cost-effective way to add a touch of luxury.

This method will be more expensive and involved than buying an outdoor bar cart… But the end result is longer-lasting, with a much higher payoff.

So, what exactly does this entail?

A permanent poolside bar is located on the patio, just steps away from the water’s edge.

Unlike a swim-up bar, you won’t be serving food and drinks directly to guests in the pool… But refreshments will still be conveniently on hand.

Depending on your preferences, a poolside bar can be as simplistic or functional as you’d like.

You can flesh it out with all types of patio furniture, roof structures, and bar accessories

And many homeowners choose to factor in a complete outdoor kitchen alongside their poolside bar.

In addition to sinks, storage, coolers, and outdoor refrigerators… An outdoor kitchen beside your bar island can bring on the cooking power with built-in grills, pizza ovens, burners, and more.

But no matter what you end up going for… Your poolside bar should meet some basic standards.

A Piece Of Advice On Poolside Bars

Pool Pavilion with l shaped Outdoor Kitchen equipped with an asado smoker

When designing a permanent poolside bar… You’ll want to consider material quality.

As with bar carts… Wood and metal poolside bars should be kept at an arm’s length. Rust, corrosion, rotting, and warping aren’t welcome guests at your pool party!

As for a good pool bar material… Concrete is at the top of our list. (It’s what we use for our own Ready to Assemble outdoor kitchen panels!)

It isn’t really phased by weather, water, or other environmental stressors… Making it a solid long-term choice for both the surround structure and countertops of your bar island. (Granite is another apt choice to “top” off your bar!)

Now, as for any bar accessories you’ll be including (like refrigerators, sinks, or storage)… These also need to be designed for durability.

And there’s no better way to guarantee quality than by opting for all-304 stainless steel, outdoor-rated components.

Your poolside bar should be a permanent fixture, after all… And choosing the right materials will ensure that it lasts.

FAQ

A swim-up bar should be located in a shallow area of your pool, where the water averages between 30-42 inches deep.

This luxury outdoor bar design allows guests in the pool to stay seated in the water, while also giving them easy access to the bar top to reach their food and drink.

A swim-up pool bar provides entertainment, introduces a luxury feel to your outdoor space, and makes it ultra-convenient to serve guests… Without forcing anyone to leave the pool.

A swim-up bar features submerged bar stools and a bar top directly beside the pool… Allowing guests to stay in the water as they are served food and drink.

A poolside bar, on the other hand, doesn’t directly allow you to serve guests in the water. Rather, they will have to get out of the water and take a short walk to a separate bar island beside the pool.

Built in Grill DIY: Good Idea or Not? Expert Advice & 5 Ideas https://rtaoutdoorliving.com/built-in-grill-diy-ideas/ Mon, 30 Oct 2023 19:19:38 +0000 https://rtaoutdoorliving.com/?p=70400 Read more]]>

If you’ve got a freestanding grill that you’re particularly attached to…

You might be wondering how to incorporate it into an outdoor kitchen.

You already have a grill you love… So why spend the extra cash on a brand-new grill?

Seems logical.

But is it actually the best decision?

That’s what we’re here to parse out.

Because the reality is… A built in grill DIY project isn’t as cut and dry as it may seem.

built in grill DIY featured image

And being outdoor kitchen experts… We know all too well how complex the topic can be.

We’ve designed thousands (and installed hundreds) of custom outdoor kitchens.

Over the years… We’ve gained an intimate knowledge of how exactly a grill should be designed and installed into a BBQ island.

So with this experience in mind… Let’s get to it, shall we?

Quicklinks:

Not All Grills are Built-In

grill cart with side burner

First, we have to clarify some terms.

You’re interested in a built in grill DIY, right?

Well, not all grills actually meet the definition of “built-in”.

It’s sort of like how all squares are rectangles… But not all rectangles are squares.

All grills are, well, grills... But again, not all of them qualify as being truly built in.

So what’s the difference?

It really comes down to design.

Freestanding grills (like a Weber or Nexgrill) are designed to be on a cart. They are not meant to be modified or placed inside of a grill station.

In other words… This is the type of grill you own and are familiar with.

Whereas, built in grills are specifically designed to be installed into an island structure.

We know, this explanation seems way too obvious… But it’s true.

And understanding why these two types of grills exist is crucial.

So let’s get into some of the differences… And why a freestanding grill should never be fully built into an outdoor kitchen structure.

Ventilation is a Problem

Safety is the number one reason why you need a fully-fledged built-in grill for your outdoor kitchen.

Freestanding and built-in grills are not designed to ventilate in the same way.

Because a built-in grill will be surrounded by the island structure… Ventilation has to be designed in such a way that the structure will not obstruct airflow.

Naturally, freestanding grills don’t account for this… Because they’re not meant to be enclosed.

So, what’s the risk if you don’t heed this advice?

Well… You’re setting yourself up for the risk of a BBQ island fire, or even an explosion.

Excessive heat buildup can easily cause combustible materials to spark a flame… And unventilated gas buildup is just as likely to cause an island explosion. (Or exacerbate a fire.)

Point is, for the sake of safety… Just pony up the cash for a true built-in grill!

Modifications Void Your Warranty

If you needed some more convincing beyond safety… How about voiding your grill warranty?

When building a freestanding grill into an outdoor kitchen… You’re likely going to have to make some modifications.

This could involve cutting the legs off your grill… Or cutting it out of the cart itself. (If you can’t unscrew the grill unit.)

Either way, this modification is likely to void your warranty.

Which means if something goes wrong with your grill… You’re fully on the hook to fix it.

Longevity is Questionable

economy grill cart made with 430 stainless steel

And to add insult to injury… You’ll also have to deeply consider the longevity of your freestanding grill.

Since you’re going through the trouble of building a BBQ island… It follows that you would want this project to last a long time. Right?

What are we getting at?

Unfortunately, the vast majority of freestanding grills aren’t constructed to last a long time. Most warranties span to 1, 3, or if you’re lucky… 10 years. (A good built-in grill will have a lifetime warranty.)

Which means your existing grill is likely to peter out well before your island structure is starting to show signs of age.

And you’re thinking… “That’s not a big deal. I can just replace it, can’t I?”

Well…

Replacements are Dodgy

When you’re modifying a freestanding grill to build into a grill station… Replacements aren’t going to be straightforward 99% of the time.

Why?

In order to make your freestanding grill fit into the island structure… You will have to create a custom cutout.

And if the grill you originally purchased isn’t being manufactured anymore… You’ll have to start from scratch. (Or deal with an unsightly, non-functional hole.)

Opting for a built-in grill completely avoids this issue.

Built-in grills tend to have similar dimensions across brands. So even if your original grill is discontinued… You can purchase from another brand with the same dimensions.

Once again, springing for a built-in grill might not save you money upfront… But it will certainly save you time, stress, and headaches down the road.

...It Just Plain Doesn’t Look Right

This final point is up for debate… But prominent enough to be worth a mention.

No matter how hard you try… Putting a freestanding grill into an outdoor kitchen just won’t look quite right.

It’s obviously not meant for use inside an outdoor kitchen… And as a result, sticks out like a sore thumb.

And if you have other built-in appliances, you won’t be able to achieve a streamlined look.

Your refrigerator, drawers, and doors might match… But the grill doesn’t. (And everyone knows it.)

You might not be bothered by the inconsistencies. However, many homeowners are!

So keep this in mind if you prefer to have everything just so.

With all that said, let’s take a look at some built in grill DIY projects… And whether or not they’re a smart idea.

The Wild West of Built in Grill Ideas DIY

As you search for different guides on building a built-in grill… You’ll find that there are actually quite a few methods online.

But as we just explained, that’s generally not a good idea.

Are there ways you can build a freestanding grill into an outdoor kitchen… Without the consequences?

Let’s discuss.

Option 1: DIY Built in Gas Grill in Rolling Cart

built in grill on a rolling cart

Some homeowners will build a full-on rolling cart to put their freestanding grill into.

This will have a large cutout for your grill, possibly cutouts for other appliances… And provide you with some counter space.

Without looking at things too deeply… This approach seems to have some benefits.

The aesthetic will look a bit more cohesive than other options we’ll discuss… Plus, you’ll still have the mobility of a regular cart-style grill. (And you still have a place to store your propane tank.)

But there’s a lot of issues with this method.

In fact… It’s a textbook example of everything that’s wrong with a typical DIY built in grill project.

Con #1: Fully Enclosed Structure

For one, you’re fully enclosing your freestanding grill into a structure.

We’ve already explained the issues here… So we won’t beat the point to death.

However, it’s important to reiterate just how dangerous this decision is.

Your freestanding grill will not be able to ventilate as designed… Opening you up for the risk of a fire or explosion one day.

Con #2: Material Hazards

wood outdoor kitchen frame warping due to moisture exposure

Secondly, material choices are usually going to be problematic.

Some bloggers will make these islands with metal frames… Which is a better choice. (Although it will still rust or corrode over time.)

However, the average DIYer simply isn’t going to be equipped to work with metal.

Which leaves you with wood as your only option.

And that means you’ll be putting wood frames right up against a grill that can’t ventilate properly.

Sounds like a recipe for disaster, doesn’t it?

That’s because it is.

That excessive heat generation significantly increases your risk of a fire… And even fire retardant pressure treated wood won’t save you there.

So for the sake of safety… You’re better off seeking other options.

Con #3: You’ll Likely Have to Modify Your Grill

man modifying grill cart

Still not convinced?

On top of what we just mentioned… You’ll likely have to modify your grill to make it fit in this island structure.

Which means that once you start hacking away… That freestanding grill warranty is probably null and void.

So is it really worth it?

The Verdict

Make no mistake. This type of project is not recommended.

But is there a workaround?

Well… Somewhat.

But it involves keeping your freestanding grill as-is.

The best alternative is to build a separate rolling island… Instead of trying to mash your freestanding grill into it.

You won’t mess with the warranty, materials won’t become a safety hazard… And your grill will be able to ventilate as normal.

Plus, you’ll still be able to benefit from added counter space and storage.

Is it really an outdoor kitchen? No. But it’s at least an option that won’t put your family at risk.

That said… There are some other options you may prefer.

Option 2: Adding Stone Structure to Freestanding Grill Cart

close up of stone outdoor kitchen

If you can’t live with the thought of using a separate rolling island with your grill… You might be enticed by the idea of bedazzling your existing freestanding grill.

Now, keep in mind… This grill island idea will only work if your grill has large shelves on each side.

So how does this project work, exactly?

Well, when finished… Your grill shelves will serve as the countertop.

So all you’re actually doing is building an island structure underneath the shelves. This structure is then finished with stone veneer, brick, stucco, or another finish.

This won’t obstruct your ventilation… But there’s still some issues to be had.

Con #1: Materials Could Still be an Issue

concrete block outdoor kitchen frames advantages

While the ventilation of your grill won’t be directly obstructed… It’s still going to get quite hot.

And with the structure being directly attached to your grill… It’s possible these materials could get hot enough to combust. (Particularly if you’re using wood.)

To get around this… It’s best to work with masonry materials like brick or concrete block.

Con #2: Doesn’t Look that Great

stone built around grill cart

If we’re being honest with ourselves… The results aren’t all that impressive from an aesthetic standpoint.

Yes, it makes the grill itself look slightly better… But you’re not fooling anyone into believing this is a full-fledged grill island.

If you’re not deterred by the look, that’s great!

But the reality is, most of us are looking for more professional results.

In which case… You might be better off forking over the cash for a full-on outdoor kitchen.

Con #3: Lots of Effort for Little Gain

Unfortunately, this outdoor kitchen island doesn’t offer any added functionality.

You’re not adding counter space… You’re not getting more storage… And you’re not getting any other appliances added.

So is it really worth all the effort?

You’re investing all this time and money into a grill cart that’s only going to last a few years anyway… Which seems like a lot of fuss for little benefit.

Is it going to hurt? No.

But if it were up to us, we’d just skip the project altogether.

The Verdict

Our previous statement pretty much sums it up!

Putting a stone or brick finish directly onto your grill might slightly improve the look… But it’s a huge time investment for little return.

If you really want to do it… Knock yourself out. (Just make sure you use non-combustible materials!)

Otherwise, keep reading for some more functional ideas.

Option 3: Built in Grill DIY Kamado Table

If you’ve got a kamado grill kicking around… These smokers are a great contender for a grill island cooking area.

Many kamado outdoor kitchen projects will involve setting it into a table… With a circular countertop cutout surrounding the kamado. (But this isn’t the only option.)

In some cases, this can actually be an excellent solution.

But you have to do it properly!

So let’s go over the missteps first.

Con #1: Unsafe if You’re Using Combustibles

kamado joe and combustible materials should not be together

We won’t belabor the point here… But we want to make sure you’re keeping it top of mind.

Combustible materials and your grill don’t mix!

So stay away from wood. This will make your kamado outdoor kitchen risky to use.

The alternative?

You can use metal if you’ve got the right tools… (And don’t care if the structure rusts or corrodes in a couple seasons.)

Or you can use masonry materials. Brick, stone, and concrete are all good options. (However, these require a high skill cap.)

An Easy outdoor kitchen solution

Take the hassle out of DIY by using our free 3D design tool. We will bring your outdoor kitchen dreams to life, get started today.

Con #2: Countertop Cutout Could be Difficult to DIY

If you want your countertop to hug the kamado… This could be a tricky step to properly pull off.

Why?

For one, you’ll be limited to creating pour in place concrete countertops.

Which means… You’ll have to make sure you get your measurements exactly right.

If you’re confident and experienced, you might not have reason to be concerned.

But make no mistake… This task isn’t for beginners!

And the only other alternative is to hire a countertop fabricator… Which somewhat defeats the purpose of this being a DIY project.

re keeping it top of mind.

The Verdict

small outdoor kitchen with kamado smoker

As long as you’re sticking with non-combustible materials… This BBQ grill island idea can be an excellent option.

And if you don’t want to make a special countertop cutout… You don’t have to limit yourself to this solution.

You can create a pedestal that sits lower than the rest of your island. Your kamado will be at a comfortable cooking height… And won’t require a crazy countertop.

Alternatively, some brands offer kamado sleeves (like Coyote Outdoor Living). These are metal inserts that you can set inside your island.

The kamado will nestle inside the sleeve… Making it a seamless addition to your island.

But what if you don’t own a kamado?

Option 4: Pellet Grill Table

This DIY outdoor kitchen idea is quite similar to our previous entry. The only difference is you’re working with a pellet grill over a kamado.

So if you’ve got a Traeger or Pit Boss lying around… This project will be appealing to you.

This project involves creating a recessed stand for your pellet grill… Directly connected to a counter height work surface.

And if done well… It could be a nice solution for your outdoor living space.

What’s the catch?

Con #1: Combustibles Can be a Problem

We know… We’re bringing this point up again.

It’s just that important!

Veer away from wood and other combustible materials (PVC, composite decking) for this project… And you’ll be good to go.

And again, we’ll put in a good word for masonry materials. Concrete, brick, and stone will last you many years when done skillfully.

Con #2: Might Require Grill Modification

Depending on the pellet grill you have… It may have to be modified for placement on the recessed stand.

Older Traegers, for example, might require you to cut the legs off.

Your pellet grill might already be out of warranty at this point anyway… But cutting metal is still a big deal, and it’s all too easy to injure yourself.

So if you’re going to spring for this idea… Stick with a pellet grill that allows you to safely unscrew the legs.

The Verdict

pellet grill rta outdoor kitchen

Just like the kamado built-in BBQ island… This pellet grill island could be a worthwhile pursuit.

As long as you use non-combustible materials and the right pellet grill… There aren’t any issues here in relation to safety.

You can also easily modify this layout to include storage for pellets and other necessities for your grill area.

Now, before we wrap up… There’s one final idea to look at.

Option 5: Grill Between Two Islands

Last but not least… You could slide your gas grill cart between two islands.

While it’s true you won’t achieve that true “built-in” look… This home improvement project can work well, depending on the circumstances.

Some homeowners will make “islands” out of cinder blocks, and use patio stones for the countertops.

Others will create fully finished BBQ islands with a space in-between them for your grill.

So let’s get to the facts about this outdoor kitchen design.

Con #1: Not the Prettiest Option

built in grill cart

We’d be lying to ourselves if we said this option looks professional and luxurious.

It’s not going to offer a cohesive look… Which definitely loses some points on that count.

But we have to admit, some materials look better than others.

If you’re just using plain cinder blocks… The finish will not be appealing.

But if you spring for granite countertops and a stone finish… You’ll get a better result. (For a ton more effort.)

Con #2: Can be Unsafe, Depending on What You’re Using

Graphic showing that cinderblock isnt flammable

Just like with several of the other ideas we’ve discussed… You can construct it safely, or unsafely.

It all comes down to materials.

Surprise, surprise… Combustible materials are once again off the table here.

Cinder blocks may not look pretty… But they’re a safe bet for this project.

And if you’re willing to put in the effort… You could mortar on a stone or brick veneer to level-up the aesthetics.

Con #3: Might not Work for a Future Grill

Eventually, your freestanding grill will have to be retired.

And if you can’t buy a replacement model… There’s a chance your new grill won’t fit into the gap you created.

Which puts you in an awkward position.

You’re stuck with this random gap in the middle of your island… And your new grill just has to stand off to the side.

If you do end up opting for plain cinder blocks that aren’t mortared together… You could rearrange the structure fairly easily.

Either way, it’s a risk!

The Verdict

grill cart with two islands on either side

Using cinder blocks to slide your grill between could be a nice temporary option… Or a stone veneer option could be a nice compromise.

Either way, this could be a nice project if you’re not quite ready for a full outdoor kitchen.

But if you truly want all of the benefits a real outdoor grill island can provide…

What Is A California Room? Top Benefits & 9 Captivating Ideas https://rtaoutdoorliving.com/california-room-ideas/ Sun, 24 Sep 2023 13:38:19 +0000 https://rtaoutdoorliving.com/?p=70211 Read more]]>

Let’s start things off with a quote from San Francisco born and raised poet, Gary Snyder:

“Nature is not a place to visit, it is home.”

And what better way to embrace this notion… Than with a California room?

A seamless fusion of homey comforts and open-air living… This is a space where you can bask in the natural light, breathe in the fresh air, and unwind under the stars, all within your very own backyard.

We hardly have to tell you how great this sounds. After all, there’s a reason why California rooms have become a go-to home design trend… Even beyond the bounds of the Golden State.

So if you’re looking to hop on the bandwagon and enjoy the simple pleasures of outdoor living, right outside your back door… Then read on to learn all there is to know about California rooms (and why you should want one).

(Psst! Stay tuned ‘til the end to check out inspired, real-life California room ideas from our customers!)

Quick Links:

The What And Why Of California Rooms

Aptly referred to as outdoor living rooms… The California room is just that.

Unlike a simple covered patio or porch… These elevated indoor-outdoor living spaces are embellished with homey touches, allowing them to serve as seamless transition rooms between inside and out.

Though California rooms come in all shapes, sizes, and styles… They’ll feature at least one full wall and a roof, leaving the space part-sheltered, part-open to the outdoors. (Hence, their popularity in regions with year-round mild weather… Like their namesake state, California!)

Inspired by the open-air Hawaiian lanai… The California room originated in southern California to take full advantage of the region’s pleasant climate.

Today, however, they’re proving to be a popular addition in other temperate locales across the country.

But that said, California rooms are hardly the only indoor-outdoor home design trend taking homeowners by storm…

Florida Rooms... Sunrooms... California Rooms... What’s The Difference?

Florida Room

California Room

At this point… You may be curious about what sets California rooms apart from other outdoor living spaces, such as Florida rooms or sunrooms.

Allow us to break it down for you.

For starters, the phrases “Florida room” and “sunroom” refer to the same thing.

Generally, those living in the southeastern US lean toward the term “Florida room,” while the rest of the country embraces the term “sunroom.”

Whether you call it “Florida room” or “sunroom,” however… What you’re really referring to is a fully enclosed addition off the side or back of a home, featuring a complete roof and glass or screen walls.

Florida rooms/sunrooms will let in as much natural light as possible… Without actually exposing you to the outdoor elements.

California rooms, on the other hand, will feature a full roof… But they are lacking those protective screens or glass walls.

Because sunrooms/Florida rooms provide the illusion of being immersed in the outdoors, while simultaneously shielding you from the elements... This makes them the perfect choice for places with unpredictable weather patterns.

Say you’re living in Texas, for instance. A fully enclosed Florida room would certainly keep the humid summer air at bay.

On the other hand… In a spot like New York, adding heaters to a sunroom would be a great way to trap in heat and enjoy outdoor living, even in the off-season.

Without enclosed walls for proper climate control… California rooms are instead intended for locales with temperate weather year-round.

Understanding the nuances between California rooms and sunrooms/Florida rooms is crucial… As it will help you choose the right type of space for your needs.

But if you’re lucky enough to live in a region that does have beautiful weather all four seasons… Capitalizing on that with a California room is an incredible idea.

ROI On Your Mind? Homebuyers Drool Over California Rooms

outdoor kitchen on patio with dining room table

When building a new home or adding new construction to your property… It’s important to know if all the time and money you’ll be dishing out will be worth it down the road.

In other words… If you decide to cash in on your home, will adding a California room pay off?

Because they’re open to the outdoors and not properly climate-controlled… California rooms don’t quite qualify as real “rooms.”

So when you decide to resell… They won’t be included in the total usable square footage of your property.

But don’t give up hope.

A well-designed California room can still boost your property’s resale value… In the form of curb appeal.

Homebuyers tend to be drawn to outdoor living spaces like moths to a flame… And a California room can certainly be an appealing feature for potential purchasers.

In fact, according to the real estate experts at Rocket Homes… An attached outdoor living space can actually add at least $20,000 to your home’s resale value.

Considering the average California room cost is around $15,000… This equates to earning all your money back, and then some.

But that’s not all… Adding other permanent fixtures to your California room will only increase your property’s total value. (Cough, cough… outdoor kitchens).

So on that note… Let’s run through tips for crafting a well-designed California room.

How To Use Your California Room To The Fullest

The key to a well-crafted California room is bringing indoor amenities outside… Taking the space beyond a part-porch, part-room and transforming it into a true livable addition to your outdoor living area.

So, if you’re wondering how to decorate and furnish a California room of your own… Let’s run through your best options.

Create A Sense Of Continuity Between Inside And Out

l shaped outdoor grill island on deck with dining table

First and foremost, California rooms are all about creating a seamless transition from your indoor space to the great outdoors… Blurring the lines between the two.

So, how can you accomplish this?

Though not a necessity, consider adding expansive windows or large glass doors to your home, which open out to the California room.

Natural light will spill into your home before you even step foot out the door… As your California room beckons from the other side.

Additionally, cohesion between inside and out largely comes down to complementary design elements.

Use similar materials, colors, and patterns for the flooring, furnishings, and decor both inside and out… Tying your indoor and outdoor areas together to make the two spaces feel more like one. (Your California room is meant to be an addition to your home… And should look the part!)

Finally, peppering potted plants and greenery inside and out is another way to bridge the gap between your home’s interior and the outdoor California room… Turning two separate spaces into part of the same whole, and fully embracing the fresh-air living experience.

Take A Stab At Climate Control

an rta summer kitchen under a covered patio with a fireplace

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again… California rooms are best suited to regions with mild weather year-round.

But honestly, even the most temperate locales can experience unexpected cold fronts or heat waves every now and again!

And if you want an outdoor space that’s prepared to deal with Mother Nature’s inevitable mood swings… We’d suggest taking steps to keep your California room climate-controlled.

But wait… Didn’t we already say that proper climate control is nearly impossible in California rooms?

Well, yes.

The open-air nature of these outdoor living rooms makes it difficult to ensure consistent, steady heating and cooling, day in and day out.

But that said, there are still ways to keep your California room warmer on cool nights… And cooler on warm days. (Just don’t expect it to be as reliable as central air!)

Hanging ceiling fans from the roof can stir up a refreshing breeze on stuffy summer days…

And when the temps drop… A fire pit, fireplace, or outdoor heaters will stave off the chill, and keep your California room more comfortable.

Light Up Your Outdoor Living Space

Just because the sun goes down… Doesn’t mean you should leave your California room.

And if you want to keep your parties going well into the night… Lighting is a key component to factor into your California room design.

Luckily, you won’t be limited when it comes to options.

From recessed lighting to chandeliers, pendant lights to wall sconces, string lights and more… There’s really no end to how you choose to illuminate.

What you end up choosing comes down to your personal tastes… So don’t hold yourself back!

If you’re keen on a calming ambiance after sundown… Consider casting your California room in a warm, relaxing glow with subtle string or pendant lights.

But if you’d rather go a step further and make your outdoor room bright as can be… Opt for more powerful recessed lighting, chandeliers, or wall sconces around the area.

Add Outdoor-Friendly Furnishings

l shaped outdoor kitchen in texas next to outdoor seating with a pergola

At their core, California rooms are meant for unwinding, kicking back, and socializing with those nearest and dearest to you.

So naturally, your outdoor space should be outfitted accordingly… With the right outdoor-rated furnishings. (Vinyl wicker, rattan, and recycled plastic are top-notch choices for weather-resistant outdoor furniture!)

While the sky’s the limit on how you furnish your backyard California room… Take a moment to consider your intentions for the space.

If you’re envisioning an al fresco social hub… Treat the space as if it were an outdoor family room. Fill it with outdoor-rated love seats, sofas, side tables, throw rugs, pillows, plus small decor items for personalization.

But if your dream California room design involves cooking and eating… Consider adding a dining area!

A well-fitting dining table and chairs set will do wonders to round out your room.

And of course… You can’t overlook the outdoor kitchen itself.

Opt For An Outdoor Kitchen

If your aim is to spend as much time as possible in your California room… Adding an outdoor kitchen is practically a must.

Just steps outside your home… You’ll have a complete outdoor cooking setup for fresh BBQ and backyard parties year-round.

Plus, on those hot summer days… An outdoor kitchen can actually replace your indoor kitchen, effectively keeping heat (and food odors) outside.

With the option to add built-in grills, pizza ovens, refrigerators, sinks, ample storage, and more… It’s safe to say your summer kitchen will match (if not exceed) the functionality of your indoor setup.

But not only are outdoor kitchens a practical choice for your California room… There’s another bonus worth mentioning.

Building a permanent outdoor kitchen may actually further boost your property’s value!

Depending on your design, outdoor kitchens have been shown to have an ROI of 50% – 300%. If the resale value of a California room didn’t already seem sweet… An outdoor kitchen will certainly seal the deal!

Now, there’s just one important caveat that needs to be brought to light.

If you’re planning to build an outdoor kitchen under coverConsider including proper ventilation. This will ensure your safety, curb potential fire hazards, and keep your appliance warranties in effect.

High-Class California Room Design For Cooking And Dining

With an outdoor kitchen and dining table… This California room is perfect for cooking and dining the day away, in style. (Just look at that chandelier!)

While partial walls may border the space… It’s still largely open to the fresh air, allowing you to catch a cool breeze day or night, and providing that al fresco feel (just with a little extra protection from the elements)

Fresh Air Family Room

Large glass doors swing wide to this open-air family room… And as you walk through you’ll be greeted by the great outdoors.

This large California room design has a little bit of everything… With a homey lounge seating area and TV for entertainment, lighting for nighttime enjoyment, plus a grill island for that extra layer of functionality.

Really, would you ever need to go inside?

Large Indoor-Outdoor Living Space

Here’s another large California room idea… Which spans this homeowner’s entire back patio!

Again, there’s something for everyone in this design.

The large sliding glass doors first open up to the BBQ island and dining area…

Walk down the patio, illuminated by pendant lights, and you’ll then come across additional seating space. (And what about that breathtaking view?)

California & Sunroom Combined

California and sunroom combined

This California room may be on the smaller side, but there’s still much to love.

The roof features both hanging lights and a ceiling fan… Outfitting the space for both climate-control and evening entertainment.

Then, peer through the nearby wall… And you’ll notice that the space opens into a full-on sunroom!

This goes to show that if you can’t settle for one outdoor living space alone… You can always double up.

Cozy Outdoor Seating Area

Here’s another California room proving that smaller spaces shouldn’t hold you back.

This homeowner maximized their covered outdoor space with an outdoor kitchen and welcoming seating area… And needless to say, the end result is certainly tempting.

Outdoor Entertainment Oasis Under Cover

Windows and a glass door peer out on this backyard California room, beckoning you to come outside.

In this California room design, you’ll walk out the glass back doors into a small covered seating area, with both recessed lighting and a ceiling fan to keep things comfortable.

But that’s not all there is to the space.

Walk down the steps, and you’ll find yourself face-to-face with an outdoor kitchen under an umbrella!

Covered Patio California Room

Conversely, here’s another California room design where most everything is under the same roof.

An extra-large outdoor kitchen design boasts ample bar seating… An outdoor TV… Plus plenty of dining area.

And you can access it all through a massive sliding glass door, effortlessly transforming this California room into a bona fide addition to the home.

Blank Slate California Room Idea

Allow this example to serve as a blank slate… And let your imagination roam free.

FAQ

Aptly referred to as outdoor living rooms… The California room is just that.

Unlike a simple covered patio or porch… These elevated indoor-outdoor living spaces are embellished with homey touches, allowing them to serve as seamless transition rooms between inside and out.

Though California rooms come in all shapes, sizes, and styles… They’ll feature at least one full wall and a roof, leaving the space part-sheltered, part-open to the outdoors.

While both sunrooms and Florida rooms are fully enclosed with glass or screen walls… A California room will have an open-air layout.

Sunrooms and Florida rooms provide the illusion of being immersed in the outdoors, while simultaneously shielding you from the elements... Making them the perfect choice for places with unpredictable weather patterns.

Without enclosed walls… California rooms are instead intended for locales with temperate climates year-round.

Inspired by the open-air Hawaiian lanai… The California room originated in southern California to take full advantage of the region’s pleasant climate. Hence, the name “California” room!

Though the average cost will vary greatly depending on how grandiose your design ideas are… The average cost of a California room is generally considered to be around $15,000.

You’re in the market for a new grill… And there are several boxes that you need to check.

You want a grill that can also be used as a smoker.

You want a grill that’s simple and no-frills… But produces reliably delicious results.

And you want a grill that’s fueled with flavor-packed charcoal.

In our minds, there’s only one type of grill that ticks all these boxes.

A kamado grill.

an image of a freestanding coyote asado ready to be used in the backyard

These unique little cookers can just about do it all… And we’ll cover everything you need to know to decide if a kamado is right for you.

So, what makes us qualified to speak on this?

For one, we partner with a company that sells kamado grills. (So we’d like to think we know a thing or two.)

But more importantly, several of our team members own a kamado grill… And use them regularly. (Including yours truly.)

With that said, let’s start with a friendly comparison.

Quicklinks

Why Get a Kamado Over a Charcoal Grill

At this stage, you may not be fully convinced about buying a kamado grill.

Can you just get away with a regular charcoal grill?

Most models are far cheaper than a kamado… And it’s always nice to put some savings back into your pocket.

So let’s discuss a few reasons why a kamado is worth the cash.

Insulative Properties Cook from All Sides

Arguably, heat retention is the biggest draw to purchasing a kamado grill…. Especially when compared to a regular charcoal grill.

Why?

The ceramic walls of a kamado can essentially be viewed as a giant heat battery.

It absorbs the heat from your coals… And doesn’t waste a single BTU.

So on one hand… This means that a kamado is using your premium lump charcoal as efficiently as possible. (Talk about getting a bang for your buck!)

On the other hand… This “heat battery” lands you with superior results over a standard charcoal grill.

The radiant heat from the ceramic is cooking your dish from all sides. This results in a quicker, more even cook.

The thin metal walls of a charcoal grill simply can’t keep up with this effect.

Not to mention… This radiant heat also allows you to go far beyond the standard grilling and searing.

Properly Equipped for Low & Slow Smokes

While you can smoke in a regular ol’ charcoal grill… Does that mean you really should?

We’d say not.

And here’s where a kamado charcoal grill has a huge leg up over its standard counterpart.

These cookers double as an incredible smoker.

You’ve got the radiant heat, yes… But the airflow of a kamado is truly where these smokers sing.

Due to the location of small vents at the top and bottom of the grill… You end up with a convection-style airflow.

Heat is coming up to the top of the dome, with cooler air sinking to the bottom. The air is fully circulating… Which means a beautiful stream of smoke is constantly enveloping your protein. (On all sides!)

A regular charcoal grill doesn’t have that type of convection… And the product will simply pale in comparison with a kamado.

But the versatility of these cookers doesn’t end there.

Wider Variety of Cuisine Options

asado stand modern concrete

Aside from grilling, high-heat searing, and smoking… A kamado is well-equipped to cook a wide variety of cuisines.

Some models even support the addition of a rotisserie kit… (Which some standard charcoal grills offer as well, to be fair.)

But what we’re really getting at is the potential for baking and roasting.

Due to the presence of radiant and convection heat… Your kamado can act much like an indoor oven. (Just with charcoal flavors.)

Which means, you could be baking a full-on NY style pizza with the help of a pizza stone… Or roasting a delightful medley of vegetables to go along with your burgers.

You might even consider baking up an apple pie or blueberry cobbler for dessert.

Ultimately, if you’re looking for an all-in-one outdoor cooking system… Nothing can truly beat a kamado grill. (A Weber kettle certainly can’t compete!)

Yet, not all of them are created equal.

Types of Kamado Grills

Ultimately, while they may look similar… Not all kamado grills are made the same way.

Let’s discuss.

Ceramic Grill Kamado

big green egg with lid open

Thus far, we’ve focused our attention on the ceramic kamado grill.

It’s the original form we all know and love… And from our perspective, it tends to perform the most effectively.

As we’ve already mentioned… Ceramic is a true winner when it comes to heat retention and radiant heat.

Temperature control is seamless once you get it set… And you’ll actually have to “fight” your kamado to get that cooking temperature changed!

So if you’ve got your kamado set to a nice 350°F… It will effortlessly hold that for hours on end.

But ceramic is also an extremely low-maintenance material.

There’s a chance that your kamado will crack… But this is a rare occurrence. (And most ceramic kamados will come with a lifetime warranty to cover this.)

Other than this risk, a ceramic kamado is virtually indestructible in the outdoor environment.

It won’t rust, corrode, or rot… And the only thing you may have to replace on occasion are metal or wooden components. (Hinges, handles, etc.)

Speaking of metal…

Metal Grill Kamado

blaze freestanding cast aluminum, kamado grill

Although less common… In your search, you’ll likely encounter metal kamado grills.

Blaze’s kamado grill and Char-Griller’s akorn kamado are prime examples of this.

But the quality is really a mixed bag.

Blaze’s kamado is constructed with cast aluminum and is incredibly durable… (Although, there is a chance of corrosion over time.)

Whereas, the akorn kamados are typically constructed with double or triple walled steel. The quality of steel is unspecified, leading us to believe it’s prone to rust and corrosion.

And while this downgrade in materials makes the Char-Griller akorn kamados palatable price-wise… As Ben Franklin once said,

“The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.”

Which is ultimately just an eloquent way of saying… You get what you pay for.

So are metal kamados any good or not?

Well, if you’ve got your heart set on it… A Blaze kamado should perform quite well for you.

That said… There’s still the issue of conductor vs insulator that we can’t get around.

Metal is a conductor (transfers heat)… While ceramic is an insulator (traps and holds heat).

So no matter which way you cut it… You’ll lose some heat retention by going with a metal kamado. This also has the consequence of making it slightly less fuel efficient.

And on the topic of fuel… Do you always have to use charcoal in your kamado?

Gas Kamado Grill

If you just can’t part with the convenience of a gas grill… Vision grills offers a one-of-a-kind kamado gas grill.

These ceramic grills can be fueled by charcoal, of course… But there’s also a quickchange gas insert you can use to convert your kamado into a gas grill. (It will be fueled with a liquid propane tank.)

So, does having more options make this grill superior?

From our perspective, it’s better to let a kamado do what it does best… Make incredible charcoal-kissed dishes.

In our minds, the gas attachments just muddy up the works a bit… And in most cases, you’re better off having a dedicated gas grill.

But if you simply don’t have the space or money for two separate grills, and you can’t give up on gas… This option might be suitable for your needs.

No matter what type of kamado you decide to buy… The way you operate them is pretty much universal.

Using Your Kamado Grill Smoker

In preparation for your purchase… Let’s cover a few “tricks of the trade” when it comes to using your new kamado grill.

Lighting Your Kamado

There are a number of ways to light your kamado… But we prefer to keep things simple.

All you need is to get yourself a charcoal chimney and fire starters.

Fill up your chimney with some lump charcoal, toss some fire starters into the bottom… And light the fire starters.

Now, it’s just a waiting game.

Most of the time, it will take about 20-30 minutes to get up and running… But it’s always a sure thing.

Once your charcoal is lit, you’ll dump it into the firebox, let your kamado grill warm up… And then start fiddling with the temperature!

Setting Temperatures

As your kamado is heating up, you can work on setting your target temperature.

Admittedly… This is the most difficult part of the process!

It’s an art that will take some time for you to master. But once you do… This step will become stress-free.

The key is understanding how your vents work.

The bottom vent is almost like a vacuum, sucking up air into the grill… With the top vents funneling that air out.

The more your vents are opened, the more heat you will end up with.

Starting out, you’ll want to keep your vents pretty open. As you see that temperature start to climb… Pay close attention when you’re about 50°F away.

At this point, you’ll want to choke down the bottom vent significantly. Most of the time, we leave about an 1/8” opening, like a cracked door.

Then, you’ll manage the rest with your top vent. As your target temperature approaches, you’ll want to close down the top vent accordingly.

When your temperature is set… You’ll also just want the top vent to be slightly cracked open.

If everything was set properly… That temperature should remain stable for quite some time!

So let’s get cooking.

Cooking with Your Kamado Smoker Grill

tamara day cooking a pizza on a coyote asado smoker

In all honesty… This section alone could fill several articles.

So we’ll just give you an extremely high level overview!

Thankfully, due to the kamado’s ability to maintain stable temperatures so well… As long as you’re familiar with what you’re cooking, there shouldn’t be any issues.

If you’re low-and-slow smoking a rack of ribs… You’ll want to invest in a heat deflector to keep that direct heat from overcooking and drying out our protein.

And if you have tiered grates… It’s worth also putting a bowl of water underneath your ribs to add additional moisture.

For grilling and searing, the experience is not much different than what you’re already used to. Just be sure to keep the lid closed as much as possible… You don’t want to lose that heat and charcoal flavor!

As far as baking goes… Once again, the experience is not much different from your regular oven.

You’ll get your kamado set to 350° – 400°F… And bake like you normally would.

For pizzas, you’ll definitely need a pizza stone. (And higher temperatures, like 500°F – 600°F!)

And before you launch your pizza… You’ll have to let that pizza stone sit in the preheated oven for 10 minutes or so.

Once that stone is nice and hot… You can launch your pizza, and cook with the lid closed.

Most of the time, you’ll be done baking within 10 minutes.

Now that you’re done cooking… What do you do with the mess?

Cleaning & Maintenance

For the most part, cleaning your kamado is quite simple.

After every cook, you’ll want to clear your ash drawer. Some kamados make it easier than others… But even in the worst-case scenario, you’ll just need an ash tool to clear it into a bin.

It’s also smart to clean off your grill grates with a grill-safe brush. (Typically, these are made with nylon.)

And every so often, it’s worth doing a deep-clean of your kamado. (Especially if you see mold over the winter!)

In this case… Heat an empty kamado with the cooking grates and heat deflector to around 500°F.

Hold this temperature for a half hour, then close both vents completely.

Once the kamado has cooled… Clean off your cooking grates and heat deflector with a grill brush.

Also, clean out any residual ash in the firebox and walls of the kamado. You can use a handheld vacuum to help you out here.

Finally, clean out the ashtray… And put everything back in its proper place.

A deep clean once or twice a year (depending on usage frequency) will keep your kamado in tip-top shape.

But that’s enough for the cleanup. Let’s get to the fun stuff!

Kamado Cooking Accessory Options

Want to know one of the best things about a kamado grill?

It comes down to the sheer amount of accessories offered. Pizza stones, griddle plates, rotisserie kits, chicken thrones… It basically never ends!

This is where you can really customize your kamado to your unique cooking style.

Just keep in mind… Not all brands sell the full breadth of accessories, so do your research ahead of time! (Some accessories are compatible with different kamado brands, too.)

Now that you’re basically ready to whip out your credit card and make a purchase… There’s one last thing you need to know.

Who makes the best kamado grill?

Unless you’re considering a metal kamado, which can be questionable in terms of quality…

In our minds, it’s a bit of a trick question.

Why?

99% of the time… You’re going to be debating between several ceramic kamado brands.

And at the end of the day… There’s really not much difference between them.

Ceramic is ceramic. So quality and performance will be virtually identical across the board.

So really what you have to decide is… Which brand makes the best kamado smoker for you?

Which aesthetic do you prefer? Do they have the accessories and size you want? Is the price right?

So with that said… Let’s take a look at some ceramic kamado grills that might match your preferences.

Top Kamado Grill Selections of 2024

We’d be remiss not to mention the brand that started the kamado craze in the US market… Big Green Egg.

And in their nearly 50 year span… The Big Green Egg kamado line has stayed consistent across the years.

Which is why we actually don’t have a specific model recommendation here. All Green Eggs are identical in terms of features. The only difference is size!

There are 7 unique sizes on offer, from the mini to the 2XL Green Egg. Which translates to a 10” and 79 square inch cooking area… All the way up to a 29” and 672 square inch cooking area.

Compared to the Kamado Joe BBQ smoker… There’s a distinct lack of innovation in Big Green Egg’s product line.

But if you want your kamado to be as simple and no-frills as possible… The elegance of a Big Green Egg might prove to be a charmer, indeed.

As far as a warranty goes… You’ll get a limited lifetime warranty on the ceramic cooker. Metal components are covered for a period of 5 years, and wooden components are covered for a single year.

The Mini Egg starts at around $429.00… With the 2XL Big Green Egg maxing out at around $2,199.00. (Keep in mind, this pricing does not include a stand.)

Coyote is primarily known for their line of premium, built-in outdoor kitchen appliances… But they also offer their very own ceramic kamado.

Unlike Kamado Joe and Big Green Egg… You’ll have a single size option here. But for most purposes, it’s just right.

The Coyote Asado comes with a 19” cooking grid diameter… Translating to 254 square inches of cooking area.

And while this little cooker might seem unassuming on the outside… It does have a couple quality-of-life upgrades that might edge it out over other options. (We’ll get to that!)

Coyote offers a limited lifetime warranty on the ceramic… Right in line with previous mentions. All metal parts are warrantied for 5 years, with any wooden parts being warrantied for 1 year.

And with the right outdoor kitchen decor… You can truly turn your grill island into your own outdoor oasis.

Ornamenting your patio kitchen with pops of color and personal touches will allow you to feel completely at home in your outdoor cooking space.

To help spark your imagination… We’ve compiled impeccable outdoor kitchen decor ideas inspired by our happy customers’ real-life designs.

So without further ado, it’s time to start decorating.

In-Vogue Outdoor Kitchen Aesthetics

Before you start dressing up your outdoor kitchen… Ask yourself what style you’re striving for.

Sticking to a specific aesthetic will make it easier to select outdoor themed kitchen decor.

Plus, your finished outdoor space will look more visually consistent.

Need some inspiration? Here are the style trends we see homeowners return to again and again.

Organic

High end diy stacked stone terra linear grill island kit next to pool with pizza own and refrigerator

The organic aesthetic is directly inspired by nature.

It emphasizes natural or sustainable materials, pops of greenery, fluid/curving lines, and warm earthy hues.

As evidenced in the photo above… Organic outdoor kitchen decor often showcases textured natural stone elements, plant life, and warm wooden accent pieces.

Want to bring your idea to life?

Use our free 3D design tool to bring the outdoor kitchen of your dreams to reality in just a few minutes.

Modern

modern outdoor dining table by linear outdoor kitchen on deck

Modern outdoor kitchens are another ever-popular choice.

This style trend favors sleek, straight lines… Minimalism and monochromatic colors… Industrial, metal furnishings… And often focuses on functionality over flair.

If you’re after a sophisticated outdoor living space… Modern design ideas should be a top contender.

Rustic

couple sitting next to their outdoor kitchen in dallas

Similar to the organic style trend… Rustic design can be defined by natural, earth-inspired elements such as wood and stone.

It’s the polar opposite of modern design… With a preference for weathered or distressed pieces, uneven lines, and ornate, antique metal, wicker, or wooden furnishings.

A rustic outdoor kitchen should exude a warm and comfortable atmosphere… While simultaneously maintaining a semblance of elegance.

Informal

l shape outdoor kitchen on deck with seating

You may already have some outdoor kitchen design ideas in mind… But they don’t exactly conform to a specific style.

That’s okay! You’re definitely not alone.

If you’d rather embrace irregularity and asymmetry in your outdoor kitchen decor… The informal design trend may have more appeal.

Similar to organic design, curved lines and plant life will be prominent…

But the main goal of the informal style is to create a casual, laid-back space… Without necessarily adhering to specific stylistic limitations.

All in all… It leaves much more wiggle room to let your creativity roam free.

Sticking to a certain aesthetic can certainly make decorating your outdoor kitchen easier… But it’s not absolutely necessary for a beautiful design.

At the end of the day… All that really matters is whether or not you like it. So don’t be afraid to veer off course!

But regardless of the style you choose… The next step is selecting the right colors.

Creative Color Combos To Consider For Your Outdoor Kitchen Decor

Along with selecting a style… A consistent color palette is yet another great way to keep your patio kitchen cohesive.

Let’s look at some trendy examples.

Earth-Inspired Neutrals

Current outdoor design trends are seeing lots of organic hues and earth-inspired color combos.

Using these neutral shades for your outdoor kitchen decor is truly a celebration of the natural surroundings… Allowing your kitchen to harmoniously blend in with your backyard elements.

Need a visual aid? Here are some earthy-colored outdoor kitchen ideas.

Bold & Bright Pops Of Color

More intense hues and bolder color schemes are also on the rise… Adding vibrance and energy to outdoor spaces.

If you really want to make your outdoor kitchen the focal point of your backyard… Striking, eye-catching shades are the way to go.

Let’s see how other homeowners added vivid tones to their al fresco cooking and dining spaces.

Calm & Cool Color Palettes

For a more serene kitchen island… Consider calm and cool color palettes.

Here are a few examples to keep in mind for a tranquil outdoor kitchen area.

Great Grayscale Ideas

If you want to let the surrounding landscape really speak for itself… Opt for more subdued hues like black, white, and shades of gray.

These timeless tints will never go out of style… And are great for refined and delicate outdoor entertainment areas.

Outdoor Kitchen Decor Ideas To Spark Your Imagination

With style and color squared away… Now, it’s time to tackle decor ideas.

How can you decorate the perfect outdoor patio kitchen?

The ideas below should help you get started.

1. Factor Furnishings Into Your Outdoor Kitchen Area

Furnished outdoor seating areas are an ever-popular feature to be paired with a grill island.

From outdoor dining areas to cozy al fresco lounges… There are a lot of different ways to embellish your entertainment space!

Shall we have a look at some options?

Outdoor Bar

An outdoor bar is a fantastic furnishing choice for your summer kitchen… Especially for those with small spaces.

Adding an outdoor bar island and stools to your design will provide everything from extra prep area, to dining space, to an after-dinner relaxing zone.

But on top of being ergonomic and functional… Outdoor bar islands are also a great way to add some visual appeal to your kitchen area.

The right set of bar stools can beautifully mesh with your preferred decor aesthetic… Or even add a welcome pop of color or texture to your space.

Just keep in mind that you can’t use any old set of indoor kitchen bar stools in your outdoor dining area…

You’ll want to keep an eye out for outdoor-rated bar stools specifically!

For the most durable, weatherproof options… Look for bar stools constructed with metal (corrosion-resistant 304 stainless steel is ideal!), resin wicker, resin rattan, or recycled plastic.

Outdoor Dining Area

Naturally, dining tables are a go-to choice for furnishing an outdoor kitchen area.

Just like your indoor dining room… A full table and chairs set beside your outdoor cooking area will provide a spacious spot for you and your guests to enjoy meals, fresh off the grill.

But not only are they practical… Outdoor dining tables are also a great solution for those looking to fill up empty deck or patio space.

And with so many options out there… Finding the right dining table to match your outdoor kitchen decor ideas should be a walk in the park.

As with bar stools… Metal, resin wicker or rattan, or recycled plastic outdoor tables will be the most weatherproof choices.

But that said, many also gravitate towards more visually versatile wooden outdoor dining tables. In this case, we’d suggest teak or sealed wood dining sets… As these will have the highest weather-resistance. (Weatherproof covers are also a worthwhile investment!)

Cozy Outdoor Seating Area

Who said sofa sets, lounge chairs, and loveseats were only for interior design?

If you want to keep the party going after you’ve cooked and dined… Adding a lounge seating area alongside your grill station is a given.

Not only does this expand the potential of your entertainment space… But it’s another great way to make your outdoor kitchen area feel more like an extension of your home.

Not to mention… Colorful outdoor cushioning is yet another way to add aesthetic consistency throughout your space.

As with the other outdoor furniture options we’ve discussed… Resin wicker or rattan, metal, or recycled plastic options will be the longest-lasting outdoors.

And as for the cushions… Sunbrella, olefin, or acrylic fabrics are often considered the best at holding up to water and UV damage.

2. Make Your Outdoor Kitchen Homey With Decorative Accessories

So you have the furniture… Now what?

To really mimic the comforts of indoor living in your outdoor space… The next step is adding some cozy, homey touches and decorative accessories.

Need some ideas? We’ve got you covered.

If you’ll be including an outdoor bar or table alongside your BBQ island… You can adorn these areas with decorative placemats, table runners, flower vases, candles, or other small accent pieces. (Much like you’d do in your indoor space!)

Outdoor throw or area rugs on your deck or patio will also add visual intrigue and personalization to your BBQ island… Making your outdoor kitchen area feel more “lived in,” so to speak.

And if you have a lounge seating area… Including plenty of weather-resistant throw pillows is an impeccable decor idea. (Not to mention, the coziness of your outdoor space will skyrocket!)

Now, how else can you furnish an outdoor kitchen area?

3. Catch Some Shade With An Outdoor Kitchen Cover

To truly turn your patio kitchen area into an honest-to-goodness outdoor room… You can top it off with a roof!

A covered outdoor kitchen area will protect you from the elements… Keeping things cool, dry, and comfortable.

And if you play your cards right… Outdoor kitchen roofs can positively contribute to your BBQ island’s overall aesthetic appeal.

Let’s look at some popular options for your outdoor kitchen under cover.

Pergolas

modern RTA outdoor kitchen by pool in backyard under pergola

A pergola is a type of shade structure that filters light through a slatted rooftop.

Though pergolas don’t provide full coverage from the elements… They will block harsh UV rays, making your outdoor living space more comfortable on hot summer days.

To match your outdoor kitchen decor aesthetic… Pergolas are available in a variety of materials including metal, plastic, and wood.

(Note that wooden pergolas will require plenty of upkeep… Plus, they’re not fire resistant. To avoid a safety hazard, you’ll want plenty of clearance between your built-in grill and a wooden pergola!)

Pavilions And Gazebos

l shape outdoor kitchen with rug on deck under pavilion

Outdoor kitchen pavilions and gazebos alike feature solid, full coverage roofs to completely block out the rain, snow, and sun.

While pavilions are typically rectangular with flat or pointed roofs… Gazebos may be either octagonal or square, with a peaked roof. (There’s not much difference between the two!)

Oftentimes, you’ll find pavilions and gazebos constructed with wood, metal, or vinyl frames… With shingled or metal roofs.

These will be available in a variety of colors and styles… To match outdoor kitchen spaces from modern to rustic.

As with pergolas… You should have plenty of clearance between your built-in appliances and pavilion or gazebo, particularly if you opt for a wooden covering atop your kitchen.

Installing an outdoor kitchen vent hood is also required in most situations when grilling under a solid roof covering, (especially in spaces with limited airflow) so keep this in mind!

Awnings

Awnings are directly attached to your home’s exterior, and will extend over your outdoor living space to provide some shade.

Most frequently, you’ll find awnings made with metal or waterproof fabrics… Both of which will be available in an array of colors to match your desired outdoor kitchen decor ideas.

As with the other roof coverings we’ve discussed… Just be sure there’s plenty of ventilation if you’ll be installing an outdoor kitchen below a full-coverage awning, especially if you’re leaning towards fabric!

Now, let’s move onto another outdoor kitchen decor idea.

4. Adorn Your Island With A Backsplash

outdoor kitchen with backsplash and vent hood
linear island under roof next to pool

To add more color, texture, and striking visual interest to your outdoor kitchen space… Why not incorporate a backsplash behind your prep station?

A backsplash will beautifully offset your BBQ island and stainless steel appliances.

And in addition to serving as outdoor kitchen wall decor… Did you know that backsplashes offer a much more functional purpose?

That’s right! If your kitchen is placed directly against a wall… A tile, stainless steel, stone, brick, or concrete backsplash will protect said wall from grease stains (and potential grease fires).

What better way to curb a safety risk than with a beautiful adornment?

Use Nature As A Backdrop

l shaped outdoor kitchen with outstanding lake views

Not planning to build an outdoor kitchen against a wall?

Well, a backsplash may not be a feasible outdoor kitchen decor idea… But it’s still possible to add a beautiful backdrop to your space.

As you plan your outdoor kitchen and deliberate on your backyard design… Consider if you have a favorite view on your property.

If so, plan to use it as a natural backdrop when you build your outdoor kitchen!

5. Illuminate Your Outdoor Kitchen Space For Evening Entertainment

Ornamenting your island with outdoor kitchen lighting is yet another illuminating decor idea.

To further expand on this point, there are a few different lighting ideas to consider.

Task Lighting

outdoor lighting on wall above l shape outdoor kitchen

First, task lighting. This type of lighting is intended to illuminate specific work surfaces or areas of your kitchen, so you can always complete your food prep and cooking tasks with ease.

Not only will task lighting add a warm glow to your kitchen area… It’ll also make it much more functional after dark.

Under-counter lights are a good example of outdoor kitchen task lighting. Many will make use of LED strip lights below the countertop of their kitchen to illuminate their cabinetry, access doors, mini fridge, or other under-counter components.

To illuminate your full workspace, you can also include recessed or string lighting overhead to shed some light on your kitchen… Or opt for wall sconces to lighten up your countertops, built-in grill, and other appliances.

Ambient Lighting

new jersey outdoor kitchen by rta at night with lighting

Ambient lighting sets the mood in an outdoor area, by providing equal (typically soft) illumination throughout a space.

In general, it’ll also enable better nighttime visibility.

Recessed lighting, wall sconces, and string lights are all go-to types of ambient lighting… To make your space warm, welcoming, and safer after sundown.

6. Use Greenery In Your Grilling Station

Factoring in plant life is another incredible outdoor kitchen decor idea… To add natural beauty, color, and visual interest to your space.

With so many plant species and tons of different ways to accessorize your island with greenery… It’s an ultra-versatile idea, too!

Allow us to give you a taste as to how greenery can open up a realm of creative backyard design ideas.

Planters

No matter where you set up your summer kitchen… Pairing it with planters (and plenty of them!) is a wonderful way to celebrate your natural surroundings.

You can easily choose the shape and size of your planters… Which plant life you want on display… Plus, you won’t have to worry about maintaining a manicured garden (Which is a bonus for those of us without a green thumb!)

linear grill island on balcony with planters

Garden Beds

If you want your outdoor kitchen area to be absolutely surrounded by sprawling plant life… Adding garden beds nearby is your best option.

Depending on your climate… You could plan to always have something in bloom, painting your outdoor kitchen area in bright splashes of natural beauty throughout the seasons.

Live Plant Walls

This decor idea may be a bit more avant-garde… But there’s no denying its splendor.

While this homeowner opted to adorn their outdoor kitchen area with a tropical succulent wall… Your options here are truly limitless.

For a decor idea that’s both awe-worthy and practical… We’d suggest taking a spin on this design with a living herb wall!

That way, you could always have your favorite fresh seasonings conveniently on hand… While simultaneously adding a splash of natural color to your patio kitchen.

7. Decorate Your Outdoor Kitchen Area With Landscaping Additions

To truly make the most of your natural surroundings… Why not decorate your outdoor kitchen area with tasteful landscape or hardscape design?

Here are a few inspiring landscaping additions to complement your outdoor kitchen design.

Water Features

If you’re all about tranquil and calming outdoor kitchen decor… Consider furnishing your BBQ island area with a water feature.

On top of adding some upscale charm to your patio… Fountains, waterfalls, or even beautiful stony streams alongside your summer kitchen will enhance the soundscape and serenity in your backyard.

Fire Features

Fire pits or outdoor fireplaces are other decorative and functional landscape features we’d encourage adding to your outside living room.

There’s nothing more comforting than sitting around crackling flames as you cook, dine, or recline in your grill station.

Plus, the warm glow of fire will introduce an inviting ambiance in your outdoor entertaining space… Encouraging you to stay outdoors even after dusk.

8. Add A Personal Touch

Finally… It may seem obvious, but it’s important to remember your own personal tastes as you decorate your outdoor kitchen.

Just as you decorate a house to make it feel like home… An outdoor kitchen should be decorated to make it feel like your own.

So, how can you accomplish this?

As evidenced in the examples above… Decorating your kitchen island with personalized wooden signs and wall hangings is an easy way to make your cooking space feel more snug, welcoming, and tailored to you.

After something more hands-on? If you’re more experienced… You could even give pouring your own countertops a shot. We recently had a customer go all out with their DIY outdoor kitchen counter space, as you can see above.

But of course, before you can get started on personalized outdoor kitchen decor…

The first thing you’ll need is a personalized outdoor kitchen.

Benefits Of An Outdoor Kitchen With A TV

On the fence about an outdoor kitchen with a TV?

Here are a few reasons why this pairing is a match made in heaven.

Your Patio Will Be Transformed Into A Full Outdoor Entertainment Center

An outdoor kitchen with a TV will transform your backyard into a hosting hotspot… And here’s how.

A grill island will allow you to keep your guests’ hunger sated and their thirst quenched… With no need to run inside to keep the party going. (And effectively eliminating any FOMO!)

That’s because today, BBQ islands can be customized to rival the functionality of your indoor kitchen.

Of course, built-in grills will bring on the cooking power… But you can also include smokers, griddles, pizza ovens, side burners, and so much more.

You can also accessorize with outdoor refrigerators, sinks, and storage… To create a full outdoor prep station.

And let’s not forget about outdoor bar islands. These provide the perfect spot to sit, relax, and dine al fresco.

And when you pair all of that with an outdoor TV… There’ll never be a dull moment!

You can watch your favorite show, movie, or catch a game… All while cooking, enjoying food hot off the grill, and sipping on cool beverages from an outdoor mini fridge or kegerator.

Sure, you could always just eat in front of your indoor TV… But who wants to watch through a window as beautiful summer days pass you by?

The warm sun and fresh air will heighten everyone’s mood… And your guests won’t be able to resist coming back for more.

And we’re not just saying that! This next point will show you what we mean.

An Outdoor Kitchen With A TV Can Lower Stress

l shaped outdoor kitchen with bar and refreshment center with tv to entertain

Did you know that the average American spends about three hours every day watching TV?

That’s a good chunk of time… So it’s no surprise that over 70% of individuals also report eating meals in front of a screen.

We hate to bore you with more stats… But bear with us for a moment.

Research shows that spending just a couple hours outside every week can significantly lower stress.

See where we’re going?

We’re not saying you shouldn’t eat in front of the TV (we all do it!)… We’re merely implying that an outdoor kitchen with a TV will allow you to reap the benefits brought on by the fresh air while doing so.

Really, it’s a win-win.

Considerations For Your Outdoor Kitchen And TV Area

Now that we’ve covered a couple advantages… You may be all for an outdoor kitchen and TV area of your own.

But before you dive in headfirst… You’ll want to keep these considerations in mind.

Let’s discuss.

Opt For An Outdoor Rated TV

bar seating and dining table with seating on deck and umbrella with outdoor tv mounted on wall

First things first, you can’t pair just any old TV with your outdoor kitchen.

Extreme temperatures, precipitation, wind, dirt, debris, and exposure to UV-rays can all negatively affect your display… If it’s not specially designed for outdoor use.

Luckily, most outdoor-rated TVs are built to combat these risk factors… And will be much more heavy duty than your standard indoor screen.

So, it’s important to be on the lookout for outdoor TVs, specifically.

Thankfully, these models will be clearly labeled as such… Though keep in mind that they will cost quite a bit more than the average indoor TV (most models average $2,000 and above).

If you want even more protection for your investment… You could also pair your new TV with a weatherproof enclosure or cabinet, to keep it fully encapsulated and out of harm’s way.

And if you want even more peace of mind…

Consider Keeping Your TV & Kitchen Area Under Cover

outdoor kitchen under roof with outdoor lighting

An outdoor kitchen with a TV is great, for the most part… But there are some uncontrollable factors that can mess with snack-and-movie time.

The bright sun overhead can cast a blinding glare on the screen for the better portion of an afternoon…

Not to mention, working or sitting at a summer kitchen in the blazing hot sun can be downright unbearable.

Then, there’s the rain to deal with… Which can quickly cut your backyard parties short.

These annoyances are obviously less than ideal… So how can you keep them at bay?

We’d suggest covering your TV and outdoor kitchen design with a roof!

Not only will this give your outdoor kitchen with TV extra protection from the elements… It’ll also make your space usable rain or shine.

Pergolas, awnings, and canopies offer great shade coverings… While full-covering pavilions and gazebos will keep your entire area comfy and dry.

Depending on the size of your layout… You may even benefit from including multiple roof structures in your design. (We’ll share some visual examples shortly!)

What’s The Best Outdoor Kitchen And TV Layout?

watching the football game on outdoor tv

We’ll cut straight to the chase. There’s no one-size-fits-all blueprint to achieve the perfect outdoor kitchen and TV layout.

Everyone’s backyard space is unique, and everyone has a different vision for their ideal outdoor entertainment center.

So as you plan your TV and kitchen layout… Consider why you want an outdoor TV in your design.

Perhaps you enjoy following tutorials from your favorite TV chef as you cook… In which case you’ll want the screen to be visible from your grill island.

For this scenario, we’d suggest wall-mount TVs. Unlike bulky TV cabinets… These will make for easy viewing, without overcrowding your cooking area.

Alternatively, you might want the TV to be visible as you sit and dine on fresh-grilled food… Or even as you lounge in a comfy outdoor seating area post-dinner.

In these instances, consider the size of your outdoor space, as well as its general layout.

Think of where your dining or seating area will be… And save some nearby room on your patio for a TV cabinet.

Or if there’s an exterior or retaining wall across the way… Preserve some real estate on your patio by opting for a wall-mount display.

Want the best of both worlds? Consider swiveling wall-mount TVs that can be viewed both when cooking and dining.

In any case, your main goal is keep your TV visible without inhibiting your cooking or entertainment area.

Though spaced apart, both the cooking and lounging areas are tucked under full roof coverage… Creating a comfortable outdoor space to escape to, rain or shine.

outdoor bar fridge island idea with trash and three drawers

Before we truly begin in earnest… There’s an FAQ we have to quickly clear up.

You may see the terms “outdoor bar accessories” and “outdoor bar appliances” used interchangeably. (You’ll see this in the context of an outdoor kitchen.)

So, what’s going on here?

Well, outdoor bar appliances can also be considered accessories.

After all, any appliances you install are the accessories for your bar island.

But to make it slightly more complex… Outdoor bar accessories aren’t limited to just appliances. Barware, wine glasses, and so much more falls under this umbrella.

Point is, while you might see “accessories” and “appliances” used interchangeably… When you hear “appliances”, you know what you’re getting. When you hear “accessories”, that can mean both appliances and other bar-related items.

Got it?

It’s also worth mentioning that beer doesn’t have a monopoly on kegerator use!

Any carbonated beverage will perform well in these units… Hard cider, kombucha, and seltzer are all excellent options.

Some homeowners even use their kegerator to dispense ultra-caffeinated cold brew!

So if you’re just not a beer fan… Don’t let that steer you away from the experience a kegerator can provide you.

Our Pick: Summerset Outdoor Kegerator

Product Highlights

Size: 25”

Summerset’s outdoor kegerator is an excellent option in the premium price range.

All of your best harvests will be readily available, right outdoors.

Additionally, a wine cooler in your outdoor bar will create the perfect excuse for tasting parties.

Simply lay out a spread of charcuterie… And pour perfectly-chilled wine into your best glasses.

Is there much more you could ask for? (We think not.)

Ice Maker for Constant Access to Refreshment

If traditional refrigeration simply isn’t enough for you… An ice maker may be in order.

This is important if you plan on making cocktails, and serving lots of scotch… On the rocks.

The more guests you serve, the more ice you’ll need.

So having a dedicated outdoor ice maker completely removes careful calculation from the equation.

When you need ice… It will be there. (And in large quantities!)

Ice Bin as a Standard Refrigeration Alternative

person pouring wine by drop in cooler

There’s one caveat to a traditional refrigerator we haven’t discussed… And depending on your plans, it can be a big one.

Unsurprisingly, outdoor fridges need access to electricity to function.

If you’d rather avoid spending the time and money on getting your outdoor bar hooked up to the grid… You don’t have to drop the concept of refrigeration entirely.

Adding a drop in cooler to your bar is an excellent alternative!

Rather than lugging out the ol’ cooler or ice bucket… You can incorporate this accessory directly into your bar.

Functional Outdoor Home Bar Accessories: Sinks & More

These accessories will give you far more functionality than a bar cart… And look fantastic in your space.

Outdoor Sink for Convenient Handwashing

outdoor kitchen sink

If you try your hand at bartending outdoors… You’ll quickly realize how essential it is to have a sink on hand.

How are you going to rinse out your shaker tins?

What about rinsing glasses for reuse?

Or maybe you just get some simple sugar on your hands… And you’re desperate to wash the stickiness off.

All of these annoyances are completely solved with an outdoor sink.

If you want maximum efficiency and want to avoid running into your house… An outdoor sink is a no-brainer for peace of mind.

Our Pick: Coyote 21” Sink

Product Highlights

Size: 21 Inches

In fact, many outdoor sinks just include the basin… With no faucet or anything!

This sink from Coyote couldn’t be more different.

This 21” sink includes a sizable basin, faucet, cover, soap dispenser… And is even able to be hooked up for cold and hot water.

So washing hands or rinsing glasses will be absolutely effortless.

A full-on refreshment center might be more your speed.

And while the features will vary across brands… These appliances will often include a sink, bottle opener, towel holder, and bottle rack all in one unit.

This allows you to have all the bartending essentials you need… Right at your fingertips.

Rinse off glasses at the sink, grab your mixers at the bottle rack, and pop open bottles with the bottle opener.

So you can slice up lemons, toss them in the tray… And also keep bottles and cans available, right in the cooler.

The only ding on this accessory is that the sink is rather small… But for everything else you get, it may as well be a starter kit for aspiring home bartenders.

And constructed with 304 stainless steel… This refreshment center will give you years of excellent service.

Doors & Drawers for Accessory Storage

dry pantry being used in outdoor kitchen

While we’ve primarily discussed appliances that will be built into your island thus far… There are also many freestanding accessories you’ll want to buy for your bar.

And where will you put said accessories?

You could store them inside the house, and haul them out when needed… But it is so much easier to keep them right inside your bar.

So while they’re not the most exciting add-ons in the world, don’t neglect storage.

When you begin to wonder where you’ll store all that drinkware… You’ll be glad that you sprang for storage.

Our Pick: Coyote 31” Dry Pantry

Product Highlights

Size: 31”

Materials: 304 Stainless Steel

This fully-sealed 304 stainless steel storage unit will keep your accessories perfectly dry, no matter the weather.

And while it’s primarily designed for storing dry goods and condiments… This pantry provides great versatility for your standard bar accessories.

The left side is equipped with two roll-out drawers for easy access to your bartending gadgets.

To the right side, you’ll have access to shelving that’s perfect for storing glassware, napkins, and other accessories.

Roll-Out Trash Bins for Easy Cleanup

woman opening pull out trash in outdoor kitchen

Arguably, the worst part about hosting a party is the cleanup.

Despite your best effort… Trash gets littered everywhere, and it’s a pain in the neck to deal with.

But if you build a trash bin right into your outdoor bar… You can greatly cut down on the waste in your outdoor space.

Plus, you won’t have to mess with an unwieldy, and unsightly trash bin in your backyard.

It’s a win for all involved.

Our Pick: Coyote Dual Pull Out Trash & Recycle

Product Highlights

Materials: 304 Stainless Steel

Features: Two bins (trash and recycle)

Once again, Coyote swoops in to save the day with their 304 stainless steel trash and recycle unit.

This unit has two separate trash bins which make it painless to separate regular trash from your recyclables.

And with smooth roll out drawers on each side… It’s easy, dare we say, satisfying, to toss cans and paper towels out of sight.

Bartending Accessories for an Outdoor Bar: Your Backyard as the Neighborhood Hangout

Speaking of bartending… You can’t get the job done if you don’t have the tools of the trade!

Let’s review the accessories you need for your patio bar.

Classy Glassware for Serving

With all this talk about drinks… It’s obvious you’ll need some glassware to serve them in.

And while you could just bring in the glasses you already own from inside… There are some compelling reasons to spring for a dedicated, outdoors-only set.

For one, it’s more convenient. You don’t want to constantly have to shuttle in and out of the house for more glasses.

And more annoyingly… You’ll have to carry all those dirty glasses back inside for washing.

But if you have an outdoor sink… You can wash your second set right outdoors, without ever stepping foot inside.

And if your indoor set of glassware is particularly fragile… It’s not worth the extra risk of bringing them outside.

As long as you’ve got the storage space… Keeping a set (or multiple sets) of glassware outdoors is a smart choice.

Our Pick: Bormioli Rocco Romantic Tumbler Glasses

Product Highlights

Materials: Soda Lime Glass

Durability: Italian-made, dishwasher safe

These stunningly designed tumbler glasses aren’t just pretty… They’re extremely durable!

This set is made from tempered soda lime glass, which is among the most resistant to breakage and chipping.

Bormioli Rocco’s Italian-made glassware is a popular choice in restaurants and bars for this exact reason… It can be handled quite roughly!

So you can rest assured, these tumblers are not likely to crack under pressure.

And even if you’re not partial to the artisanal, Victorian appearance… Bormiolo Rocco has a wide variety of styles available.

Bartending Set for Unbelievably Good Cocktails

While it’s possible to serve up cocktails without the help of a cocktail shaker… It’s certainly a lot more difficult without one!

And the same could be said of all the other accessories that come with a good bartending set: tongs, strainers, liquor pourers, muddlers, wine openers, jiggers… All of these items are vital for a good bartending experience.

So why bother going without?

All these items will get tons of use… And make you a better bartender, while you’re at it.

They’re both crowd-pleasing beverages… And once you make the initial batch, your guests can refill themselves!

Talk about easy.

Of course, you don’t have to limit yourself to the aforementioned cocktails… You could even go non-alcoholic, filling them to the brim with fresh lemonade or sweet tea.

Bar Stools for Function and Comfort

bar island with stool and patio next to house in reclaimed brick white

If you plan on encouraging your guests to stick around for a while… You’ll need to provide them with seating!

While some of us may be content to stand around for most of the day… Eventually, your legs will get tired. It’s inevitable.

So throw yourself and your loved ones a bone by adding some bar stools to your setup.

Aside from providing much more comfort… This patio furniture will also make your bar station look more complete.

Because, honestly… What’s an outdoor bar without stools tucked underneath?

Our Pick: Polywood Contempo Saddle Bar Stools

polywood traditional 30 inch saddle bar stool

Bar stools can get expensive, especially when you’re buying 4-6 or even more of them. So if they start crumbling on you in a year or two… That hurts.

Hence, why we’re avid cheerleaders of Polywood’s modern bar stools. Made from recycled plastic, these weather-hardy stools are backed by a 20 year warranty.

And with integral colors embedded into the plastic itself… You’ll never have to worry about the hue chipping off or fading away.

Well, since you’re looking into a Louisiana Pellet grill… We can tell you’re already on the right track.

As you’ve surely heard, wood pellet grills are incredibly versatile.

They can smoke, grill, bake… And if you play your cards right, they can even sear quite beautifully. (You just need to choose the right model!)

Inevitably, your research has led you to investigate Louisiana Grills in particular.

What are your options? Is there anything special about these pellet grills?

These are excellent questions… And we’ll be sure to answer both in detail.

Starting now.

Louisiana Grills Company Background

Louisiana Grills Logo

To get you more acquainted with the Louisiana Grills brand… It’s important to know where they got started!

Now, the brand is actually a subsidiary of Dansons Corporate. They also manage Pit Boss, Country Smokers, and several other brands unrelated to grilling.

It’s claimed that both Dansons and Louisiana Grills were founded in 1999, by Dan Thiessen and two of his sons.

Their vision was to utilize sawmill waste… And transform it into a viable source of energy. Thus, Danson expanded into animal bedding and pellet fuel, in addition to pellet grills.

And since the Theissens live in southern Manitoba, Canada… They were driven to create a pellet grill solution that can be used year-round in harsh climates.

Hence, where Louisiana Grills come in.

Over the years, Louisiana Grills has released 7 unique pellet grill categories for you to choose from.

So let’s dive in!

Louisiana Grills: Complete Product Overview

Since Louisiana Grills has piqued your interest… It’s key to understand all the options on offer.

We’ll start with the Founders Premier Series.

Louisiana Grills Founders Premier Series

Louisiana Grills Founders Premier 800 Pellet
Product Highlights

Price: $1,199.00 or $1,495.00

Temperature Range: 180 – 600 degrees Fahrenheit

Materials: 304 stainless steel

What We Like
 • Impressive 1,000 degree open flame searing
 • Large hopper for low-maintenance refills
 • WiFi and bluetooth capabilities
What’s Not Ideal
 • Would like to see more robust materials

The Founders Premier Series is touted as a culmination of “over 20 years of an unyielding passion for excellence, an unrivaled dedication to the pellet grill industry, and an endless devotion to the craft of high-end outdoor cooking”.

Sounds impressive, right?

Well… Some of these specs are quite impressive!

The Founders Premier Series utilizes their innovative SearTech(Tm) technology. This allows for both direct and indirect cooking on your Louisiana Grills pellet smoker.

So for indirect cooking… Your temperature range will sit at 180°F to 600°.

But if you want to crank up the heat with open flame searing… You can max out at a temperature of up to 1,000°F! This is insanely hot for a pellet grill. (For comparison, most Traegers cap out at 500°F).

This grill is also available in 2 sizes, the 800 and the 1200. The 800 will give you 864 square inches of cooking area, and the 1200 will give you 1,205.

Both sizes will come equipped with a 29 lb pellet hopper… So you won’t have to refill too often!

These grills are also WiFi and bluetooth enabled for temperature control at a distance through the Smoke It app.

Plus, you’ll get two meat probes to keep track of temperatures as you’re cooking.

Louisiana Grills claims to use a “heavy-duty steel construction” on these grills… But the grade of steel used is left ambiguous.

This is a bit concerning… As we like to see 304 grade stainless steel on all outdoor appliances. This material provides superior resistance to rust and corrosion, especially in harsh environments.

This steel is layered with a high temperature powder coated finish… But if this chips (and the steel is poor quality), you’ll be opening yourself up to rust and corrosion.

Point is… You’ll want to check in with Louisiana Grills on the exact grade of steel used here.

As for price, you’ll find both the 800 and 1200 listed on Amazon for $1,199.00 and $1,495.00, respectively.

Louisiana Grills Founders Legacy Series

LOUISIANA GRILLS FOUNDERS LEGACY 800 PELLET GRILL
Product Highlights

Price: $1,899.00 or $2,199.00

Temperature Range: 180 – 600 degrees Fahrenheit

Materials: 304 stainless steel

What We Like
 • Same benefits as the Premier Series
 • Material quality upgrade with 304 stainless steel construction
 • Griddle plate for more versatility when cooking
What’s Not Ideal
 • A bit of ambiguity on whether construction is 100% 304 stainless steel or not

Here we have a twist on the Founders Series… It’s the Legacy Series.

And if you’re just focused on the specs… There’s not a whole lot of difference here!

You get the same 180°F to 600°F temperature range, 1,000°F open flame searing, 29 lb pellet hopper, WiFi and bluetooth, two meat probes, and size options. (There’s a 800 and 1200 version.)

So… What’s the difference?

There are a couple distinct quality of life upgrades on these Louisiana smoker pellet grills.

For one, the digital control panel is upgraded with LG’s Smart Control Touch Pad. This system is a bit more streamlined and easier to use.

Further, the Legacy Series will come with a griddle insert… Allowing you to turn your pellet grill into a flat top griddle.

For us, the best upgrade is in the construction. Louisiana Grills advertises 304 stainless steel construction here… Which is significant for resilience in the outdoor environment.

However, still proceed with caution! We didn’t see mention of “complete” 304 stainless steel construction anywhere… So you’ll want to confirm with Louisiana Grills that this smoker is fully 304.

You’ll find the Legacy 800 listed for $1,899.00 and the Legacy 1200 for $2,199.00.

Louisiana Grills Black Label Series: Freestanding Pellet Grill

Louisiana Grills Black Label 1000
Louisiana Grill Founders series premier 1200
Product Highlights

Price: $999.00, $1,099.00, or $1,199.00

Temperature Range: 180 – 600 degrees Fahrenheit

Materials: 304 stainless steel

What We Like
 • A decent beginner-friendly option that won’t break the bank
 • Higher temperature range than most pellet grills for the price (Hits 600°F instead of just 500°F)
What’s Not Ideal
 • Build quality is questionable for long term use
 • Smaller pellet hopper may not be ideal for longer smokes

Now, let’s take a look at a slightly different Louisiana grill pellet smoker.

The Black Label Series actually has several unique grill options (including a vertical smoker)… So we’ll break this down into two separate sections, starting with the freestanding pellet grills.

The Black Label Series includes three size options: the 800, 1000, and 1200. As you would expect… These grills have 809, 1,028, and 1,180 square inches of cooking space, respectively.

These pellet grills offer the same temperature range you’re already familiar with, being 180°F to 600°F.

And while there’s options for cooking with direct and indirect heat… There’s no capability for open flame, super-high heat searing.

The Black Label grills come with an 18 lb hopper, which is a bit of a downgrade from the Founders Series… But still a decent size for a freestanding pellet grill.

You’ll still get a digital control panel with WiFi and bluetooth capability… As well as 2 programmable meat probes.

Once again, material quality is left a bit ambiguous. Louisiana Grills states that they use 14 gauge steel construction with a high temperature black sand powder coat finish… With no mention of the grade of steel itself.

All in all… The Black Label Series freestanding options appear to be a beginner friendly and no-frills solution.

These BBQ grills are quite affordable as well… So you won’t suffer a great loss if something goes wrong.

The 800 Series will go for $999.00, the 1000 for $1,099.00, and the 1200 for $1,199.00.

Louisiana Grills Black Label Series: Portable Grill

Louisiana Black Label Portable Grill
Product Highlights

Price: $499.00

Temperature Range: 180 – 500 degrees Fahrenheit

Materials: “Heavy duty” stainless steel and powder coated finish

What We Like
 • It’s a truly portable pellet grill for grilling when traveling
 • Includes a smoke rack if you want to smoke on-the-go
What’s Not Ideal
 • Material quality leaves more to be desired

Also in the Black Label Series… You’ll have access to a portable grill.

So if you’d like to bring pellet-grilled goodness with you on a tailgating or camping trip… This little unit could be right up your alley. (As long as you have access to electricity!)

And despite its petite size, the Black Label 300 portable grill’s features are quite good.

This pint-sized grill will provide you with a 300 square inch cooking surface… As well as a temperature range of 180°F to 500°F.

You lose a little bit of heat on the high end… But it’s not much cause for complaint, all things considered!

This Louisiana pellet grill smoker will come with a single programmable meat probe, and built-in smoke rack. It also comes equipped for WiFi and bluetooth connectivity.

The hopper size is 10 lbs, which is a decent amount for such a small footprint.

The construction on this portable grill is the same as the other Black Label Series grills… You’ll get a “heavy-duty” stainless steel construction, and black sand powder coated finish.

So as we’ve mentioned previously… You’ll want to check in with Louisiana Grills on the grade of steel here.

The Black Label Series 300 portable grill is available for $499.00 right on Louisiana Grills’ website.

Louisiana Grills SL Series

Louisiana SL Series 1000
Product Highlights

Price: $974.00 or $1,174.00

Temperature Range: 180 – 600 degrees Fahrenheit

Materials: Unknown

What We Like
 • Similar features to the Founders Premier Series, at a slightly more affordable price
 • Capacity for 1,000°F searing
What’s Not Ideal
 • Material quality appears to be lacking
 • No WiFi or bluetooth connectivity

Moving right along… Let’s get to the SL Series from Louisiana Grills.

What’s interesting about this series is that it’s designed exclusively for Costco. (Although, it is available for purchase on Louisiana Grills’ website.)

So unless you order online directly from the brand… You’ll have to make a trip to your local Costco.

And overall, the features are nearly identical to the Founders Premier Series. The sizes are just a bit smaller, lending to a more affordable price.

The SL Series offers a 700 and 1000 size option… Leading to a 698 square inch and 1,014 square inch cooking area, respectively.

You’ll get the same SearTech(tm) technology as the Founders and Legacy Series… Allowing for both direct and indirect cooking.

The temperature range is also sitting at 180°F – 600°F, with open flame searing capacity up to 1,000°F.

You’ll also get the standard digital control panel, two meat probes, and an 18 lb hopper capacity… Which is a good deal smaller than the Founders Series.

One key difference here is that there’s no WiFi or bluetooth connectivity with these Louisiana wood pellet grills. If you prefer your grills to be analog… This won’t be an issue.

But if you want the convenience of remote control… This will be a pretty significant ding on the SL Series.

As far as construction goes… The main materials are actually not described. However, it’s likely safe to assume that this grill features the same ambiguous steel construction. (Of course, check with Louisiana Grills on this.)

What’s the price on this pellet grill & smoker?

You’ll pay $974.99 for the 700 Series, and $1,174.99 for the 1000 Series.

Louisiana Grills Estate Series

Louisiana Grills Estate Series Built-In
Product Highlights

Price: $2,499.00 or $2,499.99

Temperature Range: 180 – 600 degrees Fahrenheit

Materials: 304 Stainless Steel

What We Like
 • Complete 304 stainless steel construction
 • Built-in option for outdoor kitchens
 • Cart model offers storage capacity
What’s Not Ideal
 • Built-in model is constructed without flanges
 • Lack of WiFi and bluetooth connectivity

Getting dizzy from all the Louisiana Grills pellet grill options yet? Don’t worry, we’re nearly through.

Next in line, we have the Estate Series.

In this line, you’ll have access to a built-in pellet grill, and a freestanding cart option.

And just from the looks of it… Surely, you can tell there are some differences here.

For one, the pellet hopper is right next to the grill, but fully integrated into the design. This creates a sleek aesthetic… Perfect for a luxury outdoor kitchen.

A single size is on offer here, being the 860. As you could guess, it’s an 860 square inch grilling area.

The temperature range is right in line with previous options… Settling in at 180°F to 600°F.

Hopper capacity here will be an ample 28 lbs… And a single meat probe will be included.

Like the SL Series, there is no WiFi or bluetooth functionality. So keep this in mind before you make a final decision.

That said, the construction on the Estate Series is excellent. Finally, we have a grill with complete 304 stainless steel construction! It’s great to see… And we have no quibbles on the high quality construction here.

However, there is something else to keep in mind if you opt for the built-in model. There are no flanges on this grill… Which is a challenge when installing it into your outdoor kitchen.

The flanges are designed to support the weight of your built-in grill. Without these… You’ll have to build your island specifically to support the grill from below.

This is not ideal… And can pose some safety challenges if not handled correctly.

But if you go for the freestanding cart, you’ll have no such concern. It’s self supported, has built-in storage, and side shelves for convenience.

As for price… The Estate Series freestanding cart is available for $2,499.00, and the built-in model for $2,499.99.

Last, but certainly not least… We have the Elite Series from Louisiana Grills.

And this one will be quite easy to cover! There’s only one grill on offer.

Also known as the 800 Deluxe, this grill has 838 square inches of cooking area.

As you might expect… Most of the features are quite similar to Louisiana Grills’ other models.

Once again, you get a 180°F to 600°F temperature range, a programmable meat probe, and the capacity for direct or indirect cooking. (This is accomplished with a sliding broiler plate.)

The 21 lb pellet hopper has a similar design to the Estate Series… Offering a sleek look on the exterior.

There’s no mention of WiFi or bluetooth connectivity here… So you’ll just have to do without.

Looking at the cart itself, you’ll get a bottle opener, side shelves, door storage, and grease bucket… All on top of caster wheels.

And as with most of the other grills we’ve mentioned… The construction on the Elite Series isn’t much to write home about.

We get the same unspecified heavy-duty stainless steel construction… And high temperature powder coated finish.

That said, this Louisiana pellet smoker grill is a decent option if you’re uninterested in bells and whistles.

Currently, the Elite Series 800 Deluxe is available for $1,199.00.

Are Louisiana Pellet Grills any Good?

After everything you’ve seen so far, you may be left wondering…

Are Louisiana Grills worth it? Are they any good?

It’s a fair question to pose.

And in all reality… The answer depends on what you’re looking for.

Some grills have high quality construction and impressive performance… While others may be better suited to a short term solution.

So in order to parse out whether a Louisiana pellet grill is right for you… Let’s take a closer look at several categories.

Tech Features are a Mixed Bag

temperature feature on louisiana grill

These days, if you’re purchasing a pellet grill… Most people assume that there will at least be some form of WiFi connectivity to an app.

This functionality greatly increases the convenience of a pellet grill… Offering one of the most hands-off grilling and smoking experiences there is.

As you’ve seen, Louisiana pellet grills are a mixed bag in this category. Some models offer WiFi and bluetooth… Others not.

And as consumers continue to move away from a solely analog pellet grill… This is a bit of a miss on Louisiana Grills’ part. So if this is important to you, stick with the Founders Series and the Black Label Series.

Aside from this, the Founders Series and the SL Series offer that impressive 1,000°F open flame technology… Which is quite unique in the world of pellet grilling.

That capability alone does a lot of heavy lifting if you want to pull off high temperature cooks in a pellet grill.

So overall, Louisiana Grills is a bit uneven in the technology department. The Founders Series includes some of the better tech… While other options lag behind.

Materials are Hit or Miss

Louisiana Grills materials close up

In a similar spirit… The material quality in Louisiana pellet grills is hit or miss.

The vast majority of Louisiana Grills’ line is constructed with an unspecified grade of heavy duty stainless steel… And then coated with a high temperature powder coated finish.

This can be okay as long as the exterior doesn’t chip… But that’s inevitably going to happen at some point.

And at that stage, your grill will begin to rust and corrode.

Same goes for the fact that nearly all of Louisiana Grills’ line utilizes porcelain coated cast iron grill grates. (Estate Series is the exception, using 304 stainless steel instead.)

Again, once those grates chip… You’ll have to order a replacement shortly after.

So if you’re only interested in a short-term solution that requires maintenance… This likely won’t be much of an obstacle for you.

And considering most models are relatively affordable… It’s not a crushing punch to the gut if the structure conks out after a couple years.

That said, there are a couple models from Louisiana Grills that are well-constructed.

The Estate Series offers complete 304 stainless steel construction… And the Founders Legacy Series offers the same, which is great to see. (But you will want to confirm complete 304 on the Founders Legacy.)

At the same time… You’ll want to double-check the warranty before you’ve settled on a Louisiana pellet grill.

Warranty Can be Good... Depending on Your Goals

While often overlooked… Choosing a pellet grill with a robust warranty is one of the best favors you can do for yourself.

When you’re spending $1,000 or more on a pellet grill… You want to know you’ll be covered if something goes wrong.

In the case of Louisiana Grills, they offer a 5 year warranty against defects and workmanship… And 5 year coverage for electrical components.

For pellet grills on the lower end of the price range (under $1,500), this is actually pretty decent. Many grills in this range offer a 1-3 year warranty… So you’re getting a bit more value here.

But for the Louisiana Grills that approach the premium price range ($1,500 or more)… The 5 year warranty is pretty underwhelming.

At that price point, your pellet grill is becoming a more significant investment… And many brands offer higher quality construction, and a lifetime warranty in the same price range.

So if you’re springing for the Estate or Founders Legacy Series… The warranty leaves more to be desired.

And speaking of wanting more… If Louisiana Grills’ spread doesn’t quite do it for you… Perhaps you’ll be open to an alternative.

An Excellent Pellet Grill for Your Outdoor Space

If you’re after a solid pellet grill that’s solidly constructed, performs smoothly, and offers an incredible warranty… You might be interested in the Coyote pellet grill.

Offered in both a freestanding and built-in setting… The Coyote pellet grill is a formidable choice for your backyard.

This grill offers complete, inside-and-out 304 stainless steel construction, and a 175°F – 700°F temperature range… Outperforming Louisiana Grills in the construction category.

The dual fan convection system ensures perfectly accurate temperature control… And impressive results when grilling, smoking, or baking. (Just be aware that this grill does not offer WiFi functionality.)

Plus, you get access to a lifetime warranty. So on the off chance that something does go wrong… You can rest assured that you’re taken care of.

And if you really want to take your setup to the next level… Consider incorporating a Coyote pellet grill into an outdoor kitchen.

The side and front shelves on a freestanding pellet grill are nice and all… But they simply can’t replace the convenience of having a complete outdoor prep station.

Full sized countertops eliminate the need to run in and out of the house… And you run way less of a risk of knocking things over!

But that’s only the tip of the iceberg on what an outdoor kitchen can offer you.

QUICK LINKS:

How To Set Yourself Up For a Stunning Outdoor TV Space

Before we delve into the design ideas… Let’s first get the show started with some helpful tips and tricks for planning your perfect outdoor TV setup.

How Will Your TV Fit Into Your Space?

Before your outdoor TV area can start to take shape… You’ll need to know exactly how a TV will mesh with your outdoor patio design.

Think of your current backyard layout. Do you have a large retaining wall or feature wall that’s calling for attention?

If so, a wall mounted outdoor TV may be the perfect addition to that blank space!

This is a great way to get a TV outside, without cutting into precious patio real estate.

But… What if you don’t have ample wall area to work with?

Well, don’t worry! Wall-mounted TVs aren’t your only option.

Outdoor TV stands or cabinets are another great way to factor in a display al fresco… Without the need for a wall mount.

And if you’re striving for more of a discreet look… A TV lift cabinet may be a top contender!

These hide your TV from view when not in use… And can even double as outdoor storage.

If you do opt for a TV stand or cabinet… Just don’t forget to save sufficient patio space.

The last thing you’d want to do is crowd your outdoor entertainment center with a bulky TV cabinet.

Still struggling to visualize your outdoor living space with TV?

When in doubt, consider your current interior design setup. How does your indoor TV complement your living room?

Your preferences for your indoor space should translate to your back patio… So if you like your inside entertainment center, why not replicate it outdoors?

Your Screen Size Should Be Just Right

Next, don’t forget that size matters for your outdoor TV.

While it’s fun to toy with the idea of a huge projector screen… The truth is that bigger isn’t always better.

If you’re working with a small backyard… It’s safe to say that you don’t want to overwhelm your entertaining space with a larger-than-life TV.

And conversely, no one wants to squint to see a tiny TV across an expansive back patio.

Point is, your TV should be large enough to see the screen… But not so large that it obstructs your area.

And while we’re on the topic of seeing the screen…

Your Outdoor TV Should Be Easy To See (That’s The Whole Point!)

When it comes to seeing your TV screen… Size is only one factor to keep in mind.

The positioning and angle of your TV also significantly contribute to a comfortable viewing experience!

You and your guests should be able to sit back and relax to catch a show, without having to crane your necks… Which means you’ll want to confirm that your TV is at an optimal angle for viewing.

If you’re struggling to position your TV just right… A swivel outdoor TV mount will make achieving the perfect angle easier.

But when it comes to angles… There’s another element to contend with.

The sun.

While certain outdoor TVs are designed for full-sun-viewing… Others may cast a nasty glare as the sun traverses the horizon.

So, keep this in mind as you brainstorm outdoor patio TV ideas.

So your screen time isn’t cut short by the blazing mid-afternoon sun… Either position your TV out of direct sunlight, or opt for a model with a screen bright enough to rival those rays!

Ensure Your TV Is Shielded — Rain Or Shine

When you have an outdoor TV… The sun isn’t the only thing that may mess with movie time.

You’ll also want to ensure that your TV is shielded from the harsher outdoor elements!

There are a few ways to confirm that your TV has what it takes to hold up outdoors.

First, look for TVs that are rated for outdoor use.

These heavy duty displays will be able to withstand extreme temps… As well as hold up to water, wind, dust, and grime.

And if you want to go a step further with your weatherproof TV… An outdoor TV enclosure is a wise investment.

These will provide yet another layer of protection, for peace of mind that your TV will continue to function properly.

While this may not be the most creative outdoor TV idea… We have to say, it’s one that you certainly don’t want to overlook!

But now, with these considerations top of mind… Are you ready to look at some outdoor TV design ideas?

8 Outstanding Outdoor TV Ideas, For The Ideal Backyard Entertainment Center

An outdoor TV will be the star of your entertainment setup… So how can you give it the spotlight it deserves?

Let’s get straight to the point with these striking outdoor TV ideas for your new display!

In our eyes, the simplest way to take your outdoor TV setup to the next level is by placing it under cover.

While this homeowner went for a full coverage, gazebo-style roof…

You may prefer a pergola or awning for your backyard patio! (Or a different type of outdoor roof altogether.)

Truly, the covered outdoor TV setup ideas are endless.

And with a roof over your back patio… Your outdoor space will start to feel more like an extension of your indoor living room

Not only will a covered patio create a cozy outdoor television nook…

It’ll also provide a sheltered spot from the outdoor elements!

And if you have a full roof keeping your space under cover… A rainy day will no longer keep you cooped up indoors.

Plus, your outdoor furniture will stay safe and sound, regardless of the weather…

Not to mention, those pesky UV rays will be a thing of the past as you bask in the cool shade cast by your outdoor roof.

2. Illuminate Movie Night By Adding Lights to Your Outdoor Living Space

For an outdoor TV seating area under cover… String lighting, recessed lighting, or other outdoor lighting fixtures are an undeniably tasteful touch for enhancing your space.

Not only will illuminating your outdoor living room with TV add some ambience…

It’ll also make it easier to maneuver around your deck or patio in the dark of night.

All around, it’s a safe and stylish idea for your outdoor TV setup!

3. Add The Right Furniture & Accessories to Your Outdoor Living Room, For More Enjoyable TV-Time

But if you truly want to go all out with your patio or deck outdoor TV ideas… Why stop with the basics?

Add heating with a fire pit or outdoor fireplace nearby your TV…

This modern outdoor TV area idea in particular really puts the possibilities on display.

This outdoor TV deck idea is jam-packed with comfy conveniences.

Off to one corner, you can sneak a peek of an outdoor couch…

To the other side, a full dining set gives guests a place to gather…

But that’s not all! You can also enjoy drinks under the umbrella-covered bar seating area.

And the best part? The strategically placed TV will be clearly visible, no matter where you’re seated.

Though this is more of an open-air outdoor TV room idea, there’s still plenty of coverage for comfortable outside entertainment.
